The edict was issued on schools in Swat by a Taleban cleric in a radio broadcast last month. A 15 January deadline was set. Owners say the schools will not reopen until the conflict in Swat is resolved, or the Taleban revoke the ban. The government says it will do all it can to protect education. Security pledge School owners in Mingora, the administrative centre of Swat district, say even if they keep the schools open, parents are unlikely to send their children in view of the Taleban threat. "The local administration called a meeting of Mingora's school owners two days ago and promised to provide security to us if we remained open, but no-one is ready to run the risk,", Ahmad Shah, a Mingora school owner, told the BBC. There are more than 350 privately owned schools in Swat, each with separate sections for boys and girls, according to data available from a local association of schools. Over the past year, most of them were ordered closed by the Taleban, except 96 schools that operated in Mingora town. They have now closed, bringing all privately administered girls' education in Swat to an end. The Taleban have destroyed nearly 150 schools in the last year. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said on Friday that the government would work with the provincial administration to protect education, particularly for girls, in North West Frontier Province. She expected a resolution in the National Assembly against the attacks on schools. I hope at some point, the Afghani and the Pakistani people get fed up all the Talibani lunatic nonsense and stand up to them. Ultimately, the change has to come from the people. The govts can throw in as many soldiers, tanks and rockets as they want to fight these Taliban, but the the war has to be won by the people.

They're supporting and praising a government that is killing people worldwide [mass murderers]. They're claiming that the 9/11 and the Mumbai attacks were inside attacks. They believe Israel is a terrorist nation that is the cause of the terrorism around the world. There is no sympathy to be shown here. They deserve the miseries that they are experiencing.

There is no sympathy to be shown here. They deserve the miseries that they are experiencing. If you think ordinary men, women and children living in those areas are actively involved in pro-taliban activities, I am sorry mate, you're dead wrong. The Taleban just terrorizes them into submission. Besides, who wouldnt want a better standard of life? Better roads? Better schools for their children? Of course, there are many Taleban sympathizers among the local population, but if the 99% of the ordinary people have little to do with it. Many times, their hands are forced to support these terror outfits due to a combination of blackmailing, bad policies by the local govt and outside intervention.

They are certainly not directly harmful people. The goal of a typical common man around the world is usually the same- earning a decent living for his family. But somewhere down the line, for various reasons, these people do support the Taliban and other extreme forces. May be because its convenient for them, may be their god fearing upbringing is taken advantage of, may be they are brain washed. The problem is that the growing prosperity of Taliban in Pakistan. Now that Pakistan is cornered, they would love any support coming from anyone. The Pakistani government is useless and selfish. The brainwashed public is not happy with them. They need a leadership to look upto. A leadership that would tell them that they are right and India and the west are wrong. A leadership that would feed them with imaginary feel good stories. A leadership that would tell them that they are the best and how the rest of the world is full of villains always scheming against their community. I am really worried about Taliban's growth in Pakistan. Especially when the government is being looked down upon as a puppet of the western world and indeed they are a bunch of fit for nothing idiots caught in the no mans land.
sandtest Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 This is the major mistake Indians (particular Wagah Candle Kisser crowd) make when they think that Paki tribal area people want modernity and secularism intead of pure Islam. Grounds facts still remain the same, those tribals want to live purest Sunnah way of life -- the way it was in 7th century.For them this life is nothing, compared to "real" afterlife which can only be achieved by practicing 7th century lifestyle as closely as possible. I will say, America shoould leave those tribals on their own and instead seal the border by heavy deployment of troops from NATO and if possible India should send a few thousand troops. Let Tribals spread their pure and heaven bound lifestyle in rest of the areas of Pakistan. As long as this virus is quarantined till Pakistan we shouldl not have any problem!

Many of your points are valid and I totally agree with you. When people are oppressed, deprived and taken advantage of, they'll ultimately turn to extremism. Thats basic human nature.
