Colombo: If you act and behave like a cheat and get caught, expect to face tough punitive action as a result. Now word coming out of London these days over match-fixing style allegations is not what the trio of Pakistan players, banned by the International Cricket Council, want to hear. And the man who acted as their fixer and so-called 'agent' Mazhar Majeed, is in reality a little better a bookie hiding behind claims of ownership of what is now seen as a cheap sleazy soccer club. If he is found guilty of irregular currency and money laundering charges, Majeed can expect a lengthy stretch in prison and the possible loss of certain rights when freed. Scotland Yard are expected to ask for the return of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir to face charges. There are new claims being investigated by the ICC that a senior (as yet unnamed) Pakistan player and bookies in Dubai and New Delhi colluded in spot-fixing manipulations during the third ODI with England at The Oval on Friday and which Pakistan won. Although the result itself is not in doubt, it does leave a number of questions after it became known that certain batting patterns during the Pakistan innings showed just how spot fixing can be used to appear legitimate, yet used by bookies it can make millions when bets are taken. In part this did influence certain parts of the how the game was played by Pakistan. Ball tampering has not been ruled out either in this latest case. Wahab Riaz, now a new name being probed and linked with the Tests at The Oval and Lord's last month, was questioned under caution by Scotland Yard. It is after Scotland Yard handed their initial findings into the probe to the Crown Prosecuting Service, that fresh claims of how illegal bookies, thought certain Asian agents, have been able to infiltrate the game and The Oval game is merely one example. It is now up to the CPS to decide whether Scotland Yard's initial investigation has unearthed enough evidence to press charges. With the police investigation into the cricketers, now appearing at an end it will allow the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to pursue their own case. They have so far not issued a comment and Colin Gibson, the ICC’s media and communications manager has confirmed that Wahab Riaz is not as yet under suspension on similar charges to those of Salman Butt, Asif and Amir. There has been though a major change in attitude of Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan Cricket Board whose buffoon-like behaviour at the start claimed there was no proof of the charges to that of the Pakistan High Commissioner in London, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, claiming it to be a conspiracy. Now he is playing a different tune by claiming the PCB had not explained how match-fixing details worked. How interesting is this turn of events. All this took place about the time Ijaz Butt was due to meet Sharad Pawar, the ICC president this week. Face to face, Butt was told some harsh facts, some of them are what the British Police had uncovered during their investigations into the various charges spot-fixing and what has been learn through the initial interrogation of Majeed, organiser of the duplicitous scam and the three players. From this, Ijaz Butt dropped his nefarious act of saying 'my boys are not guilty’ and ‘the ICC acted in haste in their suspending of the three (players)' to one of how 'the PCB will not appeal for leniency for the 18-year-old Amir'. All this suggests that Pawar, armed with updated information of the case and how the police investigation proved collusion by the players in spot-fixing, told Ijaz Butt to stop behaving the way he has been. In this, his Luddite approach has brought the game into disrepute. Once the full shady, corrupt actions are revealed, Pakistan are going to find it hard to attract tours and sponsors and not even life bans will be enough. The players involved could also face imprisonment in Pakistan and it is a pity that the scammer, Majeed, can’t be deported to spend a lifetime in jail with them. Trevor Chesterfield Cricketnext.com

Scotland yard should have retained the players when they still had the chance. Letting them off and then calling them back to face charges is stupid. Now the players will refuse to come back and the diplomats will be out on their behalf.

Tar their faces and tie them to a pole in every stadium wherever Paki team plays for next five years....and also life bans on all three plus the remaining 4 and the rest of the fixers in the Pakistani team....

2 year ban for Aamer 5 year ban for Butt Life ban for Asif Suspend Pak membership unless they sort things out. Like ICC did to Zim. But I doubt it's gonna happen.
