I am not fussy with any diets. I can consume any diet. I don't cook and that's the problem. My job doesn't allow me to spend that much time in the kitchen. Also, I am not averse to have anything other than Indian meals. I am in Singapore for the next 6 months and if there's any particular thing you would know of please do tell me. Thanks for the advice. :two_thumbs_up:

lurker, akshay, VVS & others- what are your views on 1) thermogenics and 2) pre-workout stimulants. Are they effective at all and are the effects worth it (i.e. without side effects)??

One can clog arteries by avoiding all the fat and taking lots of sugars/simple-carbs. I may be wrong in this one - but a if you are in shape ( no extra fat around waist), and cardiovascular-active - then most likely your arteries are fine - unless your genetically predisposed to have high fat deposits in arteries. If he is not getting gaining weight, additional burger can certainly help up overall calories...not the cleanest way, but one can afford that at young age.

Are they effective at all and are the effects worth it (i.e. without side effects)??[/quote'] Ideally, you should not need any external stuff to 'push' you. But sometimes you do need a bit of extra push. I have used NOX/Nitrix for that extra pump/push for workouts - when I did not feel much motivated to push harder. In that aspect, those stuff did help. These work by increasing your BMR and allow you to push harder, but w/o proper workout/diet - even that wont get you anywhere. Every individual has different tolerance, response. If you feel like (and have money to spend), try it out.. just try not to get used to it.. for that .. take time off after completing a cycle and if you feel the urge of using it.. then perhaps its not good for you in the long term. In fact, you should not be thinking long term at all - if you must, just use it for that one season of bulking/cutting. Side-effects: I have not noticed anything...most part of the thermogenics comes from caffiene - so unless you have issues with caffiene - you should be fine. You only have to take care of dependency aspect... And yes, some people (esp who workout in evenings) might have trouble sleeping on time. (I am a later-nigher anyway). Ephedra, which was known to have side effects, is banned anyway.

Before you considering trying anything - read all the criticism you can ( and not promotional articles/reviews), and natural alternatives... and see whether you fall in any category of medical conditions/allergies etc. who might not gain or have serious side effects.

Are they effective at all and are the effects worth it (i.e. without side effects)??[/quote'] I enjoy using Pre-Workout drinks. By itself I doubt they produce any results but it will get you going in the gym and after that it really is upto you if you bust your chops in the gym, followed by good food and rest. So in that sense it is more of a trigger/catalyst than a game changer. My workouts are typically early mornings so PWOs gets me awake, alert and focussed. You do need to be careful on what is going inside your PWO to avoid being made a fool. If you can read labels and Nutritional value then you should be good. Here are a few things to ponder: a) Avoid using PWOs with lot of carb fillers. You can ensure this by reading the calorie content. Avoid buying any PWO with more than 40-50 cals per servings. If your prime goal is to lose weight then try picking one that has 0 cals per servings. b) Most PWOs have similar mix, the key ingredients that you should make sure are there are: BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids) Some form of NO precursor (Arginine based typically) Beta Alanine Citrulline Malate (one of my favs) Carinitine Betaine Anhydrous Creatine (not a big fan in using PWO, I tend to throw some Creatine in my post workout drink). Caffeine Green Tea What to avoid: Geranium PEA Yohimbine The three give me heart palpitation, something I am not a big fan of/ You can check some of the labels and they will give you a good idea. Also if you are unsure let us know, most of us have used different versions of PWOs and some are clear favorites.

It made me anxious, sweaty, mad for no reasons etc. Tried twice, gave up both times after using 1/4th bottle. Good old hard work in gym with short breaks and lots of water works better.

Load up on nuts, all kinds, and have a handful every few hours. Simplest and best methods to add weight, plus will get you good cholestrol. And if you dont eat much raw nuts, then possible side affects would be early morning wood. In which case you are welcome!

Thx guys- will give more specifics on names for pre-workout I am thinking of but as for themogenics thinking about Oxy-elite pro; lots of good reviews specially about no side effects. Just thinking of doing to for short cycle instead of any long term use- have to be careful about drinking lots of water + keep ingesting proteins. Lurker- I do dried raisins as snack (eat 2-3 badams in the morning & raisins during day as small snacks); hopefully they are not bad for u:nervous:

I have heard of Oxy Elite. UPS labs are one of the more reputed ones out there. Raisins are good. They give you good carbs with some fibre. However if you are looking to lose weight you may want to stop taking that for some time and switch it with almonds, macademia nuts, peanuts, pecans, walnuts etc. Raisin is one of the few dry fruits who are essentially carbs and not healthy fats.

ok- is that because of the sugar in raisins?? I am fine with nuts/raisins/anything- not really fussy. I switched form nuts to raisins just to lower sodium as per Dr's advice (for BP); maybe I should just go for unsalted nuts.

yeah it is the sugar. On second thoughts, if you have had BP issues probably a good idea to continue resins. Nuts will add to your cholestrol, and although cholestrol from nuts are good kind, probably a good idea to check with Doc to see what he recommends.

I suggested that to him considering his age and weight. Its not bad to load up right now to bulk up .Regular exercise will get him in good shape.

Yeah - actually if he eats right kind of burgers then its a good idea I only made the comment because sometimes ppl who start with these at this age are not able to control the addiction in middle age when we all know what happens to the belly!!!

Yeah- thats why i switched; BP is not that bad- borderline so Dr. said staying away from certain foods will avoid medications so preferred. plus raisins i find yummy :-)

I started off the same way and looked really bulked up after exercising. Now I am struggling to put on muscle. Thinking about going back to milkshakes and an odd cheeseburger once or twice a week now

Cholestrol - Shouldn't it be bad for health?

Nuts are good- cholesterol at your age should not be an issue unless you are really unhealthy; just get the levels checked every 6 months or so. Cholestrol is 2 types anyway; only LDL is bad for you Soy (Veggie) and turkey burgers are healthy (proteins); I still will not recommend cheese burgers as per Yoda's advice. You should be able to get these in Singapore Nuts + these healthy burgers are way to go IMO. Regarding ice cream- this option is getting healthier by the day as low-fat yoghurts and ice creams are taking over; intact I had a yummy protein rich (has carbs though) 0 fat ice cream from Muscle maker grill the other day (downside- its expensive :(()

Saturated fat/cholesterol is important for natural production of one of the most important 'man' hormone - also key for muscle gain....and that would be - Testosterone. Too much (of anything) is bad, but avoiding saturated fat completely may not be good either. Every person's body behaves differently. Instead of guesswork, best is do regular checks.. esp if you make significant changes in your diet. ( esp. lot more carbs, or lot more fats). As I said, you can avoid all types of fat, and still can end up having high cholesterol...simple carbs are the key culprits.. ( and poison when taken with fatty stuff). Nuts are good, esp walnuts...just try to avoid having nuts ( or any form of fat), with simple carbs (soft drinks, sugars, rice , white bread..etc..), which invoke high Glycemic response. just fats+protein - is very healthy meal ( if you are not having simple carbs 1-2 hours either side of that meal). As for nuts vs burgers...remember what I suggested - you just have to introduce extra meals/calories in your day...it can come from burger ( nuts are better) or anything..as long as your weight is not increasing too rapidly.... I would experiment with all foods, (esp starting from your stage/age) , just keep monitoring weight (weekly) and other 'clinical' parameters (6-12 months..).... you wont change irreversibly in one-two months anyway.
