Gambhir wins Castrol best cricketer of 2008 award

Mumbai, Sep 17 (PTI) India opener Gautam Gambhir today edged out teammate Virender Sehwag to be named the Castrol Cricketer of the Year 2008 at a glittering function here today. Gambhir, who was declared fit today to travel to South Africa with the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy after missing the previously held triangular series in Sri Lanka, received Rs five lakh and a trophy. The left-hander, who scored over 1000 runs in Tests and ODIs in 2008, also won the best batsman of the year award while feisty off-spinner Harbhajan Singh won the best bowler of the year honours, worth a trophy and Rs two lakh each. Swashbuckling batsman Sehwag and India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni were declared the Test and One-Day cricketers of the same year. Out of action since May because of a shoulder injury, Sehwag was personally present to receive the award while Dhoni, having addressed a media conference a couple of hours earlier at the same hotel, did not attend the function. Both received Rs two lakh and a trophy to go with the award. .

Mumbai: Gautam Gambhir was declared the Castrol Indian cricketer of the year 2008 at a function here on Thursday evening. It was touch and go between the Delhi left-hander and his opening partner Virender Sehwag. From among 113 former India cricketers, who had either played one Test or five one-day internationals, Gambhir received 51 votes as against Sehwag’s 44. Sehwag in fact led the points table with 59 to Gambhir’s 52, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 48, Harbhajan Singh’s 41 and Ishant Sharma’s 37. But after nomination process, it’s the voting of former India cricketers that determine the winner and here Gambhir who had scored in excess of 1000 runs each in Test and one-day internationals received seven votes more than Sehwag. Gambhir was also declared the Indian batsman of the year and he received a cash award of Rs.7.5 lakh. Castrol disbursed Rs. 25.5 lakh as cash award in eight categories. Dhoni, Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh were adjudged the Indian ODI cricketer of the year, Indian Test player of the year and Indian bowler of the year. Castrol also chose Rahul Dravid (184 catches in 134 Tests and getting past Mark Waugh’s 181 from 128 Tests) and Sachin Tendulkar (first batsman in Test history to score 12,000 runs) for special awards. Former India captain and stylish batsman Gundappa Viswanath was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Sunil Gavaskar presented him the trophy and a cheque for Rs.5 lakh. The Castrol award winners: Gautam Gambhir (Batsman of the year: Rs.2 lakh, and Indian cricketer of the year: Rs.5 lakh), Virender Sehwag (Test player of the year: Rs.2 lakh), Harbhajan Singh (Bowler of the year: Rs.2 lakh), M.S. Dhoni (Indian ODI player of the year: Rs.2 lakh). Ravindra Jadeja (Indian junior cricketer of the year: Rs.1 lakh), Rahul Dravid (Special prize for being the world record holder for the highest number of catches in Test cricket: Rs.2 lakh). Sachin Tendulkar (for becoming the first batsman to score 12,000 runs in Test cricket: Rs.2 lakh). Gundappa Viswanath (Lifetime Achievement: Rs.5 lakh) and Rs.50,000 each to Gambhir, Sehwag, Harbhajan, Ishant Sharma and Dhoni (for being nominated for the Indian cricketer of the year).
