Guest dada_rocks Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/current/story/360662.html You have said earlier that the most important thing about reverse swing is how you look after the ball. What are the secrets of looking after the ball? I am not giving that away so easily. Not in a freebie interview! Everyone in our team knew what we had to do. And we even had to change Saqlain Mushtaq's action. He used to rub the ball in a manner that used to soften the rough side. As a captain, I had to tell him, "Saqlain don't do that." In team meetings we used to go after him. That much detail? That much detail. Even if while throwing the ball from the outfield, if the rough side comes in touch with the grass, it will become soft. Sometimes bowlers used to stop the ball played back at them with their foot. If the boot spikes hit the rough side, it was Christmas. If it didn't, you shone the ball and moved on. We just took our time. It all depended on the wicket, the weather, the dryness of the outfield. If the wicket is dead and the square grassy, it's not going to happen. If one drop of sweat falls on it, the reverse swing won't happen. And now with this rule to change the ball after 34 overs, you have taken reverse swing out of the one-day equation. So what do you say guys...Ball tamperer or not
Holysmoke Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 read it further Do you think chucking actually gives a bowler an unfair advantage? It does, it definitely does. I have tried, when I was playing, to chuck, but I couldn't. It's difficult to chuck - it's an art. But it does give an unfair advantage.
Guest dada_rocks Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Who was the toughest batsman to bowl to, for you? Sunil Gavaskar. I only got him twice in one-day matches. I played four Tests against him - he never gave me his wicket. I remember bowling him reverse swing, round-the-wicket stuff, bouncers, in the Chennai Test of 1987, but he swayed away easily, seeing the ball into the keeper's gloves. And that was towards the end of his career. Resphekt bhai reshphekt Martin Crowe. Sachin [Tendulkar] - I didn't play against him in Tests for ten years [from 1989 to 1999], so it is very difficult to rate him in that period, when we were at our peak. No doubt he was a great batsman. Brain Lara. Another batsman I hated to bowl to was Mark Waugh. In ODIs, Adam Gilchrist, Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda De Silva.

Got to give him some marks for his honesty viz a viz unabashed foray with the dark side of sportsmanship..
DomainK Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Its not 'kind of ball tampering'. It is 'ball tampering'. Whether you do it by your hands or by your feet, it is tampering. Every single bowling great Pakistan ever produced have either admitted to or been caught cheating.
theguyinallblue Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 rubbing the ball...on trousers can not be tempering....but stopping the ball with spikes with an intention to damage the surface of the ball is surely tempering....and how i am surprised that its pakistani players once again...who indulged in these cheap and unfair practices...

If an Akhtar tommorrow confesses to a murder, dont be surprised if his supporters still support him saying that the murder was not only justified, it was necessary in national and human interest.

Akram couldnt have been clearer, or concise. Chucking is chucking and no matter of breaking it into degree changes that. Sub-continent boards, specially Sri Lankan, have been a trailblazer in making chucking part of cricket for now and future.

If the boot spikes hit the rough side, it was Christmas. If it didn't, you shone the ball and moved on. There is nothing new about this really. I have read about such behaviour from Salim Altaf(apparently the first Pakistani bowler to reverse it), Sarfaraz Nawaz etc. Later on Imran admitted it in court, Waqar was convicted for it and Akram has admitted it more than one occassion. However in this specific iteration Akram is well within his rights. There is no way any Governing body can stop a team from stopping the ball by using their feet(and hence boots). When one picks the seam by nails, fingers, bottle tops then it is a clear case of ball tampering. However if one stops the ball by his boots and in the process the spikes hit the balls so be it. Most fast bowlers will do that in their run up. They dont have enough time to bend. Or for that matter a fielder trying to stop a boundary. Also what about the batsmen? When after every delivery they go to the good length area and "farm" the pitch where the previous ball landed??? Why is that not tampering? xxx
Yuvraj4Captaincy Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Wasim is a legend. He is honest and I say this...even you wasim gives all his secrets to any bowler..that bowler wont be 1/4th as good as wasim..He was a natural/
satishg Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 i guess he meant that inadvertently..like he din mean the fielders were asked to do so..he was just saying if that happens..im not supporting Wasim here and i do know pakistan players have been alleged on this before but im pretty sure he means in that way atleast in this interview..i think we shd get him as our bowling consultant..apart from the fact that he is a pakistani, this guy is a true legend and he knows lot about bowling and since we have so many left armers in our team he can really help them..but then i guess he wont accept that position also in the first place fearing his safety in Pakistan.. and one more thing in the interview he mentions Sachins name as a matter of fact im pretty sure he fancied his chances wen he was at his peak say in the early to mid 90s against Sachin..so bad that test cricket was deprived of this wonderful battle against the 2 greats..
SachDan Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 ICC has to take this statement seriously...this is clear ball tampering he's talking about.

I guess they themselves didn't have that kind of belief in their ability otherwise they would not have resroted to these sort of shady tactics.... Not buyign could have nobody held gun to their head and asked to delve into these ball tampoering tactics.. IF they could have then they shoudl have instead of indluging in this.. And yes in pakistan this might be lclutching at starw but for the rest oif the world is as good as confession.. These folks will awlays have an asterisk attached to their name.. Confessed ball tamperer that is
