Google takes aim at Microsoft with new PC platform

Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system. Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well. Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010. "Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog. The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said. The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

Google's Android OS for mobiles is widely acknowledged as revolutionary and way ahead of its competition, but it did not steam roll the competition from Windows. I personally feel Google's OS would be groundbreaking but can it break Windows monopoly? Well we will have to see....

The reason why Android didnt steamroll the competitition is because of poor roll out strategy on the part of the wireless carriers not Android itself, more specifically signatories of the Open Handset Alliance. Sprint and T -Mobile signed on to roll out Android, yet till date only 1 Android phone exists the G1. Thats about to change with 16 Android devices expected to roll out by year end.

Linux is also free. :headshake: It wouldn't be new if Google OS was free.
Linux is not easy to use, is it? If Google brings in an OS that is easy to use, is similar to windows and uses less resources, I think quite a lot of us will switch. I definitely will.

Ubuntu is good, but Google will come with it's own base of loyal users. How many days did Gmail take in gaining popularity? Almost everyone who does not use IE anymore, has a version of chrome installed....even if FF remains their default browser. Google's products don't find it difficult to gain popularity. That's a huge plus from a marketing point of view. It may not upstage windows as the most used OS, but it will create its own market.

I am willing to try as long as they don't upload crap stats of everything from my PC to their server,for some webadvt, to popup everynow and then. I am sure it will be hell lot better than MSWin

From one effed up licensing model to another effed licensing model. While MS is guilty of trying to make money at every turn, Google has basically started a culture of "free for all" that will essentially rip apart the very basic nature of industry. Why pay for something when you get it for free? Sure Google will get its money but everyone that depends on the OS technology, read IT developers, would be well shunted out. Early days yet but makes me wonder whatever happened to normal (read middle path).

This comment is based on Google desktop and Chrome experience. Chrome is much faster lightweight browser than IE, but with almost hte same functionality. Google desktop is faster - but uploads some stats of search to their server [so does their toolbar].

Does it say the OS is going to be free ? It is gonna be open source but that doesn't mean it is free ,right ?
