Idol of Lord Hanuman unveiled The historic temple of Jakhu today became the site for the tallest idol of Lord Hanuman in the world at a height of 8,500 feet as the unveiling ceremony took place at the shrine in the presence of Chief Minister PK Dhumal and Abhishek Bachchan. Speaking on the occasion, PK Dhumal expressed gratitude to HC Nanda, chairman of the Nanda Trust, who have undertaken the stupendous task of raising the 108-foot tall Hanuman idol at the temple. “The Jakhu temple is a famous shrine where devotees make a beeline but now there is another attraction in the form of the tallest Hanuman idol in the world,” he said. Dhumal said there was a lot of scope for heritage and temple tourism in Himachal, which was known as Dev Bhoomi. He said not only was Shimla famous for having remained the erstwhile summer capital of the British, but it also had a lot of heritage and legacy that still remained intact. He added that even now many foreigners came here looking for the houses in which their forefathers lived during their stay here during the days of the Raj. “Our endeavour is to strengthen tourism infrastructure and attract more tourists and for this, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of Rs 454 crore to Himachal,” he said. A ropeway was being constructed to the Jakhu temple, which would be another attraction for the people. Harish Chander Nanda, chairman of the Nanda Trust, who conceived the idea of setting up the tallest idol of Hanuman at the shrine, said it was the unflinching faith that his family had in the shrine for the last three decades which made them undertake the task. “If you have true faith in Lord Hanuman, all your wishes will be granted and obstacles removed, such is his might,” said Nanda, who was here with his entire family and relatives. The entire expenditure for the project has been borne by the trust of JHS Svendgaard Laboratories. Highlights The 108 feet idol has been set up at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore. l The work started on Hanuman Jayanti on October 26, 2008. l The idol has been made by Naresh Kumar, hailing from a family of sculptors from Pilani in Rajasthan who engaged 40 workers. l The biggest challenge he faced was the cold and the monkeys who would often run away with the tools being used by workers. l Naresh is now working on a 108 feet idol of Goddess Durga being made by the Mangal Mahadev Trust in Mauritius. l Both Bachchan siblings, Abhishek and Shweta, were mobbed by fans, mostly girls, for autographs and the police had a tough time controlling the anxious crowd. :two_thumbs_up:

Women safety to be employer’s job Cabinet okays Bill to bar sexual harassment at workplace Thirteen years after the Supreme Court delivered the Vishakha judgment detailing guidelines for the protection of women at workplaces, the Union Cabinet today approved the Protection of Women Against Sexual Harassment at Workplace Bill 2010 for introduction in the Parliament’s forthcoming session. The Bill will by law make “safety” the responsibility of the employer and mandate that employers set up internal complaint committees to provide redressal to aggrieved women and transfer them or grant them leave pending the inquiry into a complaint. Contravention of the provision would invite a fine of Rs 50,000 and twice the punishment with each subsequent offence of a similar nature. The employer may even lose his licence/registration. The draft law is significant as it makes SC directives on workplace safety legally binding for the first time since the court following Bhanwari Devi’s gang-rape in Rajasthan (a saathin who opposed child marriage in her village) laid down safety guidelines for working women. The Bill prohibits sexual harassment in public, private, organised and unorganised sectors and defines sexual harassment as required by the SC. Sexual harassment means such unwelcome sexually determined behaviour (whether directly or by implication) as physical contact and advances, demand or request for sexual favours, sexually coloured remarks or showing pornography or any other unwelcome physical; verbal or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature. Everyone -- women clients, customers, apprentices, daily wagers, college student, hospital patients, ad-hoc or otherwise -- will be covered. For redressal, the Bill mandates employers to set up internal complaints committees. Since India has 41.2 million establishments (with less than 10 workers) as per Economic Census 2005, the law allows local complaints committee to be constituted by district officer at district or sub-district levels. A woman can complain to any committee. Employers’ duties would include -- ensuring safety; displaying at a conspicuous place the order constituting the internal committee, assisting the woman if she files a complaint under IPC, initiating action under IPC against the perpetrator after the conclusion of the inquiry or without waiting for the enquiry where the perpetrator is not an employee where the sexual harassment took place. The committee must submit its report in 90 days and employers or district officers must act on its recommendations in 60 days.

