More Asian teens 'using steroids'

A growing number of young Asians are using steroids to try and build up muscle and achieve the perfect body, according to drugs workers. John Bolloten, a needle exchange co-ordinator in Bradford, said the number of Asians using his centre has jumped from about 5% to between 25% and 30%. While only a small number traditionally used street drugs, they were now "primarily using steroids", he said. Most anabolic steroids are classified as class C drugs. The drug increases testosterone levels in the body, which then helps muscles absorb protein and boosts their growth. Mr Bolloten told the BBC Asian Network steroid users visiting the needle exchange in Bradford were also getting younger. "It worries us because the people who are coming forward to use needle exchanges are becoming younger, so we seeing people at their late teens to mid 20s - they are forming a big percentage." Needle exchange centres in Luton have also reported a significant increase in Asian men using their services. They said 84% of Asians visiting them take steroids. 'Look the part' Abu, 26, from Bradford, said he has a high-protein diet, works out every day and has been using steroids for eight years. "It's that image, everyone wants to look good, look the part, I always wanted to look good, have the six pack, the biceps and big calves." He describes himself as a skinny, average teenager who wanted to beef up after seeing his brothers use steroids. But he recognises there can be some unwelcome side-effects. "Some of my friends who take them have flipped out and done crazy stuff. It plays with your sex drive, without a doubt, it does worry me, you always think the worst, what if I can't have kids?" People who use anabolic steroids usually either inject a cocktail of hormone growth substances into their body or take them orally as pills. Steroids are not illegal to possess but it is illegal to sell them. They can have dangerous side effects and cause aggression, mood swings, baldness, infertility and in some cases heart attacks. Charities like Bridge, a drug treatment charity in Bradford, say most people buy them online, from their personal trainers or friends who have imported them from places like Pakistan. 'Easy fix' Barry Langleyman, a specialist harm reduction worker at the charity, said there is too much pressure on teenagers to look good. "They see it as an easy fix, and they won't have to put as much effort into their training. It does increase their performance in the gyms - they can lift bigger weights, their stamina increases and endurance. "They do work, that's what we are up against - we can't argue, we have to accept they do work." He said he is worried about the ignorance surrounding steroid use. "They don't see it as drug use they see it as a supplement to training regime. They will often go into a shop thinking you can buy them over the counter." Part of the problem is often when people come through the door, they have already started a course, he said. "The practice around here is people who sell it will give them the first few injections. By the time they come to us, they've spent their money, so to try and pull them back from that is very, very difficult." But not everyone wants to be helped. "I think if I stopped I wouldn't feel as good or great about myself. A lot of girls come to you and look at your biceps - it can be quite flattering at times," said Abu. "If I don't train I get depressed, I don't feel as good. When I train I feel happy." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8158081.stm

It is essentially a sign of our times. Everyone wants a short cut. Books on tape sell faster than books, ready to eat dishes disappear faster than veggies in a supermarket, looking up solutions on Internet is more in demand than working your rear end off. Why should health be any different? Although I do find it hilarious to see young kids sporting muscles and unable to do basic routines in the gym. For overall strength nothing beats old-school balls-to-wall exercises. They still have not made any steroids for them. xxx

I have seen a lot of people who are clearly on them. They are mostly after women I reckon...but steroids as a male from sub-continent originally' date=' attracts bad women from the culture. Usually who***.[/quote'] That is hardly the case at all. Some guys use steroids as a short cut, pretty much true to most things in life today. Some guys (specially in mid 30s and 40s) use it to decrease their body fat, and elderly folks use it to boost their Testosterone levels. Nothing wrong with the last two(in my book). Testosterone therapy in particular can be great for elderly folks what with enhanced confidence, better mood etc etc. However the catch of course is to deal with it in the proper supervised manner and not over the counter drug route. As for appealing to opposite sex everyone does that. You telling me you buy those jeans and tshirts because your male friends would appreciate it? Or because you look good in them (for chicks)? xxx

Tell me about it. It is a sad reflection on our times that "fitness" is becoming synonymous with outwardly appearance rather than general good health, stamina and strength.

i was actually thinking abt messing with clen or T3 myself to loose some fat ...' date=' bad idea?[/quote'] Bad idea if: a) You are in your te(e)ns or 20s. b) You do it without doing homework or better still under an expert supervision. Clen and T3 by themselves are very potent. When you stack them together you damn well know what you are getting into. You will have to do it in cycle. Say you run 6 weeks cycle. In week 1 you will use a small dosage to assess the tolerance, week 2 you would up it a bit, 3-4 would be maxed out and then you slow down the dosage to minimum so your body doesnt get used to it. Once cycle is finished you will have to do a PCT (Post cycle therapy) with another testosterone/aromatase binders. And after all this do a detox to make sure lever/kidney are intact. Is it worth it? Not for a commoner no. For an athelete/bodybuilder who has a support staff yes it definitely works though. xxx

hey lurker, i had a couple of questions for you. Around August 2008 I was 5 7 170 pounds. Then in Feb I started doing some very light weights and resistance training and in April I was 5 9, 160 pounds. In the summer semester I've been keeping the same regimen but had cricket practice for about 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, plus games on the weekend. I checked the weight scale and I'm now about 148 pounds, and 5 9.5. 1) At what weight should I be at before I start to increase how much I eat? Or should I not worry because in September I won't be able to keep up this intense training (cricket practice, I'll keep the weights going) because of school. 2) What do you think is the ideal weight for me? I'm about 5 9.5, still growing, playing competitive cricket and basketball. 3) Can you recommend some exercises that can increase vertical leap? Should I do squats or get into the gym to use the machines? appreciate it bro

Your eating regime will depend on your goals. If you are around 5'9 close to 150 pounds that means you are in fairly good shape. If you want to pack muscles you will have to eat more though.

Kind of hard to guess. If you carry it well then probably 160-165 would be a good number. However make sure its not a plumb 165.
3) Can you recommend some exercises that can increase vertical leap? Should I do squats or get into the gym to use the machines?
Jumping rope would be first one. It will get your whole body, specially lower half get used to the mechanism of jumping and landing on feet. So I would buy a 10 dollar jump rope and just go nuts with it. Toe raise squat. Basically have a barbell on your shoulders then lift from your toes till you are vertical. Then come down till the heel touch the floor. Repeat for high reps(25 plus) Jump squat. You can do it with weight or without weight. Just do a regular squat and when you come up jump so your feet rise a few inches off the ground. You may want to start with just the body weight. This will get you great overall strength but specially in your hams and glutes that you will use for vertical leaps. Good luck mate!

hey lurker, i've been doing some of these exercises that you've mentioned and seen some immediate results. I'm now dunking a mini basketball on a 9'3. Interestingly enough my brother and brother in law have joined me and we're on this vertical leap program called "Air Alert". It does many of the exercises you've mentioned and it's a 16 week program. It says it should make atleast a 6 inch difference. I need another 12+ inches to dunk a 10 footer! Being 5 '9, my reach is measured at about 7'4, and from a standing vertical I'm getting to 8'7, which means a standing vertical leap of 15 inches (It was about 13.5 before I started doing your exercises). My running vertical maxes out at 20 inches. My brother in law has the exact same stats as me, in terms of reach and standing vertical, and my brother who's 5 '11 1/2 can reach to 8'10 and has a standing vertical of 17 inches. So it'll be interesting to see what happens in 16 weeks. I'm gonna put everything I have into it because I don't wanna lose to these guys! I'll keep you guys posted.
