Four IIT-Delhi students killed in accident in Jaisalmer

Four IIT-Delhi final-year students, who were on a road trip to west Rajasthan to celebrate their placements, were killed and two other students injured when the Innova they were travelling in overturned near Jaisalmer on Sunday morning. The students were returning after camping out at Sam and were 5km from Jaisalmer when one of the tyres burst, resulting in the vehicle rolling over several times. While three students died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The Innova driver and two students — a girl and a boy — were being treated at MDM hospital in Jodhpur and were reported to be stable. The deceased have been identified as Pallav Aggarwal from Chattisgarh, Bihar resident Archana Mandal, Diksha Gautam from Delhi and Mayank Goel. "The six were travelling in an Innova hired from a travel agency. The driver could not control the vehicle after a tyre burst. Archana came from Gudiya Bakibaka in Bihar and Diksha from Yamuna Vihar in Delhi. Pallav hailed from Koria village in Chattisgarh's Mahendragarh district," said Kotwali police station in-charge Jetha Ram. The IIT Delhi campus was in shock and disbelief on Sunday evening, as students and teachers gathered on the campus to remember those who died. "All six students had been placed in good firms. They were very excited about it and wanted to celebrate. No one would have imagined it would turn out this way," said a friend of Archana, a student of electrical engineering. "Archana was a high-spirited and a very friendly girl. She used to represent IIT at inter-colleges sports meets. Archana and Diksha were room-mates. Diksha had been placed by Goldman Sachs and they were both very excited. Earlier, this month they had gone on a trip to Goa. I cannot believe that they are no more with us," the friend added. The two injured students are expected to be brought to the capital by Monday afternoon. The bodies are also likely to reach the campus by Monday afternoon. "We are ensuring that the bodies are brought here by Monday afternoon so that they can soon be handed over to the families, who have been informed about the accident. Most of them are on their way," said Rakesh Kumar, IIT registrar. With barely two months left for the dual degree holders to complete their course and most of them being placed already, this is usually a time for celebration for final-year students. On Sunday, the first floor of Kailash Hostel where two of the deceased girls' lived, wore a deserted look as most final-year students were out.

Train to Ernakulam lands in Gulbarga

Passengers of the Okha-Ernakulam express from Gujarat to Kerala were stunned when they saw that their train had reached Gulbarga station in Karnataka on Tuesday. It had been sent on the wrong route at Pune and landed at Gulbarga. The train was on track till 10.30pm on Monday but passengers were alerted at Punwale that due to an accident near Ratnagiri, the train would be diverted towards Pune and then it would reach Wadgaum in Goa via Miraj. But at Pune, the train was mistakenly diverted to Solapur and then to Gulbarga. Passengers were shocked early morning when they saw their train at Solapur station at 6am. They informed the station master at Solapur and were told the train would be diverted at Guntakal to Hubli. Keerthan, a passenger on the train who was supposed to reach Udupi at 11am Tuesday, got down at Gulbarga and took a bus to reach his destination. He said almost 30 passengers in the bus he was travelling, were passengers from the misrouted train. Another passenger Nagaraj said the situation was terrible in the train as there was not a single drop of water in all the toilets. "The train would stop outside the station at every place and we couldn't even buy bottled water," he said. Senior citizens and children had a tough time, he added. Nagaraj, an engineer in Surat, was headed to his home town Kundapur in Udupi district in Karnataka. Many North Indians were travelling in the train. At Gulbarga station, the train was stopped 1km from the station. Later, the train was taken to the station where the station master announced refund of the ticket. For tickets booked online, the refund amount will be credited to the passengers' accounts. The train reached Gulbarga at 11.30am and was parked 1km from the station and later taken to the station. The train was sent back to Pune and then to Wadgaum via Miraj. At 2.30pm, the train was sent back from Gulbarga to Pune.

