Playing with Abandon vs. Playing under pressure

Why is it that many times while there is still hope, our team crumbles, and just when all hope dies, you see a flurry of runs from the tailenders (or like that flurry of boundaries from Dravid). Begs the question: should our batsmen go into the field stoned and high so they can play with abandon ? :hic:
