He retired when at the the top. When he knew he could not do himself justice anymore. The guy did not even wait till the ashes was actually won back. He mises the next test on his home ground, when he would as selectors confirmed have been picked. What a selfless act. Look at the pathetic behaviour of many of our cricketers who cling to the team till they are literally thrown out. Gangs in particular comes to mind. Would you have seen Martyn use politics to keep his career going for another few years. Hell no! He knew he could not do it like he used to and instead of carrying on just retired.

Re: Learn form Martyn, Ganguly! Yea, I agree that players should know when to get out. But this retirement by Martyn in the middle of a test series is strange unless he has some serious personal reasons.

Re: Learn form Martyn, Ganguly! Its strange he did not wait till they had actually won the ashes. Perfect time to retire would be then. Just shows what a selfless act it was to retire when he thought he was not the same player anymore and could not do himself justice. Compare this to gangs and all the machevillian tatics he used to get back in the team in the last year. He is 34 and was out for ages and should have retired. No aussie would have behaved in such a manner. The team and country is nearly always paramount.

I'll give the credit to the guy's fighting spirit, who against all odds - coach, captain and some other senior players do not want him, makes it to the team and goes on to what he did yesterday in the middle. Aussies may have few worthy replacements for morten but considering current state of our team there is really no one in sight who can provide Ganguly's qualities.

Re: Learn form Martyn, Ganguly! Sachin has a dip in last few months. Although still averaging 40+ in odi's this year. He is class, don't compare him to Ganguly. Gangs was poor for about 3 years and quite frankly was never that great in his pomp. An average just creeping in to the 40's is testimony to that

Re: Learn form Martyn, Ganguly! How selfless. It's a sad day for cricket, but Martyn knew his time was running out as he was no longer at the top of his game. This is why Australia are such a damn good cricketing (and sports) nation. They set the standards so high for their athletes, that nothing less than a top class performance will do. Anything less isn't good enough. The players themselves realise this, take a holistic view of the situation and do what is best for the team. In India on the other hand, individual accomplishments take precedence ahead of team victories. Sachin scores a hunded, but India lose - it's all good. How many Indian cricketers have timed their retirement well ? Probably 2 or 3 i'd imagine ? Srinath left Test cricket at 33 - when he could have carried on for another 3 or 4 years. Maybe Sidhu ? But then again, he didn't leave on his own terms. Gavaskar ?

It is believed the real reason behind this sudden decision is an email from Buchanan to chief of selector. Also politicians from perth are going to take it up with Australian PM, who is expected to blame it all on current Indian coach greg chappell.
