On my desktop, from pressing 'Enter' in the boot option menu, to reaching a usable desktop screen took a jaw-dropping 7 seconds! And after pressing Shutdown, my machine's fan's will be off in under 4 seconds. All this using the beta version only. Think about it, especially when you are staring for half a minute at an animated Windows logo. 2. Price .I still haven't met anyone who actually bought a copy of Windows 7, yet. and i know you've all had a bad day the day u tried to activate Windows.if you are the kind that gets "Is your windows Genuine?" nightmares, there's really no contest here, because Ubuntu is free. Pure and simple 3. No Commitment-Try it with a LiveCD, Live USB, Wubi or virtualization--all of which play completely safe. The new live version boots much faster, and is almost as fast as hard disk installation In other words, you have nothing to lose.Besides,in case of a horrible virus attack, pop in a live USB drive, and soon you'll be on a working system that detects all your hardware, and can even get you on the web, at the drop of a hat. Speaking of Virus, 4. Absolutely no Viruses. Suppose you have an infected USB pen drive. So infected, its owner's afraid to touch it.Plug it into your linux system,mount it, and you can actually see the files that constitute the virus program.Nothing happens. Copy it to your desktop if you please. Maybe even try to open the virus in a text editor and get an encoding error .The Greatest Pleasure, IMHO. (And with the kind of paranoid protective measures inherited from UNIX, i doubt linux will ever have viruses.) 5. Hardware Compatibility:The newer the versions get, the better its compatibility seems to become. Ubuntu will play well on just about any machine you might have sitting around.And unlike Windows 7, this goes the other way too. I tried it on an ageing 2004 laptop with 256MB RAM, and it worked F-I-N-E 6. Its Beautiful : With every version, Ubuntu starts to look more like Mac OS. Streamlined, clear, and god-beautiful. And if you install Compiz Fusion, you get a bunch of desktop effects that can make you go, "OMG!!", and your girlfriend go "Oooo.. so cuteeeeeeee!!" 7. Lots of Applications: The standard install is carefully selected mix of apps for speed and functionality.But the Ubuntu repository has a HUGE collection(31,000+ in my list right now) of applications, all free, and for every purpose you can imagine, from satellite tracking apps to Nintendo Gameboy Emulators. 8. Ubuntu Software Center: If you thought installing new software with the command line or synaptic was a pain in the a**, the Software Center has beautiful, intuitive interface, with software categorised beautifully, and installable or removable at the click of a button. Generallly Idiot-proof. Easier than Windows, actually. 9. Stable as the Ayers Rock: In the two years that i have continously used Ubuntu, it has NEVER crashed.The only time the system hanged was once,for about two minutes when i was trying out an unstable beta build of Firefox.Them i calmly killed the process and got on with my life. 10. Ubuntu One-Ubuntu One is the personal cloud service that lets you synchronize your files and notes and then access them from anywhere. You can also consolidate your computer and mobile phone contacts and share documents and pictures with them. On the fun side, you can use Ubuntu One to buy music and get it delivered to the computers of your choice. 11. Windows Compatibility like Never before: With Ubuntu 10.10, a beta client for Windows also allows users to integrate their Windows and Ubuntu worlds by accessing files from either platform. You'll never have to worry about being unable to get at your Windows files. 12. The GEEK factor : Its Linux dammit. If you dont get it, just trying using your Ubuntu laptop in a public place. The boot screen, the startup music, the theme and colors, the desktop effects, the completely different set of applications for everything.. some people stare at the thing, discreetly. and you think, "Bow to me, lowly Windows User, BOW!!"

Sometimes WUBI just goes crazy and gets the wrong version. You could just download the relevant ISO yourself and put it in the same folder as WUBI. This would force WUBI to use the ISO in the folder (and not download a new one..)

thevortex Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Guys - I know Ubuntu is wildly popular. But if you have a chance, do try out Linux Mint or one of its variants Peppermint. They are definitely more user friendly and in my opinion have taken Ubuntu to another level. Oh and both of these are basically spin-offs from Ubuntu. so you wont miss much.

It is nothing but Ubuntu - just packaged well and made a little bit more intuitive. However, just try the different live CDs out there without installing. That should tell you which one is for you.
