What BS! If Ponting's fitness was in doubt' date=' I am pretty sure they would wait till the morning of the match to decide.[/quote'] But India already know that Kumble is injured and is unable to bowl (just like the 2nd innings in Banglore). Aus would wait for the fitness report in the morning, because he is an asset to the team and lately Kumble has been a liability.

Dhoni set to lead India if needed MAHENDRA Singh Dhoni last night was endorsed as the right man to lead India into battle against Australia in Mohali today if Anil Kumble succumbs to a shoulder injury. Kumble's form and fitness are a worry for India, which does not name a vice-captain for home series. There is added concern that Dhoni, the wicketkeeper, limited-overs captain and heir apparent to Kumble, is yet to establish himself as a force in the Test arena, as distinct from his powerful presence in the shorter forms of the game. But the chairman of India's new selection panel, Kris Srikkanth, said the young, bold poster boy of Indian cricket was ready to lead the Test team if Kumble was ruled unfit. "In this match, if Kumble does not play, as of now it is Dhoni," Srikkanth said. "He has been captaining very well for India and he will be the next obvious captain." There are three former captains in the Indian team — Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly — and Virender Sehwag was appointed Kumble's deputy when Dhoni, who averages 17 with the bat against Australia, opted out of the recent Test series in Sri Lanka, citing his exhausting workload. A decision will be made this morning on the fitness of spinner Kumble, who went wicketless in the Bangalore Test for only the third time in his career.
