Carnage as car bomb hits Peshawar

At least 91 people have been killed after a huge car bomb ripped through a busy market in Peshawar, Pakistan. The attack, which injured at least 200 others, was the deadliest to hit Pakistan this year. Similar attacks have killed hundreds of people in recent weeks, as the army carries out an operation against Taliban militants in South Waziristan. The blast came as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton began a visit to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. Mrs Clinton told a news conference the US was "standing shoulder to shoulder" with Pakistan in its fight against "brutal extremist groups". The Taliban have denied being behind this bombing, but the government blames them for a wave of attacks apparently launched in response to the army operation against their strongholds on the Afghan border. The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says that few people will take the Taliban's denial seriously and they remain the major suspects for the bombing - if only because few other groups would have a motive for carrying out such a devastating attack. The blast tore through buildings in Peshawar's Peepal Mandi market street, destroying several - including a mosque - and leaving others on fire. The market mostly sells products for women, and most of the dead were women and children. "There was a huge blast. There was smoke and dust everywhere. I saw people dying and screaming on the road," eyewitness Mohammad Siddique told AFP news agency. Crowds dug through rubble to rescue people. 'We will not buckle' Medical staff appealed for people in Peshawar to give blood. Some complained that the authorities were not prepared to deal with the aftermath of such a large attack. "There were a lot of wounded people. We tried to help them but there were no ambulances so we took the victims on rickshaws and other vehicles," Muzamil Hussain told the Associated Press. "There were no police. The police and government didn't help us, the police even opened fire on us." Security has been stepped up across Pakistan, but the government still appears to be unable to stop the attacks, the BBC's Mark Dummett in Islamabad says. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi promised that the country's resolve would not be shaken by "such heinous crimes". At a news conference in Islamabad with Mrs Clinton, he told potential militants: "We will not buckle, we will fight you. We will fight you because we want stability and peace in Pakistan." 'Brutal extremists' Mrs Clinton is in Pakistan to discuss US concerns about the increasing numbers of militant attacks and the security of the country's nuclear weapons. She condemned the "vicious and brutal" attack in Peshawar and said the fight against the Taliban was "not Pakistan's alone". "Pakistan is in the midst of an ongoing struggle against tenacious and brutal extremist groups who kill innocent people and terrorise communities," she said. "We commit to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistani people in your fight for peace and security, we will give you the help that you need in order to achieve your goal." Last week, Pakistan launched an offensive in South Waziristan, which is considered to be the main sanctuary for Islamic militants outside Afghanistan. Correspondents say the Peshawar blasts will come as a violent reminder for the US of the difficult task it is facing in the fight against the Taliban, both in Pakistan and across the border in Afghanistan.\\ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8329244.stm

Pakistan paying the price for fighting someone else war.
I really don't understand... why do you keep repeating this almost every post in this section. Understand this. This war was coming to you after your support for the terrorists in the 80s and 90s. but definitely feel sorry for innocents here... they are paying the price of their government policies.

Pakistan paying the price for fighting someone else war.
Ok, then - here comes the Clinton retort - Stop fighting the war - lose your territory, lose all the dole money from US and go down to utter chaos!! By the way, these terrorists are not some transplants - they are your own home grown gravy whipped up during Zia's days in the 80s. Bon apetit!! RIP innocent lives :((

Pakistan paying the price for fighting someone else war.
If that's the mentality of plenty of other Pakistanis, no wonder the country is such a ****ing mess right now if people are unwilling to take some iota of responsibility and face a problem head-on and instead are just looking for scapegoats and excuses.

Deadly blast hits Pakistan (10th Nov) At least 10 people have been killed and 15 injured in a car bombing in the north-western Pakistani town of Charsadda, police say. The blast occurred at a busy traffic intersection in the town, which lies north-east of Peshawar. Details are still emerging. Some reports put the death toll higher. More than 300 people have been killed in a wave of attacks since Pakistani troops launched an assault against the Taliban in South Waziristan. 'Emergency' Police have not yet confirmed whether Tuesday's blast was a suicide bombing. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. "A vehicle was used in this bomb blast. I can't say whether it was a suicide attack or whether the bomb was planted," district police chief Mohammad Riaz said, the AFP news agency reported. Ambulances ferried survivors to hospitals in Charsadda and Peshawar, 40km (25 miles) away. "We have declared an emergency in the hospital," a doctor in Charsadda told AFP. The attack in Charsadda is the third in as many days in North West Frontier Province. On Monday, a suicide bomber killed himself and at least three people near a police checkpoint in Peshawar. A day earlier at least 12 were killed in a suicide bomb attack near the city. Last month a massive blast at Peshawar's Peepal Mandi market killed 118 people. The government blamed the attack on Pakistani Taliban, but the head of the group denied being behind it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8352445.stm

10 killed in Pakistan mosque attack (Dec 4) Terrorists stormed a mosque packed with Friday worshippers near the Pakistani army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Friday, killing at least 10 people and injuring over 20 others. The unidentified assailants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately with automatic weapons after entering the Jamia Masjid near Parade Lane in Rawalpindi, witnesses and police said. The firing was followed by more powerful blasts, witnesses said. Chief military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas said 10 people were killed. TV news channels reported over 20 people were injured. There was confusion about the total number of terrorists involved in the attack, which occurred shortly before 2 pm local time. Some witnesses said seven to eight gunmen stormed the mosque while others said about 20 assailants were involved. There were also reports that the gunmen had taken some hostages within the mosque and were exchanging fire with security personnel. However, these reports could not immediately be confirmed. Gunshots were heard till about 2.20 pm local time as helicopters hovered over the area. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. LINK
