Thanks for posting/moving the article here! The author has probably summarized all the probables for the NZ tour, barring strange (Sachin forbid) injuries. I hope the batsmen who play the in ODIs can get some idea as to how the pitch behaves and get accustomed to the weather there. I am hoping for an excellent tour, cricketing wise (and based on some pics recently, scenery wise too!).

Kulkarni lucky; Trivedi, Pankaj not so More... Kulkarni lucky; Trivedi, Pankaj not so G. Viswanath Dhawal Kulkarni is not a tearaway The Indian seam attack put together has played 94 Tests 2009021461992401.jpgYOUNG TALENT: Dhawal Kulkarni has been rewarded for his fine domestic performances with a place in the Indian team. Mumbai: Dhawal Kulkarni is lucky to have won the National selectors’ nod for the three-Test cricket series in New Zealand. In the absence of Ajit Agarkar for a major part of the current first class season, the 20-year-old Kulkarni led the Mumbai pace attack with aplomb and ended the season with an impressive tally of 49 wickets in 13 first class matches at 22.02 with four five-wicket hauls. Moreover, Mumbai and West Zone skipper Wasim Jaffer and coach Praveen Amre encouraged him and on his part, he demonstrated the knack of taking wickets with the new ball, forcing the opposition on the back foot. He turned out to be the linchpin in his debut season in first class cricket. The slightly-built Kulkarni is not a tearaway and is a far cry from the likes of Raju Kulkarni and Salil Ankola. These two were quick and yet were not in the express class. Paras Mhambrey manipulated the seam and Abey Kuruvilla, trained by Frank Tyson and the last seamer from Mumbai to play for India, was regarded genuinely quick in his formative years. The lanky seamer had to wait for seven years before Ramakant Desai (chairman of selectors in 1997) gave his approving nod. In 12 months, Kuruvilla had a hand in the dismissal of 50 batsmen, 25 each in Tests and One-Day Internationals. A blessing In that sense, Kulkarni, has been blessed, selected for a Test series ahead of a seasoned and successful seamer like Gujarat’s Siddharth Trivedi (200 first class wickets in seven years) and who developed into a smart bowler, especially playing under Shane Warne for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL last season. Less than a year ago, Rajasthan’s Pankaj Singh (33 matches, 106 wickets) was given a break when Dilip Vengsarkar’s committee named him for the Test series in Australia. Pankaj did not play a single Test match, but bowled superbly to some of the top notch England ‘A’ batsmen at the Motibaug Palace ground at Baroda. No luck While Trivedi has all the reasons in the world to feel miserable after a highly-rewarding first class season, Pankaj has not had the luck since his return from Australia last March. Trivedi is tall, accurate, has the ability to extract bounce and has been efficient in with the new and old ball. Pankaj is a genuine swing bowler. It’s unfortunate that Trivedi and Pankaj do not fit into the selectors’ and team management’s scheme of things. The lack of fitness of R.P. Singh and S. Sreesanth appears to have paved the way for Kulkarni’s selection.
