Results - Day 10 Quarter Final 1st quarter final :Uttar Pradesh defeats Himachal Pradesh by 34 runs 2nd quarter final :Baroda defeats Hyderabad by 7 wickets (with 118 balls remaining) Round-up of Ranji one-day tournament 2008-09, Quarter-finals: Chawla heroics to take UP to semi-finals UP, Baroda enter semis Chawla lifts UP into semifinals Uttar Pradesh, Baroda make semifinals KOLKATA: Hyderabad’s decision to bat first against Baroda backfired in the quarterfinals of the all-India Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout one-day tournament here on Monday as the South Zone runner-up lost early wickets and could post only 167 in 49.3 overs. Baroda overhauled the target in 30.2 overs to move into the semifinals against either Bengal or Delhi. Uttar Pradesh beat Himachal Pradesh by 34 runs in the other quarterfinal. Though it looked dry, the pitch retained enough juice to aid the bowlers, especially left-arm pacer Ikram Zampawala, whose deadly first spell of 6-3-5-3 spelt doom for Arjun Yadav and his boys. Opener D.B. Ravi Teja curbed his attacking instincts to help his team recover with a 52-run association for the fourth wicket with Anoop Pai but the two left-arm spinners Rajesh Pawar and Swapnil Singh made life miserable in the middle overs with a tight 10-over spell each. In the process Singh grabbed three wickets for 25 runs to ruin Hyderabad’s chances. Teja 77 (137b, 6x4) made his highest score in 16 matches. The pitch eased out when Baroda began the run chase. After opener Kedar Devdhar’s early dismissal, Shailesh Solanki and No. 3 Azhar Bilakhia took the Hyderabad bowling to the cleaners with a 72-ball 76-run partnership to help their team take charge. If Solanki’s knock of 59 (49b, 10x4) was a gem, Bilakhia’s innings (50, 67b, 2x4, 2x6) was solid. Then, No. 4 Rakesh Solanki came in and scored a breezy 56 (57b, 4x4, 3x6) to help Baroda win with a lot to spare. Competitive score Uttar Pradesh struggled initially at the MBB Stadium but steadied the innings to post a competitive 210 for eight in 50 overs thanks to a workman-like 40 (66b, 5x4) by Shivkant Shukla, a fine 55 (79b, 4x4) by Ravikant Shukla and quick-fire 56 (46b, 4x2, 2x6) by Piyush Chawla. Two quick wickets by Bhubaneswar Kumar rocket the Himachal Pradesh reply. Bhavin Thakkar came up with a solid 60 (90b, 8x4) and Ajay Mannu scored 33 (56b, 1x4, 2x6) but their efforts proved in vain. Chawla was the pick of the bowlers with four for 41.

News from the second round of Quarter final: Delhi : Team left to fend for itself after lack of consensus Kolkata : Shukla retained as captain for knock-out phase Mumbai : Will it be 'three cheers' for Jaffer & Co? Preview of the matches Delhi vs Kolkata Face-off: Twist in the tale Agartala, March 04, 2009 First Published: 00:14 IST(4/3/2009) Last Updated: 00:16 IST(4/3/2009) The Delhi and Bengal players are yet to get over the shock following the turn of events in Lahore, but they have to concentrate on Wednesday's quarterfinal of the national one-day championship. The way the pitch behaved in Monday's match between Uttar Pradesh and Himachal was another source of concern. Both captains were contemplating reinforcements in the spin department. Reflecting on his trip to Pakistan in 2003-04, Aakash Chopra said off-spinner Yogesh Nagar would return. Numbed by the attack on the Sri Lanka team, Laxmi Ratan Shukla later said off-spinner Ritam Kundu was also awaiting a recall. The teams have been forced into other changes too. Delhi have replaced injured opener Shikhar Dhawan and Gaurav Chabra is likely to come in. Chopra said he was yet to decide who would partner him at the top or who would make room for Nagar. The vacancy in Shukla's XI was created by Sourav Ganguly, who withdrew after the zonal games. Kundu is expected to take