Son joins his martyr father’s regiment today Ravail Singh and his son ® Bakhtawar nation6.jpgnation7.jpg Taking the family tradition of joining armed forces ahead, this second-generation braveheart son of a Kargil martyr is all set to follow in the footsteps of his father. The young boy will don the olive green and join the Sikh Regimental Centre, Ramgarh Cantt, Jharkhand, tomorrow. Ravail Singh and his son ® Bakhtawar Ravail Singh and his son ® Bakhtawar Bakhtawar Singh (21), son of Kargil martyr Naib Subedar Ravail Singh, will join the prestigious 8 Sikh Regiment as a sepoy. His father served in this regiment when he died during Operation Vijay in Kargil. He was awarded the Sena Medal posthumously. Talking to TNS, Bakhtawar said November 8 would be one of the most memorable days of his life. “Nothing can be as honourable as joining armed forces. And for me, it is all the more special as I am joining the Sikh Regimental Centre where my father took his first lessons in the Army. It is a real tribute to him,” he added. The family celebrated their son’s recruitment in the Army as a grand affair along with the Divali celebrations in Jammu. Second among the three brothers, Bakhtawar nurtured the dream of joining the Army since he was a child. “I was studying in Class II at Pathankot when my father was killed during the Kargil war. The memories of that day still make me feel cry. But my father’s regiment stood with us in our thick and thin and ensured that we don’t face any difficulty ever”, he added. Surinder Kaur, mother of Bakhtawar, said: “My joys knew no bounds when my son got selected in the Army. He will be a part of the same regiment where father spent his life as a soldier. We share a strange bond with this regiment and I am happy that the legacy has passed ahead”, she added. While many martyrs’ families prefer to stay away from joining the forces, this woman, however, said, “I faced the worst fear of my life when my husband died in the Kargil war. After that I developed a sense of belonging to the Army. Probably nothing can match the joy of see-ing a son as a ‘fauji’.” The Sikh Regimental Centre authorities have decided to impart free training and coaching to Bakhtawar to join the Army as a commissioned officer.

Aman’s killers get 4-year jail Judgment delivered speedily in ragging-death case at medical college near Dharamsala After a 15-month trial, a local court today sentenced to four-year rigorous imprisonment all four accused medical students in the infamous Aman Kachroo ragging and death case. Additional District and Sessions Judge (Kangra) Purinder Vaidya pronounced the judgment after convicting the accused under Section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Also, they were sentenced to three-month jail under Sections 352 (criminal trespassing) and 34 (common intention) and one month under 342 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC. All the sentences would, however, run concurrently. Besides, a fine of Rs 10,000 was slapped on the convicts — Abhinav Verma, Mukul Sharma, Navin Verma and Ajay Verma — failure to pay which would invite an additional imprisonment of six months. The charge under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC was, however, dropped due to the lack of evidence. The Judge said the ragging menace had to be dealt with sternly so that no such incidents were repeated. Notably, it was at 2 am on the intervening night of March 6/7 that the accused told all the first-year students to come out of their rooms at the hostel of Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital in Tanda. After telling the juniors to line up in the gallery, one of the four seniors slapped Aman on the left side of his face, it was learnt. Aman rushed back to his room, saying his left ear had started bleeding. But the seniors forced their way into the room and brought him back, this time hitting Aman on the right side. They apparently chose Aman first as the latter had already complained to the college authorities once about the seniors. he next day (March 7), Aman showed himself to an ENT doctor. He also filed a written complaint with the college principal against the four seniors. In the meantime, his father Rajinder Kachroo, too, called up the Himachal Pradesh Health Minister who, in turn, rang up the principal. An inquiry was initiated. At around 7 pm on the same day, Aman reportedly went into a shock at the hostel. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead at about 7:20 pm. It was Aman’s complaint against the four accused that later served as the basis for the case. During the arguments today, prosecution counsel demanded that the convicts be given the maximum 10-year punishment, as permissible under the sections they were convicted, saying the judgment should act as a deterrent for the society against ragging. The accused forced their entry into the victim’s room and beat him mercilessly also displayed their intention, the counsel argued. On the other hand, the defence counsels demanded probation for the three accused, including Abhinav Verma, Mukul Sharma and Navin Verma, on the plea that they were below 21 years of age when the crime was committed. They even quoted the e-mail of Aman’s father Rajinder Kachroo in which he said: “I feel the administration of Tanda medical college is more responsible for the death of his son rather than the four accused in the case.” For lowering the quantum of punishment, the defence even cited the “good conduct” of the trio in jail.

