MUMBAI: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) members on Monday attacked state Samajwadi Party chief Abu Azmi inside the legislature The day's proceedings started smoothly with several members taking oath, wary of a so-called 'open letter' by MNS chief Raj Thackeray this morning urging all 288 legislators to take their oath in Marathi. However, Azmi had declared that he would not be intimidated by such threats by "extra-constitutional authorities" and announced that he would take the oath in the national language Hindi. "If they try to stop me, they could attract privilege proceedings," he declared, minutes before stepping inside the high security Maharashtra legislature at Nariman Point. When his turn came, Azmi got up to take the oath in Hindi. Even as he uttered the first few words, MNS members, all of them first-timers in the House, sprang up from their seats, shouted slogans and rushed towards Azmi. As Azmi continued to take the oath in Hindi, MNS's Ramesh Banjle uprooted the microphone and threw it away. Other MNS members came and surrounded Azmi, pushed and punched him and one member Ram Kadam was seen on live television slapping and hitting him on the chest and shoulders. Stunned by the goings-on, several members, including newly-appointed ministers like Congress' Rajendra Darda, Nationalist Congress Party's Ajit Pawar, Peasants and Workers Party leader Meenakshi Patil, and several others, rushed to shield Azmi from the MNS members' wrath, but even they were pushed around. The Protem Speaker Ganpatrao Deshmukh immediately adjourned the House for over half an hour. However, the MNS members continued their aggressive stance, indulging in sloganeering, displaying banners and damaging the fittings inside the assembly. Chief minister Ashok Chavan, who was present when the MNS members created the ruckus, termed the incident as "regretful" and urged that the legislators should be dealt with very strictly. Defending the actions of the party legislators, MNS spokesperson Shirish Parker even argued that Hindi was not the national language of the country.
Why is it allowed ? why cant these morons be arrested and tried ? Last I heard physical abuse was against the law ...

I am not sure what surprised me more. a) Bunch of goons, selected by Marathi janta, who raid the well of a Legislative house and beat around a fellow Member of Parliament on live television. OR b) A history sheeter who has alleged to have done a couple of murders himself and has old ties with Dawood Ibrahim, shouting Jai Hind! xxx

Two reasons Suma: 1) I personally would be equally shocked if a Bihar history sheeter chants Jai Hind, Jai Bihar when he is assaulted at the floor of the house. 2) Isnt it fascinating how Maharastra, specially Mumbai/Bombay, has fallen down recently? I mean Bombay used to be comparable to other great cities of the East(read Singapore, Hongkong etc), for the simple reason it was head and shoulder above the rest of the country. These days even the staunchest of Marathi supporters does make that comparison and instead chooses to compare with the rest of India, tells a story doesnt it? xx

but thats ' what has been going on since atleast i started following politics used to get shocked earlier now it doesn t affect me.its sad but since its india and indian politics you expect such things. And people around are least bothered. Yes maharashtra /mumbai has fallen down really bad and its people both the rich and the poor living in the city which are equally to blame for it as is the govt in case of mumbai especially .It was head and shoulders above the rest of indian cities mainly because of its cosmopolitan nature and it being the so called city of dreams .The same cosmpolitan nature of the city has been its downfall. if there is seemingly more ghettoisation and intolerance in mumbai it is happening throughout the country since mumbai represents mostly population from all over the country .While mumbai has stagnated in this decade other cities have progressed. Continuous migration with govt turning a blind eye to it , rampant commercialistaion of each and evrything .Unplanned development,The numbr of malls and theatres residential complexes that have come form Dahisar to borivali is crazy which has led to detoriation rather than development. because there is no infratructure to support it as in proper roads,24 hr watersupply . In comparison the number of open spaces have shrunk considerably. In case of the state its the incompetent governance we have had over the years from manohar joshi to deshmukh to shinde to deshmukh and even before that. They say chavan is better but from his approval of a rs 350 crore shivaji memorial statue rather than using the money to solve the power and agri crisis . I beg to differ with others

MNS MLAs create uproar over 'Hindi' oath,Man handle another MLA MLAs of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Monday (Nov 9) created ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly after Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Asim Azmi took oath in Hindi despite their call that all legislators take the pledge in Marathi with one of the members from chief Raj Thackeray's party slapping him. Soon after Azmi began taking oath in Hindi, the 13 member-strong MNS contingent rushed towards Azmi, snatching the mike placed for taking oath at the podium. MNS members shouted slogans, demanding that Azmi should take oath in Marathi. The House was adjourned for 30 minutes as the pandemonium continued and soon after that MNS MLA Ram Kadam slapped Azmi. And, speaking to the media after the commotion in the House, Abu Azmi said he would sue the MLAs who had assaulted him. Chief of Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh reacted saying that such incidents are unconstitutional and should not take place. General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh, reacting on the incident of ruckus in the Maharashtra assembly slammed MNS MLAs for the ruckus. He went on to say that the Congress has promoted Raj Thackeray. RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the way MNS MLAs have treated Abu Azmi for taking oath in Hindi, they will be responsible for creating a division in the country. "The PM should immediately call an all-party meeting to discuss the action to be taken against MNS for deliberately indulging in anti-national activities," he told reporters. "The behaviour of MNS legislators who assaulted the SP MLA for taking oath in Hindi defying the diktat of their party chief Raj Thackeray is highly condemnable. It should be treatead as an act detrimental to the country's integrity and unity," Prasad said. He urged the Election Commission to derecognise MNS and take steps to disqualify the MLAs responsible for the assault today. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Energy Minister Ajit Pawar tried to restore calm in the House. Maharashtra Government would examine video footage of speeches by MNS leaders to check if they "instigated" party MLAs, leading to the assault on SP legislator Abu Asim Azmi in the Assembly today. "The video footage would be investigated to check any instigation by the leaders during their earlier speeches," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan told reporters. Condemning the ruckus created by MNS members in the House, Chavan said "their attitude was unlawful and they tried to attack the members of House. So, the Government moved a resolution to suspend them from the House for four years." Prasad said he would raise the demand in the forthcoming session of Parliament. But, the MNS has defended its actions in the house. Speaking to TIMES NOW, MNS spokesperson, Shirish Parkar stated that the party was proud of what it had done. Meanwhile, in a fallout of the commotion that occurred in the Maharashtra Assembly today, tension has gripped the town of Bhiwandi in Thane district. After violent clashes broke between SP and MNS supporters, SP supporters resorted to pelting stones and setting vehicles ablaze in protest against what they called was the humiliation meted out to Azmi. Bhiwandi has a sizeable North Indian migrant population and is a stronghold of the SP and Abu Azmi. MNS Chief Raj Thackeray had last month announced that his party legislators would ensure that all MLAs took oath in Marathi. "If any MLA does not take oath in Marathi, the House will see what happens," Raj had threatened. Because democracy is a strange thing. This sort of behavior works in Maharashtra. The government is scared of losing votes if they stop MNS because MNS is viewed as a party "fighting for the Marathi culture" by the general Maharashtrian people.

Its not limited to Maharashtra, similar things have happened in UP assembly as well. My question is , why cant the culprits be arrested and tried for assault. Why ? This suspension from the sabha for few weeks doesnt mean anything. Its a criminal offense and they should be tried for that.

Maybe we should let go of true democracy and have a few rules on who gets to vote and who gets to stand in elections. Ofcourse, it would be easier for the government to arrest politicians caught breaking the law, disqualifying them when they lie esp. about the opponents to get vote, but that is never going to happen.

No, they won't be tried. I remember something from the past: A police officer in Rajsthan (I think) came to know about a recently widowed woman being forced to become a Sati by people. He tried to stop. But you just don't arrest an entire village and put them behind the bars. He arrested some of the family members, but the local MLA soon called and asked him to let them go. Then came the MP. Their argument was simple: We want votes, so we have to keep people happy. If they want a sati, so be it. Whatever the majority want. The cop tried to go higher up, but soon realized that he was fighting a lost war. The whole system from Delhi central government to the local MLA to the judiciary and the police became mute spectators as the woman was burnt alive. I had heard it from a local boy who was with me in college. That shows how things can go terribly wrong in politics. What is happening in Mahrashtra now is no different. It'a bout what people want. That's democracy, is that not? People can be impressed with such gunda gardi. The government is too coward. They know that this kind of politics works in Maharashtra and they don't want to be seen opposing that. Nothing can be done. Not a single thing. Just be embarrassed and watch the shamelessness of our politicians and our own countrymen.

Shiv Sena men would have made 'tandoori' of Azmi: Bal Thackeray

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has held Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi "responsible" for Monday's mayhem in the Maharashtra assembly and said his party men would have made a "tandoori" or roast of somebody like Azmi for having hurt Marathi pride. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said that though elected from Maharashtra, Azmi took the oath as legislator in Hindi and not Marathi, and therefore he was beaten by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) lawmakers. Stressing that the Sena was born on the issue of Marathi pride, Thackeray said in the past the Shiv Sena has carried out many such campaigns against the use of Hindi and English in the state legislature, especially by its senior member Diwakar Raote. "If somebody like Azmi had come in Raote's hands, he would have made a 'tandoori' out of him, and removed his skin," the editorial declared. "That (Marathi pride) has been the Shiv Sena's philosophy always and would also remain in the future," he noted. However, Thackeray lashed out at the MNS for the violent behaviour of its legislators inside the assembly. He said that nobody can support the violence and pandemonium created by the MNS members in the assembly Monday. "The proceedings of the assembly or parliament must be carried out as per rules and decorum, it cannot be reduced to an 'akhada' (wrestling pit) or a vegetable market." Azmi was slapped and pushed by MNS legislators inside the assembly Monday for flouting the party diktat of taking the oath as legislator only in Marathi. Reacting to Thackeray's views, Samajwadi Party state president Abu Asim Azmi said that Bal Thackeray was "approaching the last stages of his life and has lost his mental balance". "In fact, despite all his efforts the Shiv Sena could not come to power again and he is feeling very upset, so he talks anything," Azmi said here Tuesday. The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine lost the Maharashtra assembly elections held Oct 13.
