Warne to ease Indian unrest

SPIN king Shane Warne has a date with Victoria's leaders to find ways to bowl over tensions between India and Australia. Premier John Brumby has booked an early February meeting with Warne to discuss how to address issues stemming from violent attacks on Indians. A spokesman for Mr Brumby confirmed he would meet the cricketing champion next month after the possibility was flagged on radio last week. A public relations operation could see Warne spinning in a new way and comes after a St Paul's Cathedral service of prayer for "peace and the welfare of all Indians in Australia". Can Warne help solve the tensions? Have your say below. Melbourne's Indian community welcomed news of Warne's involvement, saying his incredible image in India and Australia would help build bridges. Warne has a huge profile in India after a record-breaking Test career with Australia and with his Rajasthan Royals' success in India's IPL league. In a Triple M interview last week, Mr Brumby conceded there were tensions between the Indian and Victorian communities that had to be fixed. "There's a lot of friendship between Australia and India, and this problem we've had in the last year is, sort of, eating away at that relationship," Mr Brumby said. All options are on the table, with public opportunities to demonstrate goodwill between the two nations one priority. Yesterday, Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne Dr Philip Freier led a service for Indian welfare and urged Victorians to send a strong message against violence in the community. "We have a responsibility to initiate friendship, offer hospitality and confront evil, including racism," he said. Federation of Indian Students of Australia spokesman Gautam Gupta said he had spoken to Warne about helping to smooth tensions between the two communities. "He understands Indian culture and Indians love him," he said. "When political leadership fails, we need to look to community leadership."

We need a campaign to inform people how migration is going to help Aus in the long run .. There is misconception that Migration is bad for the economy. Sububs after suburbs are getting built only because of Migrants but people dont realize it .. neither do people know that in a decade or 2 Aus wont have enough working people to support pensions or healthcare for the retired

I think that Australians are just worried about them taking the jobs off the locals. There is a rising unemployment level amongst Australians, yet migration is going to increase. I don't think it's right, we have plenty of migrants living here already. It's good for the country, but too many more is not healthy in my opinion.

It's good for the country, but too many more is not healthy in my opinion.[/quote'] of course people think that there are jobs going to the Indians which they could have done but let me ask one thing, do you think if an Indian student/migrant goes for an interview and so does an Aussie, whom do u think has better chances of getting the job ? IMO there are plenty of jobs but Aussies dont want to drive cabs, dish washing ( which students are doing ) neither do I think that we have enough Aussie IT programmers or CPAs and thats what a lot Indian residents are doing. I think there is a fear but honestly, there is a massive skill shortage. I was conducting interviews for a role in IT and I received around 14 applications , trust me not even a single Aussie ( I mean White :P ) applicant. So how does a random Joe who is on public support going to become a programmer :hmmm: Other thing, since the population of Aus isnt much , even an influx of 50000 migrants can be a lot visible especially in the CBD or in certain suburbs. Thats why we need to educate people that we do need *some* migrants plus we make trillion dollars from the education business so we better accept them and keep them happy :--D

Instead, learn to compete. A lil bit of competition doesn't hurt anyone. And what about the billions of dollars Australia earns every year thanks to the visiting Indian students? If people out there have a problem and think Indians will "steal" their jobs, tell them to get their sorry backsides off the bed, remove the condom, throw away the bottle of beer and actually work :two_thumbs_up:.

It depends what job they are going for. You are right though, they do bring a lot of good to the country and a little bit of competition is always a good thing. I still don't think that migration levels should be increased though, as it is it's fine. But achilles made a good point in his last paragraph. It's just aussies are generally lazy!

I know the bad ones are an embarassment to Australia but continuously denying that they exist gives further credence to their actions. Acknowledge that there is a problem and accept the mistake. It is the first step towards a solution.

So why are Aussies mad at Indians there?? I thought they got pissed off because of Indian team almost beat them last time on the home ground and Indian student supported Indian team on their soil??? :giggle:
