This one takes the cake. What he says is literally impossible to do. He is now OK with off-shore drilling, after being uncompromising about it for a long time. He had his party's liberal base (including the environmental lobby) support him to a victory in the primaries. Now that he has it locked up, he starts to move away from what won him the nomination in the first place. Why? One theory is that now he has to appeal to the "on-the-fence" Republicans. Politics as usual.

He specifically mentions two countries/regions which USA citizens have strong issues with. Considering Canada & Mexico account for over 1/3rd of US oil import, plus good reserves in Nigeria, Russia, Norway would mean that even today about 50-60% of oil import comes from non-Middle East/Venezuela. If you add in support of offshore drilling, combined with new technology and possibly more trade agreements with Canada, Mexico he may actually be able to pull it off. That all said, this is more a Political stunt than anything concrete, me thinks.

I still find it strange that both Candidates are against ANWAR drilling ! Although I am an environmentalist , prudence tells me that with the rising gas prices , it would make sense to drill there .

Possibly the worst outcome of George Bush's war has been how it has enriched, and emboldened, its worse enemies - Iran, Russia, Venezuela. With rising prices Russia in particular has managed to gather some good foreign exchange and keeps flexing muscles every now and then, atleast to its European countries. And then this dumb President met Putin and per himself, saw a man's soul!! Seriously how in the world did this war do one remotely good thing for USA? Oil price went high, economy went in the tubes, USA stature in the world got a severe hit, its allies are critical, its enemies happy. How can its policy go so wrong?:((

By the way you should be happy that Oil companies are raking money, they would probably be the biggest SAP shops out there :--D

The only way to replace this is to drill in the US, a policy to which Obama is opposed ... wait a minute, is he really?

Same goes with Defense companies - Navy ,Boeing , Lockheed ,Bell Helicopter, you name it .. they all have SAP implementation.

Initially I thought 'Here is this democrat politician, free from the influence of Neo-cons and the oil-lobbyists, who seriously wants to do some good to the world'... But, listening to his bombastic claims off-late, I have lost hope. He is going to like every other US President; Lots of talk, less of action.

If not, how does one believe him? Why didn't he bring it up back then? Why now when he wants to sell a book? It's hard being a skeptic :-).

Simply because he would then have to prove it. Maybe he could do in Congress but Court of law? I dont see that happening. Also for all the rhetorics Democrats would do nothing. Bush is the President with least popular rating, his rating has been less than 25% in more than 2 years. So what exactly did the Democrats do?? As for selling book making money, unfortunately thats how America works. Capitalism plain and simple. I have seen some of the worst aspects when I saw apartment managements from Texas to Arizona ripping off the poor hapless New orleans victims when Hurricane Katrina happened. This would be teddy bear in front of that.

In India leadres say say much more than this and do exactly opposite. Mulayam had even promised to make Allahabad another Bambai, only to find that Ateeq Ahamed is given ticket :hysterical:
