gaurav92 Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Mahendra Singh Dhoni didnt come at no.3 today after having betted so well at that position the other day at Rajkot.WHY? He sees the fllowing things before coming on to bat at no.3 1) Team India is off to a flier and he can play his tuk tuk game and boost his average 2) The pitch is absolute belter, very much conducive for batting. 3) All the moisture that was in it early on has been trickled out to naught. 4) The opposition has got poor spinners so that he could smash the odd balls to the boundary. 5) The conditions are very good for batting. In todays game, Dhoni found out that the start wasnt good.So lets just send in Gautam in to face the moving ball(evenb though its only for 5 to 6 overs) and let him survive the tougher part, i will come when there is absolutely nothing in the pitch for anyone and score a 50 to get my average bossting everytime
hatja_tau Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Isn't it good that he's actually conceding that he isn't apt for the new ball compared to say - Gambhir?.. Horses for courses IMO.. Also, I think its a team decision more than anything!
DomainK Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Isn't it good that he's actually conceding that he isn't apt for the new ball compared to say - Gambhir?.. Horses for courses IMO.. Also, I think its a team decision more than anything! Quite right. When the ball is still new, Gambhir is far better equipped to handle it. But if the first wicket falls late, Dhonis is quite a good no3. It's simply a question of who is better suited for the situation. And it's a bad habit to look for negatives in everything.
CSK Fan Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 The non-availability of UV might also have been a factor here. We needed a middle order experienced player who will play the last few overs
champ Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 dhoni need not take batting burden everytime .. ideally i want him to play always at 5 or 6 .. but he is not selfish .. and he is definitely not a pussy :punter:
S.Bond Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 he surely is selfish.... and all the points you have pointed are absolutely true... In the last match their was NO Yuvraj, so dhoniwas the only indian capable of hitting the ball in death overs, but he stillcame in at three when therewas no need for him to come as sehwag was keeping the run rate over 8 lonely... but Mr dhoni saw easy runs and came in... He always do that... make easy 50's when yuvraj, shewag or tendulkar are blasting from the other end... Never promotes his self in difficul situations, or does he??????
kooljatt Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 ok, so when will Kohli get his chance to have a bat ? after the series against mighty bangles ?

Or records are just for Mr Dhoni?

It's called using your resources effectively. You won't understand because you have never seen your captains do it.
Sachinism Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 S. Bond, Since when is batting at 3 'easy runs'? If it was that easy shouldn't all number 3 batsmen be scoring heavy runs? Dhoni has an amazing batting record at 3, don't have because he is able to play well in that position.

I heard all Pakistan's batsmen refused to bat at no3 and the captain Yusuf sacrificed Umar there.:haha:

And Dhoni's strategy seems to be getting us more wins
Karan114 Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 S.Bond and his ilk are hilarious. Kid, give it up - Dhoni is a champion in ODI cricket, several times better than your best players, don't even try your trolling on this.
saneindian Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 The criticism that Dhoni comes to bat at number after get a good start is a little OTT. Dhoni has batted at no. 3 on 5 occassions out of the 69 matches he's been captain in. 1.http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/386533.html We were 14/1 when he came to bat, scored 94 in 96 balls, we scored 332 and won by 67 runs. 2. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/366623.html We were 69/1 in 11 overs, scored 84 in 89 balls, we 273 in 38 overs, won by 53 runs. This was the 1st ODI of the NZ series after we had lost the 2 t20s losing a bunch of wickets in first 6-7 overs trying ti hit everything out of the park. He came at no 3 in this match and then even when we got good starts in the kater matches didnt come, perhaps his way of telling his batsmen to play with some patience and esnure they make use of a good start. 3. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/377315.html We were chasing 160 in 22 overs, were 84/1 after 10 overs, MSD scored 46* in 34 balls and we won. This was after the 2nd ODI in WI where we were 95/8 at one stage. 4. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/403383.html We were 95-1 in 18 overs, dhoni scored 56 in 62 balls, we scored 319 and won by 46 runs. This was after the dead rubber between Ind-SL when both had qualified and we had failed to chase 300 plus total by SL. 5. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/430886.html We were 153/1 in 20 overs, dhoni scored 72 in 53 balls, we made 414 and won by 3 runs. Again the 1st match of a series after the no 3 hadnt done too well in 5-6 games of the previous series. Now 5 times out of 69 ( out of which we have got great starts in most of the matches) isn't being selfish but rather being smart enough to ensure we use our resources wisely and get a win for the team. In any case, all 5 occassions, we won the match and there shouldnt be any complaints on that.
saneindian Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Another stat to look at. Since Dhoni became a captain, we have had 20 50+ opening partnerships (including 8 100+ partnerships). http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?captain_involve=7593;class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=fow_score;partnership_runsmin1=50;partnership_runsval1=partnership_runs;partnership_wicketmax1=1;partnership_wicketval1=partnership_wicket;spanmin1=15+sep+2007;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=fow;view=innings Now MSD has come at no 3 on 4 out of these 20 occassions. So again, the myth that he comes at no 3 when we are in a good position doesnt stand ground. There are other reasons, match situations, form of players etc which are taken into account to make such decisions.