Reality TV under scanner after Rakhi’s ‘insaaf’ The death of a contestant, allegedly from acute depression after being called “impotent” by host Rakhi Sawant on her show ‘Rakhi ka Insaaf’, has put the spotlight on reality shows on Indian channels and the role of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in overseeing what is being dished out to unsuspecting viewers in the name of reality TV. While industry experts are of the opinion that provocative reality TV shows like ‘Rakhi ka Insaaf’ and ‘Bigg Boss’ that dig deep and make a public spectacle of people’s private lives need to be regulated, political parties want a complete ban on such shows. Demanding a ban on ‘Bigg Boss’ for organising the “fake wedding” of housemate and TV actor Sarah with Ali Merchant and “misleading people”, Congress MP Jagdambika Pal says shows like ‘Big Boss’ and ‘Rakhi ka Insaaf’ portray the country in “bad light”. “Sarah and Ali are already married and living together for over a year,” says Jagdambika Pal, adding that “a fake wedding is not acceptable and a case should be slapped against producers of the show for misleading the public just to hike their channel ratings”. He says he will give a notice to the Speaker to raise the matter of such “cheap and vulgar shows” in Zero Hour. BJP spokesman Prakash Javedekar, who terms reality shows as “far from reality”, also wants viewers to practice discretion while selecting serials to watch as a family. “We will also raise the issue in Parliament, but there is not much the government can do in this case. I think producers should behave responsibly and ask themselves what kind of India are they portraying to the world. My advice to people watching such shows is to avoid them completely. If people stop watching them, their TRP ratings will fall automatically and channels will stop producing them.” Media analyst Akhila Sivadas is clear that shows like 'Rakhi ka Insaaf' and even 'Emotional Atyachaar', which are highly intrusive in the name of being open about issues and breaking the silence, are extremely insensitive. The shows are more like kangaroo courts, sitting on a judgement over people who have no control to stop what is happening to them. "Unless reality shows are handled well and sensitively no one should indulge in them. Such programmes have to be handled with extreme maturity and sensitivity and cannot be dumbed down," she says. Meanwhile, Jagdambika Pal says he will also take up with Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Sonia why the content monitoring cell set up by her ministry to look into such issues was not taking action.

Now, get water filter at just Rs. 25 here are not many things that you can buy for Rs 25 these days but now you can now buy a water filtration media with which you can turn your tap or ground water into a glass of potable drinking water for the next five years. Watch out for an indigenously designed water filter this season at the Pragati Maidan trade fair costing Rs 25. The low-cost, highly efficient water filtration media for purification of impure turbid raw water into clean drinking water comes at a minimal cost, says the developer Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). While the cheapest water purifier available in the market will cost at least a couple of thousand rupees, the average unit cost of a 100-mm diametre Terafil disc fitted with food-grade plastic holder is within Rs 25, says the CSIR. The disc can produce a litre per hour potable water in a domestic filter with an operating life of about five years. A realistic assessment is yet to be made as the project is still at the pilot stage. The CSIR Director-General Samir Kumar Brahmachari said while Terafil would be certainly be at display, all attempts would be made to make available for sale some pieces of this most inexpensive possible water filter at the CSIR pavilion. Terafil disc, a porous sintered red clay disc, which is used for filtration and treatment of raw water, exclusively for removal of turbid particles microorganisms, iron from raw water, improving pH balance, reducing colour and bad odour and producing clean drinking water, Both ground and surface raw water can be treated by Terafil. The rate of filtration increases manifold when it is used under pressure in a closed chamber. Terfail disc can also be fitted with any domestic container to make a water filter, therefore poorest of poor can afford a Terafil water filter. Cost of product water is below Rs 2 per tonne, considering the total cost of Terafil filter or plant.
