Another attraction of the ICM is that Vishwanathan Anand is going to play chess games with 40 mathematicians simultaneously. By the way, I am disappointed that the ICM has received zero coverage in the Indian national media. Their priority seems to be Deepika Padukone's new movie. Sad.

Elon Lindenstrauss ..just looked him up and he works in dynamical systems :woot: Ergodic theory and dynamical systems is my source of daily bread
Hmm.. looks like he has proceeded to popularize your area in his own unique way:
... The ICM said Lindenstrauss was chosen for his work in ergodic theory. Recognizing its obscure nature, the mathematician told Israel Radio, "I will be very surprised if people will find a use for it in the foreseeable future." http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gn2L5nT-mt3tRLRGfra94CzTpIHQD9HML7O00

A photo of the prize winners with the dignitaries. 20TH_LEAD_165727f.jpg Nice to see Prof Dan Spielman who won the Nevanlinna Prize for his work on smoothed analysis and graph algorithms. Prof. Nirenberg gives half his prize money to Courant Institute where he was a faculty all his career: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Hyderabad/article582664.ece . Such a shame that there is not even a mention of this event on ToI, NDTV, IBN etc.

cant, semester starts in two days, besides it would have been a barrage of intellectual bouncers. did you attend?

you are a bit of an engima seedhi. much like the erstwhile dada rocks. its rather obvious that you are quite well read, yet you and him had such stagnant views with regards to religion and state. i would have imagined you would be quite progressive after accumulating all that knowledge. not intended as a call to arms, just a curious observation.

Lets just say that if everyone had the same views this world would be a lot less interesting. Anyway, back to the ICM : I am not attending, most of it (except theoretical CS) would be beyond my expertise as well. I wish that somewhere there is a live stream of the match of Vishwanathan Anand with 40 mathematicians simultaneously on August 24. Tim Gowers is blogging about his experience at the ICM http://gowers.wordpress.com/ .
