Since Ponting has been captain, his average has been 51. Without captaincy it was 55. Sachin as captain averaged 51. Without it he averages 57. Perhaps he can revive himself, he certainly has the talent to do it. Also, I don't think it was selfish of him to keep going on as captain.. He could of left it at that and retired with all the success but he was brave enough to take on the challenge of captaining a weaker side, he burdened the responsibilty on his shoulders and for that he has my respect.

I won't be surprised if he starts doing well as a batsman. Captaincy can be very burdensome especially when things don't go your way. Now he can forget everything else and concentrate on batting.

Has any Aussie captain retained his place in the side after quitting captaincy? Looks like a lot will depend on what Clarke's view is. If at all Punter does retain his spot, he will probbaly move down the order to number 5/6.

He had to step down as captain, cos he is a terrible captain. Surely case of jumping before being pushed. Now his place is for grabs, as if he continues to play like he did over last 12 months he may well be axed as a player

Exactly, if they do make PUP the captain they are screwed. He is so tactically inept and naive that the Aussies will suffer their worst period in the last 20 years. The chota kutta is going to take them plummeting down the rankings in all forms of the game. :giggle: Also he has been in s**t form for the last year or so and this will only make him worse. Overall good news for ourselves, the poms and the chokers.

True, nobody would have forced him to captain the side. and he could very well have been selfish to focus on his batting.

Going by the attitude and grit he showed in batting in QF against India - this might be ponting's year.

I thought he will captain until next Ashes, he so wants that Ashes back...I thought he might convince selectors to give him a go until next Ashes atleast in Tests.
