Martin Guptill has made a spectacular debut into international cricket. Only Shahid Afridi's incredible first innings (102 against Sri Lanka from 40 balls with 11 sixes. Oct. 4 1996) comes to mind as more noteworthy. In the 4th. ODI against the West Indies, at Eden Park, Aukland, Guptill opened with Brendan McCullum (26) and dominated a 68 run partnership. He then added 144 with Ross Taylor (75) for the 3rd. wicket. Daniel Flynn was out for a duck before Guptill and fellow debutant, Neil Broom took the NZ score to 4/275. Guptill was 122* (135 balls) and Broom, 24* (17). Lionel Baker took 2/29. ------------------------------------------------------- Cricinfo profile: A right-hand opening batsman, Martin Guptill was part of New Zealand's 2006 Under-19 World Cup squad in Sri Lanka. He gained recognition in the 2007-08 season, topping the overall State Shield run-charts with 596 runs at 59.60. His efforts took Auckland to the final, which they eventually lost to Otago. He carried his purple patch into the Emerging Players tournament in Australia, finishing the highest scorer there as well for New Zealand with 280 runs. He was later named in the New Zealand A squad for the tour of India in 2008 and earned his first ODI call-up against West Indies in January 2009. Guptill's success is particularly remarkable as he has only two toes on one of his feet as the result of a forklift accident a few years ago.
