Brainfade
A question for those who have watched both these men bowl - What makes us believe that Ajantha Mendis will continue to be a terror, while Hirwani was sorted out? Following the 16 he took on debut, Hirwani took a further 20 in his next 3 matches, before fading away. Will Ajantha Mendis be sorted out such? Link to comment
The_Black_Prince
Not likely. Hirwani was home-made roti, only able to perform in very helpful home masalla curry pitches. Mendis has already destroyed India in Pakistan. He will be a force to be reckoned with on quicker pitches. Link to comment
fineleg
I think Mendis will be more stable than Hirwani. However, I wish sooner than later someone is able to dismantle him. Link to comment
Bumper
The difference between the two is NIGHT & DAY. 1) Hirwani was just an ordinary leg spinner. Mendis is a off spinner, leg spinner, seamer, who can bowl off breaks, leg breaks, googlies, doosras, sliders all without significantly changing his action. Mendis is yet another freak, from the land of the greatest freaks. 2) Hirwani preyed on WI batsmen, who were clueless against spin. Mendis has swallowed the famed Indian batting lineup, who are supposed masters of spin. It took a maniac like Sehwag to tame Mendis in one test match (even that didnt stop Mendis from picking wickets around Veeru) 3) For batsmen who are good players of spin, playing Hirwani is a no brainer, as they can read him off his hand. Given his subtle varieties, Mendis has to be read off the pitch. Even Sangakarra (who is an expert at reading spin) admits that he found it so hard to pick Mendis. When you read a spinner who has so much variety, off the pitch, you have to be extremely quick in your reflexes and be able to execute your plan without too much fuss. Veeru did well because he attacked Mendis when he bowled full & played/milked him on merit, when the ball was short or on good length. The rest of our batsmen were too uncertain and/or were struggling for form. Link to comment
