The word is that Lalit Modi’s extravagance is a retaliation for all the years when he was looked down upon by other families in their social circle. “It was in his nature to be loud, but he never got a chance,” a source said. “The only problem is that overdoing things has got him in trouble now.”

Lalit Modi is no saint..but... When your ambition and abilities are not met with commensurate opportunities - you boil and boil. Then, when you get that chance and succeed more than all those who looked down upon you. You feel like saying FYOU.

His family was very wealthy but the article does not specify that LKM was very well off on his own. He seems to have been supported by the maintenance money (which could have been very substantial) by his father till the early 2000s. But it is also mentioned him buying his f-i-l's house in Juhu, details of money not specified. Till 2003 or so, "his own businesses failed consistently" After 2003, his fortunes turned around, and the only ones that he owned from this point seems to be MEN and IPL.

KOLKATA: People came to know about the Indian Premier League in 2008, but Lalit Modi conceived it many years ago. The IPL commissioner floated the concept Indian Cricket League Ltd (ICL) in 1995, when the T20 concept was not the in-thing in cricket. What’s more, Modi floated seven city-based companies — ICL-Bombay, ICL-Delhi, ICL-Calcutta, ICL-Bangalore, ICL-Hyderabad, ICL-Madras and ICL-Gwalior — a model that was later picked up by corporates. When the IPL started, the only change in this model was replacing IPL-Gwalior with IPL-Rajasthan that is now in the thick of controversy. Modi’s company ICL is still alive, though the city-based companies wound up in 2007. The ICL in its latest director’s report states: ‘‘The company has not carried out any activity during the year. However, the company is examining different areas of sports for future activities.’’ ICL is one among the 22 companies of which Modi is director. Tax officials have questioned Modi about his intent in floating such a company. They’ve also got to know about ICL’s holding company, Home Communication Network Ltd, and scanned the credentials of the directors. The holding company has six directors other than Lalit Modi, namely K K Modi, Samir Modi, Sanjay Kumar Gupta, Deepa Palekar, Jagadish Kotian. The reason for scanning is to find out whether any of these persons has any link with the betting racket. The team in Kolkata is examining the papers and computer discs seized during search operations at CAB office at the Eden Gardens and some other places in the city. On Friday, the CAB sent the original contract between the CAB and Knight Riders Sports over the holding of the IPL matches at the Eden Gardens. Revenue officials were keen on getting a copy of this document because they have come to know that some people watched the matches from the ‘‘super-hospitality block’’ as guests without apparently having valid tickets. Officials wonder how the CAB allowed such persons within the enclosure.

• which had a captive market (1 billion Indians) and millions abroad
• Marketing Agents with deep pockets (media companies) who were
• backed by cash rich corporates with deep pockets (Indian consumer product companies)

But most of all. . .

• support of the politicians
• a position of complete monopoly (competitors workers, managers, executives could be got banned by their own countries)

PLUS the acute awareness of how corrupt the system was AND the audacity to try and buy/threaten/deal with anyone and everyone without fear . . . mainly because of the protection provided by the system. Mr Modi and the IPL scenario are made for each other. No one else can manipulate the sytem better than this man nor can he run any other regular business (like a manufacturing company for example) with anything remotely like great success. Modi is no business genius. He was just the man for this particular job in this rotten system. When people talk of Modi the genius I am always reminded of the way people talked of Vijay Mallaya the genius. That too is a laughable claim. Take away the liquor business, which has most of the kind of advantages of IPL, and Vijay Mallaya is a disaster as a business man. But he too is on to a good product in IMFL and his breweries. It was his father who was a genius but of all the industries he left his only son (including some giants like Hoechst Pharmaceuticals) the prodigal son has only survived with the liqour business. Thats the only one which runs on its own while Mallaya junior indulges his other passions in life.

boss.. its very easy to say that everything fell in places for Modi.. and take away his achievements.. its an achivement -to move the whole tounament to south africa in just the 2nd year that too on a very short notice.. -to ban pak players with politics and to this day not many knows how it got accomplished -to derail ICL (not saying that it was good) -to make a hit in its very first year.. -to set the whole thing up in four to five months time in 2008..
