Desi Cartman Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 KOLKATA: A 10-year-old urchin was accused of theft and thrashed for hours by an Eastern Railway employee at Howrah station on Thursday afternoon. Biswajit Haldar (28) claimed that the child, Sheikh Laltu, had stolen his purse containing a cellphone and other valuables. Haldar tied up the kid's hands, rained blows on him and beat him with a stick, leaving him bloody and badly bruised. Haldar, an employee of the electrical department at the Asansol division of Eastern Railway, was returning home from work on Wednesday night from Asansol. He was fast asleep when the Himgiri Express that he was travelling in reached Howrah station around 2 am. Half an hour later, some urchins entered the train to pick up rags. One of them, Sheikh Laltu, tried to wake Haldar up to get off the train. When Haldar woke up, he found his bag missing. He immediately suspected the urchins had stolen it and started hunting for the kids. He finally spotted Laltu around 10 am on platform number 6. He caught hold of him and started accusing him of stealing his bag. He warded off anyone who tried to stop him from beating Laltu by claiming to be a GRP personnel. "When the boy denied having stolen the bag, the youth tied his hands and started beating him up with a stick. Whenever some commuters came to stop him, he threatened them to stay out of the matter," said a Howrah GRP officer. Commuters came and went, but the heartless accusations and beatings continued. Haldar kept on beating Laltu like a man possessed till 1 pm. By this time, Laltu had several lashes on his body. The blows that Haldar had meted out with a stick had stripped the skin on Laltu's back and a stream of blood was oozing out steadily. Seeing the boy thrashed such, some commuters then called in the GRP. During interrogation, Haldar revealed that he was an employee of the Eastern Railway. Haldar has been detained. Laltu was taken to Howrah General Hospital for treatment. ................................................................................................................................

Lurker Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I don't know whats new but I can tell you what is NOT new, the apathy of Indians and maybe even the timidness. One sentence that did catch my attention was - Commuters came and went, but the heartless accusations and beatings continued. Obviously everyone was caught up in his own world that he did not have time for this child who could not save himself.

And trust the torch bearers of human rights who get all wet when Khalid Sheikh and other al qeeda thugs get water boarded ignore this thread !:winky: a little child's misery is a platform for you to push your trivial politics? i am sure you parents are proud. returning to the topic at hand, there needs to be a campaign to inform the masses of their civilian rights. for instance, any detention, temporary or prolonged without an appropriate warrant must be resisted; people ought to know the power of a citizen's arrest. and above all, if the malfesants are particularly recalcitrant, use those fancy cell phones to shoot a video or pictures or both and plaster it all over the web. on occasion, such instances are picked up by the media and thus the authorities are bullied into action. but above all, stop the abuse if you can. if you hit a bully in his face, he is quite unlikely to return without reconsidering his chances.

And do yourself a favor , visit India more often rather than once in a blue moon to understand it's executive and judicial machinery better. Their is a limitation to the knowledge acquired through google. Your post suggests exactly that .

I don't usually decend to the significantly lower level of individuals such as you to indulge in the use of profanities. if you wish to hear a profanity, merely look in the mirror. and last i checked, i did mention something constructive that might be done to fix this problem. i.e. bring media attention if direct intervention is not possible. what did you do apart from connect this to an entirely different debate where just about every one of your counterpoints was effectively rebutted. the thing is, you are one of those fence sitters who claims moral superiority since you feel that you are amongst the intelligent few who see the world as 'grey' and not black or white on polarizing issues. however, a closer examination would reveal that you are either too stubborn or just not zealous enough to adhere to any moral ideal. you find 'exceptions' to everything... eventually you find yourself in a position where you dont have any ideals, you engage in excessive posturing, and all the fence sitting gives you a serious wedgie.

Its better if the Railway Authority doesnt allow urchins in stations to begin with. Sad story. or maybe, the railway authority can organize them into a staff that is permitted on railways to provide the cleanup duties, and are afforded basic human rights.