Doctors find 12 gold biscuits in man’s gut

You could call him the man with a golden gut. Doctors operating on this 63-year-old businessman literally hit a goldmine, finding as many as 12 gold biscuits weighing a total of 396 grams inside his abdomen. The Chandni Chowk businessman had come to the private city hospital seeking surgery to remove a "foreign metal". His family claimed he had swallowed a water bottle cap in anger. The truth turned out to be a little more bizarre. The man had swallowed the gold biscuits, each weighing 33g, to smuggle them into the country from Singapore 10 days ago. This would be worth Rs 12 lakh in all. He even managed to elude security checks at airports. The plan, however, got 'stuck' as the man could not pass the bullion through his stool. He tried everything from drinking lots of fluid to using laxatives but the biscuits stayed in the small intestine, causing pain. Doctors who operated on the businessman said he did not eat anything for 10 days hoping the gold would come out. "When it did not, he came to us for surgery claiming that he had accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap," a doctor said. "I have been treating this patient since 1989, when he came for gall bladder removal. He is a wealthy man with a good business in Chandni Chowk and both his sons are settled abroad. It is both surprising and shocking to know that he could do something like this," said Dr C S Ramachandran, senior consulting surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram hospital. The businessman was admitted in the hospital on April 9. "It was a high-risk surgery because the patient had undergone operation four times in the past. We counselled him and finally got together a team of surgeons to get through the abdominal cavity to remove the foreign metal," said Dr Dhawal Sharma, another surgeon. He said two hours into the surgery, what they found left everyone in the operation theatre shell-shocked. "It was like digging into a gold mine. The biscuits were coming out one after the other," the doctor said. According to the doctors, they had to use handheld metal detectors to ascertain the exact position of the biscuits. "The body has a natural tendency to push them forward and it is important to know the position to take them out safely. Normally, we use repeat x-ray for the purpose but that is too tedious," said Dr Ramachandran. He said that the police and custom authorities were immediately informed about the incident and they seized the gold. The patient, he added, was discharged on April 15. A custom official, who did not want to identified, said usually the smugglers hide gold biscuits in the rectum area. "In the last six months, the smuggling of gold has gone up significantly," the official said.

Facebook date turns bloody: Man shoots woman, then kills self

A 22-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar shot dead his virtual girlfriend here who he met on Facebook after finding out she was actually a married middle-aged woman and attempted to commit suicide. He later died in hospital. Vineet Singh shot dead Jyoti Kori next to a picturesque setting of a waterfall on Friday after he found out that his virtual 21-year-old girlfriend was actually a 45-year-old mother of three from Jabalpur. The situation came to light a blood soaked Singh asked for help from people picnicking on the site. SP Jabalpur Harinarayanachari Mishra said the two were in touch for little less than three years. Singh was jobless and Jyoti Kori was apparently the bored housewife who regularly chatted on facebook. Jyoti's husband, a clerk in irrigation department, was too trusting and all three children including her 21-year-old eldest daughter had no clue what their mother was upto. It seemed like murder prompted by extreme hurt, frustration and anger, said Mishra. According to sources, Singh kept repeating that he was cheated by a married woman when he was brought to hospital. "She kept me in dark all along," he said. Jyoti had put up a picture of a cine actress as her profile picture so Singh had no means of knowing the truth. They finally fixed a date at marble rocks on Friday. Jyoti told her family she was off for two days to her mother's home and the boy told his parents he was going to Delhi in search of a job. The woman left home on Thursday went to her parental home but left early in the morning.

Blocking porn sites would cause greater harm, Centre tells Supreme Court

Blocking all websites with pornographic content in the country is not possible and it would cause more harm as literary content containing such words would also not be available for public on internet, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday. Appearing before a bench headed by Justice BS Chauhan, additional solicitor general KV Vishwanathan submitted that blocking all such websites would cause greater harm. "Everything would be blocked and even good literature would be blocked and it would cause more greater harm," he said. He submitted that a software has to be installed in every computer for blocking such websites and a direction has to be passed for all computer manufacturers to install software. The court was hearing a petition filed by Indore-based advocate Kamlesh Vaswani who pleaded that although watching obscene videos was not an offence, pornographic sites should be banned as they were one of the major causes behind crime against women. The petition filed through advocate Vijay Panjwani says that the absence of internet laws encourages people to watch porn videos and over 20 crore porn videos or clippings are freely available in the market, which have been directly downloaded from the internet or copied from video CDs. The petition states, "The sexual content that kids are accessing today is far more graphic, violent, brutal, deviant and destructive and has put entire society in danger and also poses threat to public order in India. "Most offences committed against women/girls/children are fuelled by pornography. The worrying issue is that the severity and gravity of such images is increasing. It is a matter of serious concern that prepubescent children are being raped," the petition added. The apex court had on November 18 issued notice to the department of telecommunication (DoT) seeking its response as to how to block websites with pornographic content in the country, particularly those featuring child pornography.

