How True is this?? New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is exploring the possibility of replacing Pakistan with Sri Lanka during their forthcoming summer in 2010-11. At present as the current international schedule stands Pakistan are due to make a tour of New Zealand from December to February and the tour itinerary includes two Tests, 6 One-Day Internationals and 3 Twenty20 Internationals. However sources from New Zealand indicates that some members of NZC are not happy to have Pakistan making a tour of their country on the light of what has happened in England. Three Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and captain Salman Butt were provisionally suspended by the ICC last Thursday and also quizzed by police for their alleged role in bowling deliberate no-balls during the fourth Test at Lord’s between England and Pakistan. The tainted trio was sent home from the tour. Apparently New Zealand does not want a scandal of that nature to mar their season which is crucial for their preparations for the 2011 World Cup which takes place in the subcontinent from February-April. There is also the fear that the spectators may lose interest and not attend the matches because it is Pakistan who is playing and the seriousness of the matches they play cannot be guaranteed. The Nation learns that NZC have asked their chief executive Justin Vaughan to tap Sri Lanka for a tour instead and a request to that effect has been made to Sri Lanka Cricket. NZC are awaiting a response. SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga was not available for any confirmation yesterday. NZC are keen to get a team from the subcontinent because they can draw the crowds. At the same time Sri Lanka is the only Asian country free of any international commitments during that period as India will be touring South Africa. Sri Lanka last toured New Zealand in December 2006-07 when they drew all three series - the two-Tests 1-all, the 5 ODIs 2-all and the 2 Twenty20 Internationals 1-all.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan dismissed a British newspaper report that sports chiefs were considering scrapping the Pakistan tour and seeking the West Indies or Sri Lanka as replacements. Vaughan said the Pakistan trip was locked in under the International Cricket Council's (ICC's) Future Tours Program and would go ahead as planned. "You can't just do that (change opponents) the way the Future Tours Programme is structured," he told the New Zealand Herald. "It's not a process where you can say 'we'd rather have someone else'. It doesn't work that way." Pakistan are due in New Zealand late December for an 11-match tour that runs until early February. Vaughan admitted he was concerned about how New Zealand fans would view the Pakistan team and the level of interest in watching a contest where one side was under a cloud following corruption allegations. However, he said research showed the main motivation for New Zealand fans was seeing their home team in action, regardless of the opposition. "These recent reports (from Britain) haven't done us any favours," he said. New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori this month called for corrupt players to be banned for life, saying otherwise crowds would question every result, even if it was legitimate. Pakistan's England tour has been plagued by corruption allegations since the News of the World reported that spot-fixing took place in last month's fourth Test at Lord's. The ICC has suspended three Pakistan players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif while the allegations are investigated.
