Walked into CCI two days ago with Delhi 170/4 and Agarkar bowling crap on what I initially thought was a patta. Then came Powar, who proceeded to run through Delhi with a fantastic spell of spin, loop, drift and bounce. Wonderful experience watching a very smart but unheralded spinner bowling classical offspin and bringing about a fantastic collapse. [PS: No wonder we had such over rate problems... felt like a fking eternity watching Ishant Sharma getting through one over. Jesus christ, shorten yr runup!!! Photos later.]

How many people turned up to the match? Not many, unfortunately. Entry was free. Between the 'regular' stand and the members area there would have been 300 tops. How was the pitch? A Kanpur type exploding turner or a slow Sri Lankan turner? Wasn't exploding, but there was good bounce for the spinners and a fair bit of dust. Oh and how was Vikas Mishra? More questions to come.. Good enough to remain not out in the collapse. :P He bowled well, good control and consistency, attacked well and I'd like to see him play for the A-team/in Duleeps in the near future. Other pics. I mean.. there must be some means by which these Hollywood and Bollywood mofos stay in shape and even get 6 packs.. So why cant we make Powar to get a 6 pack and bring him into the t est side.. he is a good bat lower down the order too

He has been one of most consistent bowlers in Ranji over the years and he did ok in ODIs- the series in Eng a few years ago springs to mind. itll be nice to have an alternative to Bhajji. Or is he just to unathletic? Also, does he have the variety to cut it as a international player- particuarly as a test bowler?

There've been other fairly round players (Rod Latham comes to mind quickly, so does Mike Gatting) who could play. At the end of it Powar is an excellent finger spinner capable of outthinking batsmen and getting wickets with his flight, dip and variations in turn and pace, and it's a shame he does not get more recognition from the selectors.

Mr. Wicket Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 It would be sad if selection for test cricket starts to depend on a hit and giggle format of the game that has nothing in common with actual test cricket. Powar has been a phenomenal player for Bombay most of this decade and has routinely impressed in the past in Ranjis, Duleeps and even the occasional Irani or A-team game. There's enough evidence why he should be given a better chance rather than just an odd game.

Saved Bombay's **** a lot of times earlier in the decade and between 02-04, played some really vital roles with the bat between 6 and 8 to help us to a couple of titles. Meanwhile, scored a hundred yesterday v. North Zone.
achilles Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Powar is highly underrated but he's an absolute delight with the bat and ball is Ishaaaant Phaaaasst ? He is express pace. 138ks. For some Indian fans, he's the poor man's Brett Lee :giggle:
