I dont have many videos but since I bought the flip sometime ago, Im saving more and more videos to the hard disk of my laptop. On Monday the motherboard of a laptop which I received only 4 months ago :fail:ed. I was lucky that it wasnt the hard disk. I have most pictures ( if not all ) on Picasa but the video files are large and if I upload them then I will have to buy more space :wall: So how do you guys save the pics and videos ? Is getting an external HDD the best option or is there anything else that I can do :nervous:

^ do they :fail: or are they pretty safe for long term storage .. ie 10-15 years ?
I brought a 100 GB external HDD in 2005 - still in good condition 200 GB "" 2007 - still in good condition 500 GB "" "" 2009 - still in good condition so i can vouch only for about 5 years..... 10 ~ 15 years no idea... but you coould transfer data every 5 years to a new HDD .... now we even have 1 terra byte HDD, in future who knows how many tera bytes may come.... On the internet there is no guarantee baba.... anything can happen to the files :nervous: I prefer my HDD's

No digital storage is entirely reliable. Server space is better if the data is that sensitive. Buy space with Google or yahoo or someone equally reliable. Always encrypt your data before uploading. External HDD is the way I go. But I always make sure to have two copies of all my important data. I use DVDs as the second option. I use Google docs basic for storing document type files. When I run out of space, I simply create another id.

Normally hard drives last for a average of 5 years...so this is not a good long term solution. This is a good strategy: 1. Your data on primary drive. 2. Primary drive is backed up to secondary drive (external or another internal hard drive) 3. Critical data is backed up to DVDs, sometimes twice. (Use Taiyo Yuden media - it has good archival quality). This is a must read: http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media 4. Also back up data to a offsite service (in case disaster strikes your home as in fire, theft, etc). I back up my data to a cloud storage service like Skydrive (by Microsoft) which offers 25GB of free space. You can create more accounts if you want more space. Remember all this is good only if you take the effort to do regular backups. Don't rely on only one backup solution if your data is important to you. Hard drives will fail, DVD media can go corrupt and online backup services can go out of business. Combine all three for a better backup strategy. After all this you will still have to make sure that your data is readable in the future :P Welcome to the world of information management :eyedance:

Thanks guys ! I post all pictures online so Im not too worried about those. As for the videos, I think I will keep them on my laptop and will also save them on an external HDD .. and also copy them onto a dvd and leave it at my parents in India on my next visit. I think that should be enough !

Any HDD with moving parts has limited life and how long it lasts depends on your luck ( or bad luck) ... so considering that ... SSD Drives are the next in-thing ..... they have no moving parts and will last forever ... as per manufacturers ... but you will have to pay thru your nose to get one and the max size is about 250GB ... Thumb drives are also pretty resilient ... mine has gone thru a washer and drier twice .. and still is as good as it was on day one :P
ssd drives are just too expensive mate and they degrade preety fast even with the trim feature and other stuff hdd are slow but they worth if u have the patience to wait couple of seconds...

Its not about the access time .. its about the life span of the drive.
well in that case ssd does last longer but they degrade very fast ie. 200MB write becomes 100MB atfer couple of months mate so hardrive for the win

current times, external harddisk is the best technology evolves all the time - 5 1/2 floppy disk, 1.44 Mb floppy disk, capacity harddisks, CD, DVD/Blue Rays, USB drives, portable drives Maybe in 5 yrs time, it will be possible to store 1000 TB in a 1 inch device