this slot keeping out either opener Abhishek Banerjee or middle-order bat Dibyendu Chakraborty. Delhi have a score to settle, having lost to Bengal in the same stage of the competition last year. Chopra had reason to be upbeat, successfully chasing 305 against Railways on Saturday. On the flip side, the absence of Dhawan is a concern because it makes Delhi's batting somewhat top-heavy where Chopra and Virat Kohli have scored a bulk of the runs. Bengal have the resources to test the Delhi batsmen if Ranadeb Bose or Ashok Dinda get early breakthroughs. All-rounders Shukla and Avik Chowdhury can be effective on such pitches if they maintain the tight line they bowled in the zonal games. Batting remains their problem and although the top five scored moderately in the zonal games, the lower order didn't. The Delhi attack is nowhere near the best in this tournament but Bengal are still in no position to feel good about it. The captains will also remember that the toss might play a vital role because batting second wouldn't be easy if the strip to be used at Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium on Wednesday behaves like the one used on Monday. Low scores on the card A 200 on the black-soil pitch at the MBB Stadium can be handy, which is why the Bengal think-tank will look up to the new-ball combination of Ranadeb Bose and Dinda to dislodge the Delhi top-order, particularly Kohli. “We have done plenty of homework on the Delhi team’s two departments. I have full belief that we can attack them on both fronts. There’s no use in just singling out one or two players as the threats,†said Shukla. Chopra, however, is excitedly looking forward to the Bengal challenge as a grudge match. “The Bengal match is a grudge match for us, we have old scores to settle. We lost to them last season, and tomorrow is our chance of getting even. We are confident of beating them,†Chopra said. “We have done our home work well and looking forward to this match,†said L.R. Shukla, captain of Bengal. delhi’s run so far League February 15: Beat J&K by 112 runs February 17: Beat Punjab by 7 wkts February 19: Lost to Himachal by 2 wkts February 21: Beat Haryana by 139 runs February 23: Beat Services by 6 wkts Pre-quarters February 28: Beat Railways by 2 wkts Tamil Nanu vs Mumbai TN takes on Mumbai AGARTALA: South Zone champion Tamil Nadu will take on West Zone No. 1 Mumbai in the all-India Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout one-day tournament here on Wednesday. Leading Tamil Nadu’s charge will be S. Badrinath, one of the most prolific run-getters in domestic cricket. Tamil Nadu is likely to go into the game with seven batsmen and four bowlers. Seven-four combination “We always preferred seven-four combination, said captain R. Ashwin. Ashwin also felt that Mumbai’s bowling is a bit short on experience, which might help his team. Mumbai will not have the services of Aviskar Salvi, W. Mota, and Ramesh Powar, owing to injury and other reasons. Coach Praveen Amre said this Mumbai side is a mix of youth and experience. “Nearly half a dozen boys are from the under-22 side and will depend on skipper Wasim Jaffer and fellow opener Ajinkya Rahane and veteran Amol Muzumdar for runs. Usman Malwi and Abhishek Nayar will lead a young bowling attack,†he said. “Both teams will be under pressure. “It all depends on how the teams perform in the last 10 overs. TN has done well so far and we are looking for a good contest,†the coach said.

Premier Cup, strange rules I was watching todays Q/F and it was 47 game between Delhi and Bengal. The compulsory powerplay was 10 overs and other two powerplays were 5 and 4. and it turned out both were bowling powerplays, there were no batting powerplays. Why is that?? Is BCCI that stupid, now following the latest rules??

