Phir wahi?? Arre dont you guys get tired of being so myopic? You have problems when Muslim community dont do anything about an issue. And when the Muslim community does take some action even then you have some issue!! Why not welcome the move without qualifying with a "Although Sangh Parivar..." yada yada. It is like me calling for Sachin Tendulkar's head in 2006 and when he does retire(looks like 2016 that shameless git), I start another thread yapping - I have been asking for his head for 10 years now!! As for the OP, this is a good gesture and needs all kind of support from Indians, and Hindus. Muslim communities across India has undertaken some very positive measures recently. As in: a) Questioning the pervasive culture amongst the youth of Islam. b) Refusing to bury the dead in any Indian qabrastan. c) Forming youth forces to take on perpetrators and assists cops during bad situations http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/FullcoverageStoryPage.aspx?id=bb649041-f1d9-456f-9a2d-3cab8841d90eMumbaiunderattack_Special&&Headline=Muslims+form+force+against+terror d) Muslim mosques in India writing explicitly hardline Islamic groups arent welcome in their mosque. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/28/AR2008062801101.html These, and news like these, need to be highlighted and not your usual bias. Instead of supporting them you, and BB, are more than happy furthering your own agenda! Are you Sonia Maata and BB Arjun Singh by any chance? xxx
These are positive signs. However if there is a modertae islamic community, they need to speak louder and louder. Drill in to islamic community secularism and loyalty to country. This should and must be a world wide thing as well. Change can only come from within islamic community and no where else! Non fundie muslims need to launch a war against muslims to reclaim sanity. Sadly just dont see that happening

religion is not the only motivation you must look to for turning vegetarian. the reason i turned vegetarian was an article published in 1997 in an ecological magazine in india called "gobar times" (yeah gobar as in a cow's dung). the article was an economic study of non vegetarianism. it concluded that in order to grow 1 pound (i presume the article used the metric system so convert all pounds to kilos) of meat, especially meat harvested from the larger animals such as goats, cows etc, the resources expended are equal to the resources used to grow 16 pounds of grain. i.e. the resources spent in nurturing a calf from the day of its birth till the day it is harvested for its meat, where say it weighs 100 kgs, would be about the same as the resources utilized in producing 1600 kgs of grain. furthermore, the caloric equivalence between meat and grains is about 1:3. i.e. the caloric, and nutrient value of 1 lb of meat is equal to that of 3 lbs of grain. thus, for a balanced diet, for every 1lb of meat, one must substitute 3 lbs of grain (appropriately chosen of course). however, if that 1 lb of meat was never harvested, one could have had 16 lbs of grain... more than 5 times the 3 lb requirement. thus in conclusion, the study suggested that the ecological footprint of meat is 5 times that of grain. i.e. there is 5 times more land needed to grow meat than is required to grow grains. there is 5 times more water needed for irrigation, there is 5 times more fertilizers needed, 5 times more labor needed! in the current world where millions starve on a daily basis in our nation alone, an individual choosing to eat meat is doing a considerable disservice to his nation and humanity. i would write more about how the meat industry is ruining the amazon rain forest and how it is destabilizing that region, but i have finals coming up. so i implore to you, start slow, eliminate pork and goat (i doubt you eat steak); then gradually eliminate poultry. eventually you can eliminate eggs.
agree I told you I am hyocrite whenit comes to my eating habit

manu smriti... is that not the text with political directives as to how a nation must be governed? but leave that aside, the most poignant text and the two epics condemn non vegetarianism, so why is there even an ounce of ambiguity about this? lets face it, hindus who eat meat are hypocritical fracks. and if you are a non vegetarian, than you really must look to change that. i turned vegetarian when i was 14 and i have never felt inconvenienced by my choice.
it talks about everythign even eatign habit and which meat is kosher and which is not uderlyign message meat-eating is kind of sanctioned but I don't attach any value to that book but guess few do.

i am not trying to insult you or put you in a spot, i am merely suggesting that it is not fair to point fingers at another faith, how so ever dysfunctional it might be, while not being observant of the faith that you subscribe to yourself. for instance, i dont point fingers at islam for their indulgence in cow slaughtering and beef consumption, because i dont regard myself as an observer of the supernatural elements of hinduism. however, i point a finger at islam and muslims in disdain for their non vegetarian habits that i despise. thus along this system of reasoning, i am arguing that the sang parivar stands to lose popularity by forcing their beliefs on muslims, when in fact they are not doing enough to motivate hindus to be observant of the edicts of hinduism, notably, a vegetarian, non violent, non karmic diet! if anything, i would like to see an india where animals are not slaughtered for any purpose, be it religion (and i have nothing but ridicule for any religion that demands the sacrifice of animals), or diet, or sport!

nonetheless, i suppose it is not considered a holy text. then how is it used to pronounce judgement on matters of spirituality? and how can statements in the manu smriti be used to question the statements in the bhagavad gita? is that not like using an erroneous high school text to question the premise of a doctoral thesis?

Yes in my view manu-smriti is fit to be toilet paper, too much garbage there. Where the heck is Sandy when you need him he is the encyclopaedia on these things.. i am lazy bum these days and do not want to do my own research.
