Artistic freedom yes, but not with Aurangzeb http://dailypioneer.com/columnist1.asp?main_variable=Columnist&file_name=kanchan%2Fkanchan162%2Etxt&writer=kanchan Artistic freedom in increasingly 'secular' India has come to mean the right to denigrate Jesus Christ and Goddess Shakti, as was done by a callow student of the fine arts faculty of Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda last year. But permission to exhibit exquisite miniatures and firmans related to Aurangzeb has been denied, because 15 Muslims and a bogus nawab have demanded so. French journalist Francois Gautier's Foundation Against Continuing Terrorism (FACT) has painstakingly -- and at great expense -- put together a collection of 40 miniatures and firmans that tell the story of Aurangzeb's rule. The exhibition is called Aurangzeb as he was according to Mughal records. "We have taken care to present all facets of Aurangzeb, including his piety," says Gautier. The collection was first exhibited to critical acclaim at the Habitat Centre in New Delhi. It next travelled to Pune where one lakh people visited the show. It was equally well received in Bangalore where the popular Gallery G hosted the exhibition. FACT then decided to take the collection to Chennai where it was supposed to be exhibited at the Lalit Kala Akademi from March 3 to 9. The exhibition was inaugurated by N Vittal, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner, and B Raman, security expert and former R&AW official, March 3 at 5 pm. Some 100 people attended the inauguration. Since March 4, a continuous stream of people came to see the exhibits. On March 5, a group of 15 Muslims (Gautier says "they were no more than six") affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, Manitha Neethi Paasarai and other Muslim organisations, entered the exhibition hall and confronted FACT volunteers who were present there. Raising their voice, they rubbished the show and alleged that it did not portray the right image of 'their' Aurangzeb. "They threatened they wouldn't allow the show to go on, that they would send hundreds of protesters after Friday prayers from a nearby mosque," says Gautier. The organisers lodged a complaint with the local police station and the next day policemen were posted at Lalit Kala Akademi. Meanwhile, RM Palaniappan, manager of Lalit Kala Akademi, rattled by the protest by 15 men, asked FACT to pack up and leave. He panicked after Assistant Commissioner of Police KN Murali visited the exhibition hall, had a cursory look at the miniatures and firmans (written in Persian and hence unintelligible to him), worked himself into a rage and shouted at the organisers, lacing his diatribe with expletives, before stomping off, threatening to return. On March 6, Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali made a surprise visit to the exhibition at 3 pm. After spending some time looking at the miniatures and the firmans, he lashed out at FACT volunteers and accused them of "misrepresenting facts". He was particularly enraged by two miniatures -- the first depicted Aurangzeb's army destroying the Somnath temple and the second showed the destruction of the Kesava Rai temple in Mathura. He insisted that the paintings amounted to "fabrication and distortion of history" and that Aurangzeb had never done anything to harm the Hindus. He demanded that the exhibition be immediately shut down and said he would take up the issue with "higher authorities" in the State Government. Later, the 'Prince of Arcot' issued a Press statement, claiming, "the exhibition seemed to dwell only on Aurangazeb's alleged misdeeds and not a word about his munificent contribution. The exhibition would only promote enmity between various groups." By Thursday, March 7, "higher authorities" in Tamil Nadu Government had issued instructions to the police to shut down the exhibition. Murali, along with his men, stormed into the exhibition hall on Thursday evening and began taking down the paintings. "He was looking for the paintings showing the destruction of Somnath and Kesava Rai temples. He threw them to the floor," said a FACT volunteer. The police say they acted after receiving "three complaints that the show would disturb communal harmony". They wanted the exhibition to be shut down immediately as the next day was Friday. The police also forcibly took into custody three FACT volunteers -- Saraswathi (65), D Vijayalakshmi (62) and Malathi (47) -- although women cannot be detained after sunset in police stations. They were not allowed to contact their families. The hall has been sealed and FACT has no idea about the fate of the paintings and other exhibits, including the priceless firmans. "I am told some of the paintings have been damaged beyond repair. This is shocking, especially because what we have witnessed is vandalism by the police," says Gautier. And Parzania director gets national award.. what a freedom we have got in place