Results : Day 11 Quarter Final 3rd quarter final :Tamil Nadu defeated Mumbai by 56 runs 4th quarter final :Bengal defeats Delhi by 2 wickets (with 5 balls remaining) Reports Ranji Trophy one-day tournament, Quarter-finals : Tiwary guides Bengal home in tense finish, TN knocks Mumbai out Tiwary knock sends Delhi crashing out TN deliver Mumbai the knockout punch Mumbai end season on a sour note Planned my innings well, says Manoj Hard-hitting Tiwary leads Bengal into semifinals Well begun is half the job done. It stayed that way for Delhi on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as they frittered away a dream start under the circumstances and lost to Bengal by two wickets to be knocked out of the competition, reports Atreyo Mukhopadhyay. Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary's unbeaten 96 was the highlight in a close finish. Packing the side with four spinners on a wicket where the ball turned significantly Delhi , were lucky to be sent in as Bengal thought they would make use of the moisture on the pitch which delayed the start and cut the match to 47 overs per side. Their hopes dried out as fast as the wetness and the new ball bowlers put in a wayward show that helped Aakash Chopra and Manan Sharma put on 79 in 14.4 overs. Playing his first season, Sharma was the dominant partner. With the ball coming nicely onto the bat initially the , left-hander drove smoothly in the cover-point region and also clipped a few fours over midwicket from the middle-leg line. It was because of his enterprise that Delhi made 99 runs in the power play overs, reduced to 18. The innings started degenerating following Chopra's run out and the captain's senior colleagues in an inexperienced set-up - Mithun Manhas and Rajat Bhatia - fell in the same manner. Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla's wicket-to-wicket gentle medium and Iresh Saxena's sharp left-arm spin from a consistent off-stump line did pin them down, but the three run outs hurt them the most. Their eventual total was looking distant at 159/8 in the 39th over and Delhi owed it to a desperate 50-run stand between Punit Bisht and Praeep Sangwan. Of the three they grassed, two catches were offered by Shukla, but that didn't cost much. The first one cost them the match. Tiwary was on 10 and Bengal were a shaky 46/2 in the 13th over when Chetnya Nanda's spin took the outside edge and the ball slipped out of wicketkeeper Bisht's gloves. The Delhi Daredevils righthander didn't err again and shepherded Bengal home with a high-class innings coming off 106 balls. TN in semifinals AGARTALA: Tamil Nadu exacted a sweet revenge for its last year’s defeat at the hands of Mumbai with a comfortable 56-run win and moved into the semifinals against Uttar Pradesh in the all-India Vijay Merchant Trophy one-day knockout tournament at the TIT ground here on Wednesday. The other semifinal will be contested between last year’s runner-up Bengal and Baroda. Bengal defeated Delhi with five balls to spare, thanks to a match-winning unbeaten 96 by Manoj Tiwary, in a contest reduced to 47 overs a side at the MBB Stadium. Tamil Nadu, put in, rattled up 252 for nine in 50 overs. In reply, Mumbai was restricted to 196 in 45.5 overs. S. Anirudha and K.B. Arun Karthik produced a rollicking 75-run stand to give a superb start to TN’s innings after left-handed Abhinav Mukund left early. Thereafter, TN did not look back with the top order contributing useful scores. Anirudha (67, 88b, 6x4, 1x6), Arun Karthik (38, 46b, 5x4), S. Vidyut (33, 52b, 2x4) and R. Ashwin (46, 37b, 1x4, 1x6) were the principal scorers. There were useful partnerships as well which enabled TN to push the score to 252. The best part of Mumbai bowling was when the two spinners, Iqbal Abdullah and Vikrant Yellegati, were operating. Backed by keen fielding, the two managed to shackle the TN batting but late order hitting by Ashwin and U. Sushil helped South Zone win. Mumbai’s reply was strong as it tried to make full use of the power play. Skipper Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane took on the pacers and played some pleasing shots in front of the wicket. When V. Yomahesh had Jaffer edging to wicketkeeper for 27, Mumbai sent in pinch-hitter Abhishek Nayar who hammered 36 off 16 balls with eight fours. Mumbai slumped from 84 for one to 87 for four losing the cream of its top order. Prashant Naik and Aditya Tare did try to repair the damage in the face of some inspired spin bowling by Ashwin, Suresh Kumar and Vidyut. When Mumbai suffered the second run out in which it lost Naik, TN took control of the proceedings.

