Saurav Ganguly and law of Omerta

It is quite possible that you have not heard of Jimmy Hoffa. It is perhaps even more possible that you have not heard of Frank "Irishman" Sheeran. Jimmy Hoffa was one of the most famous men in USA from 50's to 70's. To understand Hoffa you would have to understand the America of 50's. A country trying to find its feet after the World War. Economy was booming but ordinary workers lived a life without too much benefits (much of the 401 K, health benefits of today can be traced back to that era). Soldiers would come back from bloody war, their lives changed forever only to realize that those who did not go to war occupied the coveted positions when it came to jobs and they had nothing. In such a time Jimmy Hoffa arose and his Union, Teamsters, was the most powerful in the country. A born fighter he was quick to realize the importance of mafia in his scheme of things and with their help(or muscle if you will) became what his nemesis Bobby Kennedy would call, "Most powerful man in USA". Indeed once peeved at a hard-hitting question by a Senator hearing Hoffa is reputed to have told him, "The food that you place at the dinner table from a family comes due to a trucker". What was left unsaid was if he wanted he could start a strike of truckers and no food would be placed on the table for families. Ganguly was never the best player in Indian team. Even his greatest fans would not put him ahead of the likes of Sachin, Dravid, Kumble or even Srinath. But when Ganguly was the captain he was the man that lead India. The other players, great as they were, were not allowed to become larger than life and in this Ganguly certainly bruised a few egos. Quite simply Ganguly ran a tight ship of which he was the captain. And to run it if he did not have support of senior crew members he would promote the youngers one fast. A brash young Harbhajan would be picked over Kumble, an aging Sreenath would retire and then unretire due to antics of his skipper. In the end Ganguly's efforts perhaps did more good than bad to India but it is also true that somewhere it made him lose his focus, make him forget about his batting, and instead work on his fiefdom that he considered to be - Indian cricket team. His faults were forgiven till India was doing well. No one cared when he failed as a batsman in Pakistan, simply because India won the Test and one day series there for the first time. People did not care that his batting average of 17 was the worst of any Indian batsman when India overcame the might Aussies in that greatest of all Test series in 2001. But once India started failing jury was out. Ganguly had to go. Only he didnt realize it. What happened afterwards is well-known. Today Ganguly is back in the team. It remains to be seen if he would be satisfied with being a mere player in this aging team of superstars. Knowing Ganguly I have a feeling that it may not. I doubt his motivation is to achieve anything now. Score runs, win test matches, have your name in record books, he has done it all. But maybe, just maybe, there is a thought that this is his team and that he needs to regain his foothold again. If that happens we shall see if Ganguly does a Hoffa again....and if he does then who is going to be his Frank Sheeran.

Re: Saurav Ganguly and law of Omerta Great post. The hoffa factor is the main reason I was never his "fan". He rode on the work of others. The 01 series decider where he scored a grand 4 runs in the 2nd followed by feverish nail biting in the pavilion while Dighe and Harbhajan saw us through - kind of epitomizes his test career, IMO.

His faults were forgiven till India was doing well. No one cared when he failed as a batsman in Pakistan, simply because India won the Test and one day series there for the first time.
