Would you support day/night test cricket ?

I do not think that, this would diminish what we have known and enjoyed as classical test cricket. For me, anything that allows for a result should be pursued. Question: What difficulties do you day/night test cricket can bring for the batter ? bowler ?

Dont support it . Worth trying it but will be epic fail because ball makers have already said that no ball can last 80 overs except red cherry.

Then have the white ball, when the flood lights are on... Just adds to the game IMO. No point in living in the dark ages and following 150 year old rules. Test cricket has progressed from timeless tests, 6 day tests and 8 ball overs to what we have now. If day/night cricket is more progressive, why get stuck up by keeping to "traditions" that have and must change.

It is not only about traditions. Although those do play a role. Modi has not thought about several things. Would we keep changing the white balls after 35 overs or so? What happens to the dynamics of Test cricket then? We have seen how much of an effect batting under lights has had in limited overs matches. Do we want that to happen in a Test match as well? Bowlers are already having the rawer deal. If this were to happen, we could as well use bowling machines! There would be little to no swing under lights and spinners would be reduced to being slow bowlers. The ball would speed up onto the bat and make it even more easier to play strokes. I find Modi's suggestion on Test cricket ludicrous given the circumstances. Of course, cricket could also be telecast during rain with a covered stadium. Do we want to do that and take away what is probably the biggest factor in cricket - the effect of nature on the playing surface as well as the ball itself. In my honest opinion, Modi wants to look at the target audience and give them something to be delighted with. But he wants to do that even though there is no product available in the first place. Poor show. And his talk about broadcasting making or breaking the game shows where he is headed. The players and the game comes first. Not the broadcasting. Without the game and the substance within, there is no broadcasting. Not for the first time, I wish these forward thinking administrators group had at least a couple of people who had actually played the game.

Good points. The problem with Modi here is he hasn't really looked at what are the real reasons for people not turning up to test matches. Until recently people were forced to buy tickets for 5 days, Modi talks about people working in the day, so thats why we should have day/night games. But when BCCI were doing 5 day tickets, who exactly did they expect to turn up? People who work will get 5 days off? or people who don't work will spend their life savings to buy 5 day tickets? Another thing is the facilities at the grounds, a lot of them don't provide proper shade or seats. Maybe they should look into improving the experience for fans, by upgrading facilities

One of the issues in limited overs cricket, is the effect that dew, playing under lights, etc. have on the outcome of the game in day/night matches. Now suddenly this won't be a problem in Test cricket? The way I see it, this is more about enhancing the commercial value of the game, without giving a damn about how the sport may be negatively affected by the proposed change.

Bset way to improve Test match.. 1. Play in good pitches..(but here Broadcaster feel Bad .they fear revnue loss if matches finished within 3/4 days) 2. Play has to be involve SAturday and Sunday...many matches Starts on Monday :--D but i think eventually D/N tests will start once popularity reduced in England.....

Yeh thats true, they're not going to create good pitches to make good matches, because they need to make sure everyone's pockets are filled, instead they're going looking for 'innovative' ways of improving the game

You're right about the pitches, we won't get good pitches because Money speaks the loudest. Play over weekends will draw bigger crowds at the grounds as well as higher viewing numbers for the telecasts.

There are chemicals to negate the dew factor but they are not that effective and even the ropes aren't any good. So unless they find a solution for the dew issue there is no point in holding day/night matches.

I don't think people have realistically thought about it beyond what colour balls to use. All the thought process at the moment is around how the pink ball will work. Dew will be a big factor for the spinners. A day and night test starting in the afternoon could mean no help for the fast / seam bowlers with the early morning moisture. Once you have negated spinners & fast bowlers, it becomes loaded heavily in favour of the batsmen i.e. 5 One-Day matches rather than 5 day matches.

This needs to be first trialled at FC level to see if they can even get a white ball that doesnt get discolored? Before you can do that all else is moot!

Ok - I am interested in hearing some reports on the experience. Some challenges are obviously clear: 1. Ball 2. Dew Factor 3. Visibility

Test cricket = :fail: regardless
I will try not to into a slanging match abt this ... but there is a format that appeals to everyone. As you can see from this board itself, there are those of us who mostly follow tests, some for whom ODIs are sacrosanct and a growing contingent who think 20/20 is cat's whiskers. ODIs will disappear in the near future. Tests will remain - perhaps in a more limited way between nations where in stadia and TV audiences still exist for it.

5 day tickets is a useless rule. If BCCI wants more people to follow test cricket they should most definitely schedule test matches over weekends. and allow people to buy 1 day tickets also. Make the whole package cheaper but there should be an option for people to buy 1 days ticket as well.. For eg. if whole test match is Rs 200, 1 day ticket prices should be Rs 60 or 70.
