Sharjah Cup Do u remember the excitement & passion of the ODI s played in Sharjah ? The Sharjah Stadium was opened in the early 1980s It has hosted 200 ODIs from 1984 to 2002. It has a great importance in the history of cricket – It was the ground where Sachin scored 143* vs Aussies braving the sandstorm.It was a landmark innings of his career & he became a megastar after this & the next innings of 134 to give India the Cup on his birthday. Javed Miandad scored a last ball six of Chetan Sharma to give Pakistan the Cup on this very ground. Shoaib Akhtar became a superstar after the India-Pak-England Tri series at Sharjah. Kapil Dev's India beat Pakistan after getting all out for just 125. All those matches played here were housefull & mega-hits and were watched by TV viewers all over. So why not should we relaunch it ? We should organize at least 4 tournamets every year let them be – India Australia Pakistan India England Pakistan Pakistan Sri Lanka West Indies/South Africa These 3 tri-serieses of 7 ODIs/Pro35 each. And a quadrangular tournament – Bangladesh Zimbabwe UAE New Zealand 13 matches. Thus a total of 34 matches per year. The Sharjah Stadium has a capacity of 28,000 with floodlights. Before the money generated from the matches here used to go to the Players Benefit Fund now it will go to development of cricket in associate nations. The Sharjah Cup was closed because of match fixing but it can be restarted now without any such things as the players have abundant money.

Sharjah was closed because of match fixing. Not just isolated incidents, but persistent rumors of match fixing. No points for guessing which team was neck deep in it as they are now.

Sharjah is done and should never be re-opened as an issue. It wasn't really spreading cricket in the region either. Apart from persistent match fixing issues, the organizers were also not so strict about letting criminals in (i heard that the famous D company is very active in matches played there). Besides, Since no test country board will officially gets to host it, it is basically no benefit for the cricket boards either. They get more money and rights by hosting it themselves. PCB will do well to make it their home ground and building a base out there to get supporters and spectators. Even merge with Sharjah board to train their cricketers and organize games with them to develop the game in that region.

no, indian cricket dont need sharjah now those were times when indian ex-players/administrators use to line in front of bukhatir for his 50KUS$ bakshish fund, the likes of whos-whos of past cricketers use to lineup in front of his majesty times have changed now, modi can invite 100 bukhatirs now :-) now the only bhikharis now i can see lined up in front of bukhatir is PCB

If you want to complain about something, then complain about the lack of multi-team tournaments outside ICC tournaments which comes with a large dose of minnows. How about that Hero cup? or that Australasia cup? Or that world series?

i said about the world series but Sharjah Cup will be history revived instead of the present stupid 7 odi serieses

I asked you why Sharjah as a hosting ground? Apart from nostalgia, it provides nothing that cannot be done in any other place. A quad series with India, Australia, South Africa and England in any of the 4 countries would be much better than the T20 WC.

It really makes no sense for India or Aus to play in Sharjah. What you said only holds true to pak and that too only if it is against a good team and even pak wouldnt have any problem filling up the ground for a ODI against Ind or Aus.

the VB series ran in empty stadiums ind-aus-srilnk and had very low TRP s that it had to be scrapped and it s better to play a 3 ODI series at home with the visiting teams than a 4 Nations as there wouldnt be any crowd for the neutral matches

if neutral teams like SA-WI play at neiutral ground like Sharjah, there will bill lots of crowds and high trp ratings. I think the boy has got a point.
