After more than 800 runs were plundered in the first ODI in Rajkot, Mahela Jayawardene has called for lifting restrictions on bowlers, including relaxing the one-bouncer-an-over rule and leniency in the definition of a wide in ODIs. "I have always been critical of the fact that bowlers now have to bowl in the 'strike zone' basically," Jayawardene said ahead of the second one-dayer in Nagpur. "You can't bowl down the leg side. Anything outside the off stump is a wide. "With the Power Plays and all the restrictions it's important we give bowlers leverage as well. Another option would be to give them another bouncer. Give them two bouncers an over. Restrictions are probably easing up and have given them a bit more in third Power Play. But we need to balance it out a bit more." It has been a batsman-dominated tour so far, with big runs scored in the Tests and Twenty20s. In the first ODI on Tuesday, Sri Lanka fell three short of overhauling India's 414, which would have made it the second-highest successful chase ever. Jayawardene expected plenty of runs in Nagpur as well but said the bigger size of the ground should make the totals lower than in the first ODI. "It was a really good wicket at Rajkot. It was a fast outfield and smaller ground. History shows it's a high scoring ground," he said. "Here it's a bigger ground but a really good wicket as well. We need to adjust to that and to the different combinations. It's a fresh start." India's batting unit is working well and the loss of three first-choice bowlers - Muttiah Muralitharan, Thilan Thushara and Dilhara Fernando - to injury adds to Sri Lanka's worries. Jayawardene, though, was confident the replacement bowlers would step up. "I don't see a problem. Obviously injuries in the past have taken good players away from us but we have not stopped playing or winning. It's a good opportunity for another guy to show what he's capable of."
Whats funny is this is from the most notorious FTB of all time!

he may be a FTB .. but his views are excellent in current context .. he is hoping for a balance between bat and ball .. i hope others follow suit in supporting sporting pitches than trying to just boost averages on flat tracks .. well said jayawardene :hatsoff:

one rule that will do bowlers good is allowing them to bowl more than 10 if they take wickets Picture this, Bhajji was best bowler, and he had taken 2 wickets, he should have allowed to bowl upto 12 hours, 2 bonus overs as he had 2 wickets. This needs to be implemented ASAP

We have plans for Sehwag: Mahela Age Correspondent Nagpur Dec. 17: Despite having faltered at the finish line in Rajkot on Tuesday, the Sri Lankan camp looked upbeat ahead of the second one-dayer against India here. "We have lost a lot of close games before too. But the good thing about the game in Rajkot was that we came all cylinders blazing and while chasing 415 for a win we missed the mark only by three runs. There are a lot of positives that we can take from that match," former skipper Mahela Jayawardena said on Thursday. Asked if the team would be affected by the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando, out of the series with finger injuries, Jayawardene said, "I don’t see it as a problem at all. Injuries have taken away a lot of key players in the past too, but we have gone on to win games." With the pitches coming in for a lot of criticism, Jayawardena chose to steer clear of the controversy. "Well, batsmen-friendly pitches are not new. The bowlers are used to it and these things do happen in one-dayers. But the good part is that the bowlers will come back hard at the batsmen," he said. On Lasith Malinga’s availability for the second game, Mahela said, "He had a training session today. He went for a long spell with the ball too. He should be playing tomorrow." Asked about Sri Lanka’s plans to contain Virender Sehwag, Mahela said, "We have made plans in the past for Viru but he is just too good. He has given us some tough times on the field. He takes the game away quickly and bats without fear. But we do have some plans in place and hope to get him out soon." On the morale of the team, the 32-year-old said, "Our confidence levels are high. We will be looking to put the pressure on the Indians straightaway on Friday." * More...