Results-- Day 12 Semi-finals 1st semi final : Tamil Nadu defeats Uttar Pradesh by 35 runs 2nd semi final : Bengal defeats Baroda by 81 runs Reports : Ranji one-day tournament 2008-09, Semi-finals : Bengal and Tamil Nadu win low-scoring ties Shukla leads from front Bengal, TN set up title clash A South-East finale TN takes on Bengal in final Suresh Kumar (94) shores up TN Bengal beats Baroda by 81 runs AGARTALA: Tamil Nadu came up with a team effort on Friday to defeat Uttar Pradesh by 35 runs and enter the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day knockout tournament. Waiting for the South Zone champion would be last year’s runner-up Bengal. In making its second successive entry into the final, the East Zone champion defeated Baroda by 81 runs, thanks to skipper L.R. Shukla’s allround show (49, three for 33). Trouble Batting first, T.N. ran into trouble losing five wickets for 48 runs, but thanks to S. Suresh Kumar’s 94 it was able to post a fighting total of 197. U.P.’s newball sensation this season, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar along with R.P. Singh accounted for four T.N. wickets — S. Anirudha, Abhinav Mukund, S. Badrinath and Arun Karthik — by the eighth over, and it looked like U.P. would rout the opposition. However, the fifth-wicket pair of S. Vidyuth and Suresh Kumar provided 24 runs. When Vidyuth was bowled by Imtiaz Ahmed for 19, head and shoulders dropped in the T.N. camp. Rescue Then, captain R. Ashwin and Suresh added 38 runs for the sixth wicket, Suresh gaining in confidence and posting his one-day best score. He was also involved in a 41-run partnership for the seventh wicket and a 66-run eighth-wicket stand with Ganapathy (27, 39b). The target looked achievable, but R. Sudeesh found an early breakthrough dismissing Tanmay Srivastava. T.N. maintained the pressure with tight bowling and extraordinary fielding and with the exception of Ravikant Shukla (56, 87b, 4x4) none of the U.P. batsmen applied themselves. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was the most boring round with none of the India hopefuls doing anything!

Preview : Final Bengal look to go the distance TN looks better on paper Grudge match for Bengal vs Tamil Nadu Vijay-Hazare final - Battle of equals in offing Atreyo Mukhopadhyay Agartala APPLICATION AND steadfastness will matter more than flamboyance in the days of power play when Bengal take on Tamil Nadu in the national one-day championship final on Monday . On a surface that has restricted stroke-play so far, slower bowlers and middle-order batsmen will play a pivotal role and Tamil Nadu seem to be holding an edge on the first count. They have quite a few bowlers who can take the pace off the ball. Off-spinner Ritam Kundu's wrist injury is a concern for Bengal and they flew in Priyankar Mukherjee as standby on Sunday . What evens out things interestingly is the fact that Bengal have played at this venue twice. Tamil Nadu have played both their matches at the other venue where the ball comes nicely on to the bat. That way , Bengal batsmen by now should have a better knowledge of the track and the strokes they could employ . Talking about depth in batting, the teams appear to be evenly placed, if their semifinal wins are something to go by . Tamil Nadu overcame a top order collapse to give their bowlers something to defend, while Bengal got 227 without a half-century, which indicates that they found contributions from almost everyone rather than from an individual. This is something the teams will rely on unless someone comes up with an extraordinary performance. The question of application is in no way restricted to the batting departments. It's important that the bowlers get the length right apart from the line, for the ball to do that bit extra and keep batsmen guessing. Focus on Badrinath and Tiwary Potentially this battle of attrition has the ingredients of a duel too and this pits Manoj Tiwary against S. Badrinath. As the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day cricket tournament nears its end on Monday, it is but obvious to dwell on two characters who may win the game for their teams. The two, S. Badrinath of Tamil Nadu and Manoj Tiwary of Bengal, are the trump cards for their sides. The two have some common virtues but differ in many ways. Both bat at No. 4 and are capable of winning the match single-handedly. They are excellent fielders in the 30-yard circle and capable of inspiring teammates to greater deeds. If Badrinath is calmness personified, Tiwary is an extrovert who likes to be in the thick of things. Both have been around the Indian team before losing out to others and this is a stage for them to not only outdo each other but to also send a message to the national selectors. Application holds the key for both. 09_03_2009_018_007_008.jpg

Bengal had a poor start but recovered thru a counter attacking 3rd wicket partnership between aggressive players- Wriddhiman Saha who opened and Manoj Tewary. they joined at 18-2, in the 7th over and have already scored almost 60 runs in the next 9 overs. Tamil Nadu wins Vijay Hazare trophy! `This is not breaking news, in fact "yet to break news":haha: Tamil Nadu are the deserving winners of the domestic 50 overs trophy. the TN team won the trophy convincingly beating Bengal team in the final today. Bengal which earlier in the season lost their Ranji trophy quarter final match against Tamil Nadu at Bangalore after dominating the first 3 days, was looking for revenge. But Tamil Nadu team proved their allround skills and put the contest beyond Bengal's reach after breaking the threatening 3rd wicket partnership between Tewary and Saha. Manoj Tewary scored 76 off 87 balls
