Lurker Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Quite a few really. RD Burman was a complete composer. Specially his work with Gulzar is priceless. Salil Chowdhary was the best orchestra based musician. I beleive Lata Mangeskhar picked his song as her all time favorite, which obviously is a testament in itself. Khayyam as the one who never diluted his work and has been churning hits for past 40 years. Madan Mohan for best ghazal based lilting tracks. Also to quote Lata Mangeskar again, when she was asked which one musician did she missed most had said - I miss Madan Bhaiya. SD Burman, Shankar-Jaikishen, Kalyanji anandji were all classics. I even like Rajesh Roshan's works amongst others. Too many to just pick one really.

Music of Tamil or Kannada, or Malayali cinema we hardly get to hear..unless it is remade.. Roja....original was a classic..we may have missed few classics because of language barrier..

The best music composer of India is ILAYA RAJA who have done a lot of composing for malayalam films too.

Long back with a co-worker from South, I watched a Kamal Hassan movie....can't recall the name of movie, the character name was something like "veerumandi". Though can't understand Tamil, I was thoroughly impressed with as it is narration and down to earth costumes. Recall south Indian actors keep moustache and have noticeable pot belly but are still adored by fans, due to their acting and portrayal of practical society. Give me back our Sanjeev Kumars, Om Puris of Hindi Cinema than these present day Mcaulaylized blue eyed wannabe Firangis and treacherous Khans with banawati accent of "Hinglish".

I dont speak hindi.. but i like some of the hindi movies.. ofcourse with subtitles.. but i shud say most of the bollywood movies are for upper class people.. i mean i cant relate things happenig in the movie with reality.. whereas tamil movies are bit original in the sense the relate to day to day life of normal people.. ofcourse there r exceptions.. but majority of the movie stories revolve around middle class people.. but i dont see tht in the hindi movie where most of the stories are dealing with upper class people.. i dont know why it is like tht.. mebe the lifestyle in the north n south r vastly different.. ofcourse there r also simple movies in hindi..... but i dont see them much these days... they all date back to 80s n 90s.. kamalhasan movies are class.. i wish tht movie virumbandi was released with english subtitles.. i really wanted to show that one to my non-indian friends.. but :( ..... mebe bolllywood is focussin on world market n thtsy prolly they make the movie with such richness.. whereas tamil movies r jus catering to the tamil market around the world....

I have respect for every music composer. And I wouldnt say anyone is nothing or something like that. You may not know much about Rajesh Roshan, I dont mean any disrespect. He is/was an excellent musician and many of his best songs in 70s and 80s are as good as those we have ever had the pleasure of listening.The following song of his is the best on-road song in Indian movie history I daresay.... 5q-0miaIhPw Of the ones you mention Jatin Lalit would be ones I greatly like.