A communal harmony in India can NEVER be achieved, unless history of India is re-told as it is by including research of neutral Indologists like Francois Gautier. Commie historians like Romilla Thapar and their deep influence in our NCERT text book will really harm India in her long term interests. This myth that spread of Islam in India was fully peacful is the biggest BS shoved down our children's throat through NCERT books. It not only emboldens Islamists in their arguement that Islam is all peace and love but it also in a way prevents them from knowing their true 'INDIC" roots and there by their assimilation in greater Indic culture of India, this is simply because if an Indian Muslim is taught that Islam spread in India by peace, then he will simply hold Islamic invaders like Aurangzeb, Ghazni and Ghauri as rulers and method of Islam propagation in high esteem, thereby it will prevent him from fully realizing his INDIC roots and how they got converted! A non-violent philosophy like Budhism which once flourished in the plains of Afghanistan was totally wiped and yet we see todays Afghanis being proud of wiping Budhism. No Indian will wish Indian Muslims to go Afghan way and feel proud of brutal killings and conversions that followed during islamic invasion of India. Only true portrayal of History will not only benefit correct knowledge it will bring harmony in true sense.

In my opinion , a true portrayal of History should also include the achievements of neglected people from North East as well as the South . For example we hear of Rani Laxmi Bhai and rightly so , but in the same token hardly mention of Rani Chennamma of Kittur . I am sure people of NE as well certain states like Bihar also feel the same way ...

In my judgment, that is gross generalization that is not acceptable here. Discussing religion is absolutely fine, but if anyone is gonna make sweeping statements like that, irrespespective of whether they are percieved to be true or not, those threads will have little chance of survival. So, either you can have reasonable, civil discussion and see your arguments/points flourish, or, make sweeping allegations like that and jeopardize the chances of survival of that thread. The choice is yours.

Show me a thread created by you , BB , Sanstest bashing Jai Singh and his elk ? Talk about hypocrisy , not acknowledging the fact that some Hindus are so twisted that they don't mind serving these Mughal maniacs ...

Very valid point KR bhai. In fact correct protrayal of South India in Indian history will not only reduce the gap between North and South Indians but also it will encourage several other young Indians to take research in History seriously, particularly the commie BS that north Indians are Aryans and tamilians as Dravidans etc. In fact modern Sanathan Dharma and it's philosophy owes it's existence to South India and I feel proud in saying that. Right from Advaita vedanta of Adi Shankaracharya till Dvaita of Ramanuja, South India takes all credit of preserving this rare philosophy of dharma. North Indians particularly miss the history of Cholas.

True we dont create threads but we dont run away from that fact. More later .
Nobody is running away here ... We had tonnes of discussions about this topic .. You are quick to point out the atrocities of the Maniac Mughals and Islamists in general but not a single thread has been created by you , DR and Sandtest talking about the support they got from Hindu subjects .... So much for truth seeking .. Afraid to paint your own community as cowards ?? Ever wondered who some of the biggest traitors of India are ... surprised that the list includes upper caste Rajputs or the Brahmin Peshwas....

I am sorry Sir, but I am providing clarifications out of mere courtesy and nothing else. The fact is, I am not even incumbent to do that. If you dont like what I do, go and complain to other Mods and we will take it from there. As you are probably aware, there are plenty of other threads right now, which openly discuss religion and I havent raised a finger in protest. And as for whats generalization and what isnt, as I said, its my judgement and I dont need tutorials from others on that. As always, if you think what I did is unreasonable, there are other avenues for you to get relief. You are free to use them. BTW, this the last of the series of 'clarification' posts. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows what the rules are. There will be no more to-and-fro discussions, atleast on my side, on whats right and what isnt. Thanks and happy debating.

Why dont you provide your side of the story from your world where everything is hunky-dory by default instead of getting upset everytime and try to hide behind symantics and technicalities ? How did you arrive that we are saying is generalization what you are saying is gospel ? If as you say its only the eeny-weeny-teeny-itsy-bitsy part that is wrong it shouldnt be soo hard to bring about the Glorious chapters from about 800 yrs of supposedly peacefull rule from "Itihaas ke Panne" right ?
Generalization does not work or should work both ways ... If it wasn't for Hindu support ,few Mughals (Babur had an army of approx 12,000) wouldn't have ruled India or Aurangazeb wouldn't have ruled for 40 years . So can we generalize and say that Hindus are cowards and traitors .. Obviously NOT ! It is not Black and White like the way you guys try to paint .. Don't blame everything on Islam or Muslims ...