In death, 17-year-old gives gift of life to three

After losing her teenaged son in an accident, Bimal Prajapati from Panvel decided to give others a chance to live by donating his organs. On April 23, Satish Prajapati (17), who was awaiting his SSC exam results, was riding his friend's bike without a licence when he crashed into another vehicle. He suffered severe injuries on the head, chest and abdomen. Despite emergency surgeries at MGM Hospital in Vashi, he was declared brain dead a week later. "We are not well off. We run a pav bhaji stall in Panvel," said Bimal, a widow. "We wanted needy patients to benefit from my son's death. So, we decided to donate his organs. His death may have left a void in our lives, but brought happiness to others." Dr B K Archarya, consulting neurosurgeon at the hospital, said Satish's injuries were severe and despite their best efforts, he could not be saved. Once the family gave the nod, the organ transplant process was set in motion. "One of the kidneys was transplanted to a patient in MGM Hospital, the second to another in Jaslok Hospital, while the liver was donated to a patient at Jupiter Hospital in Thane," said zonal transplant coordination committee administrator, P K Sashanker. All recipients of the organs are reportedly doing well, he added. "The human organ transplant programme at the hospital was started four years ago, and since then we have conducted several liver and kidney transplants," said Dr Jayesh Dhabalia, consulting urologist. Originally from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, Satish is survived by his widowed mother and elder brother Ashish. They have been living with Bimal's brother Shivcharan in Panvel for the last three decades.

Lamborghini worth Rs 3 crore wrecked by hotel valet

A valet of a five-star city hotel virtually totaled a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder last week. The valet appeared to have lost control of the car while bringing it to the porch, rammed into a stationary car, pushed it aside and caromed into the concrete railing of the rampart. By the time the Lamborghini came to a halt after a resounding crash, the front of the Rs 3-crore plus supercar had caved in. The incident took place on July 3 at Le Meridian hotel. A hotel spokesperson said the incident was an error of the valet who also sustained injuries in the accident. The car (WBO-6J 444) belongs to one Abid Fateh Mohmmed Khatri who is in construction business. Khatri's friend, Nipun Mglani, who made the PCR call about the accident, said that Khatri was travelling abroad and his cousins had taken the car to the hotel. The Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder is no ordinary car. The sports car is Lamborghini's best-selling model with 14,022 custom built for customers desirous of its appeal. Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, the V-10 Gallardo has been Lamborghini's sales leader. "The car had been parked by valets a number of times before. Even that afternoon, the valet took the car to the parking safely and even brought it back to the porch area without any hassles," Nipun said. But suddenly he lost control, missed another valet by a whisker before hitting it head on into the railing. Gone in a few seconds According to Nipun's version and the CCTV footage of the incident accessed by TOI, the car took a turn at a slow speed and stopped at the porch around 2.30pm. A valet approached the car and the driver got out of the car briefly before getting back. Suddenly, the car zoomed ahead at a high speed and rammed into another sedan from behind even as a valet jumped to the side to escape. The impact of Lamborghini's collision with the other car was such that the car got pushed and took a U-turn and hit another parked car. Nipun said that the valet was identified as Arun Kumar. Kumar was later taken to the hospital where he was treated before being discharged the same day. The owners claimed the front portion of the Lamborghini was wrecked and it was taken to the workshop on Tuesday night for repairs. The cost of the repairs was around Rs 2 crore, they claimed. They added that initially the hotel promised compensation but later declined to do so. Nipun said a complaint was, therefore, filed against valet Arun Kumar and Le Meridien hotel with Parliament Street police station.
