IPL retention rule contrived?

MUMBAI: Three of the 10 IPL franchises are not happy with the manner in which BCCI has devised the player-retention system. Further, two other franchises are still hopeful that the last word on the player retention issue - the rule where four players and a maximum of three Indians can be retained - hasn’t been said. "We simply don’t understand this. When the rules were explained to us in 2008, we were specifically told that after the first three years, there’ll be fresh player auctions all over again. Then what was the need to change it?" a team owner told TOI a day after the IPL governing council’s released the new framework. Another owner said, "if you look at these changes carefully, they’ve been brought about only to support two teams - Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Chennai don’t want to lose (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni and Mumbai don’t want to lose (Sachin) Tendulkar at any cost." A third says, "First, it was seven - three foreigners and four Indians. Now, it’s four. Basically, franchises in favour of player retention knew very well that the figure would come down, so they started with seven. "I don’t even know if the four-player rule needs to be in place. It won’t be a surprise if the number comes down further. Just one player per team would do if you allow Chennai to retain Dhoni and Mumbai to retain Tendulkar. Then the whole player-retention theory becomes redundant."

Good that MI are in the mix, or else another chance to claim a CSK fix :hehe: Regarding the OP, it is good to allow right of first refusal to a franchise's key players. Also remember, IPL makes rules as it goes along, so for some franchises who claim this retention wasn't there in the first place should know that is biziness as usual with our folkz.

Obviously, the losers will harp on about everything. What is the point of supporting CSK or MI if most of the players you support this year in CL will be in the opposing team in 6 months? I came out with a perfect idea for player retention which would easily be agreed upon by everyone involved, but the big suits cant even come out with that basic idea!

BCCI's reply might be - "We have no idea what Mr.Modi explained to you. You better ask him about it."
