More whinging from Aussie media about BCCI

Just days after playing a central role in rejecting John Howard as president-elect of the International Cricket Council by helping to destroy the ICC's electoral system, the BCCI is in dispute with the Indian Olympic Association. The IOA is furious that the BCCI has scheduled a tour by Australia in October that clashes with the Delhi Games, the biggest sporting event to be hosted by India. The IOA has asked the Indian government to order the cricket tour be rescheduled to avoid a clash of dates, although none of Australia's matches is in Delhi. Given the cluttered cricketing calendar, this is highly unlikely. Australia is due to play two Tests and three one-day internationals in India between October 2 and 24, overlapping with the Games, which take place from October 3 to 14. Suresh Kalmadi, who heads the IOA and the Delhi 2010 organising committee, wrote to the sports ministry asking the BCCI to postpone the tour. "I need not stress the importance of not having any international cricket in India during the Commonwealth Games," Kalmadi wrote to Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill. "Our preparations to ensure that we host a successful Games are on home stretch and we are confident of delivering the best Games ever. I write to seek your good offices to try and convince the BCCI to reschedule the tour." Commonwealth Games Federation executive director Mike Hooper has backed Kalmadi's position, saying it was "clearly disappointing" that the BCCI had scheduled a tour in opposition to the Games . "Like Mr Kalmadi, we believe the spotlight should be on the Commonwealth Games in Delhi at that time," Hooper said. "The timing is unfortunate because the Indian government has invested substantial sums (estimated at $2.5 billion) in the games. We hope the BCCI will reconsider." BCCI president Shashank Manohar, one of the men responsible for denying Australia and New Zealand its joint ICC nomination of Howard, dismissed Kalmadi's complaint. "It's an internal matter between Mr Kalmadi and the Sports Minister. The BCCI has not received any communication, so why should we respond," said Manohar. Cricket legend Kapil Dev, a Commonwealth Games ambassador, also urged the BCCI to reconsider. "Commonwealth Games are undoubtedly a prestigious event for the country and I hope the BCCI and the government of India would sort out this issue of schedule at the earliest," he said. Cricket Australia claimed it was a matter for the BCCI to assess domestic issues. Hooper said he was not surprised by the BCCI's attitude given its response to overtures to have one of cricket's short-forms included in the Games. "The Delhi organising committee wanted to include cricket, we supported it and the ICC endorsed it but then it effectively handed the veto to the BCCI and they shot it down (in 2006). "The only public reason they gave was the cluttered calendar but it's not an argument that's sustainable if you consider the creation of the IPL since then. "It's disappointing that in a nation as cricket-mad as India that it's not on the program and there's no rhyme or reason for it."

Can't blame them to be honest, the common wealth games is the show piece event. This two test series, as much as I am looking forward to it, it was not a part of the original schedule (we play Aus every 4 years) and if anything, dilutes the rivalry of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

100 crores?Really? What i don't like about the whole affair is that how instead of concentrating and making Commenwealth games watchable, they want other sport boards to stop doing their job. If IOC cannot get people to watch their games without forcing cricket off the airwave, maybe they shouldn't be hosting it. They should be concentrating on the ground level to make athletics and other sports better in India instead of wasting the money on hosting the games. The whole article has a condescending tone on how BCCI is screwing up everyone.

I think the Australian media chose to forget that it is THEIR team that is touring us and that for THEIR convenience, the BCCI didn't the push the dates much and just tweaked it by extending a day's break between each test. (Fresh news)

Just remember, questioning or criticizing BCCI doesnt mean criticizing India. BCCI is not India. We criticize BCCI all the time.Let the media do it too if they have reasons.
