The Outsider Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I have been at my brother's graduation the entire weekend(on which I will probably blog some time later) and just found the time to read most of the posts on the elections. I must say the section has been flooded with well though out posts from both BJP and Congress supporters. A lot of what I wanted to say has already been said and countered so I'll keep this thread restricted to the first thing I am feeling great about which has not been discussed. UP has been screwed for the last 20 years by all political parties of various shades and colors, but they have finally stood up and voted the way I like voters to vote in a pluralistic democracy like India and specially UP - throw out all non performers. Of the 80 UP seats, 60 were being fought by incumbents and 45 of them got booted out. If this on one hands reflects the regression in UP development it sends out a clear message that we need a Naveen Patnaik or Nitish Kumar. Finally UP has voted for development despite massive attempts of social engineering by all political parties. In fact, a party which was supposedly dead in UP - Congress - came out with the best unexpected numbers. There were people predicting even a bigger rot for them than last time, including me for most part of the campaign. But towards the end talking to my friends and family there, it seemed they were the only ones talking about development. Rahul Gandhi, for all his lineage, has struck a cord with the voters of UP with his talk on development. None of his campaigns in UP were based on caste and social engineering mantra followed by the competitors and he has marked an unthinkable revival of the Congress there. It used to be said years back that the road to Delhi goes through Lucknow and I am glad those days returning where UP will once again play a pivotal part at the center rather than being a disruptive force as it has been through the BSPs and SPs.

First things first Shwetabh. What did you wear at the Graduation? I ask because I have to be at one this weekend. I am pretty much a jeans - tshirt guy so I hope suits and formals are not desired.

I am pretty much a jeans - tshirt guy so I hope suits and formals are not desired. I am about to leave for the actual ceremony - in Jeans and a semi formal shirt. This is just the culmination of on one the most tied up weekends I've seen - there is a ceremony and function for every damn department and organization you've attended or been a part of. But the undergrad parties at the end of the night were worth it, even though I used to leave early being the big brother.:giggle:

I would hate to travel with a suit and nice pair of shoes when all I need is a couple of jeans and a rugged shoe.
