Expected since I heard his first interview after returning to Australia. Before and during the WC, he spoke about how being captain was hugely important to him but later spoke how how you can be a leader without being the captain. Little surprised that he isn't giving up ODIs (if reports are to be believed).

Well clarke is a poor batsmen and not the best leader either in tests has a record of played 1 lost 1 ! Aus needs ponting runs his innings against India with a broken finger shows what a class act he is

Okay so it is confirmed now. Punter resigns from captaincy! His batting might regain the old touch now that he is not saddled with the task of captaining a weak Australian team.

Well whatever anyone thinks about him look at his record - been in 3 Australian world cup winning teams captain of 2 03 and 07 First Aus captain to win in india for how many year ?? Well I know he only played one test but still he picked up the trophy. A class batsmen on his day. Australia need his runs their batting resources are non existent. They cant afford to lose him like previous captains have quit the game altogether when losing the captaincy. Ponting needs to stay to give them any hope in the future!

Sachin has turned it around in the past 3-4 years' date=' no reason why :punter: can't do same now. :two_thumbs_up:[/quote'] ponting is older now...a comeback at this age=miracle

Since Ponting has been captain, his average has been 51. Without captaincy it was 55. Sachin as captain averaged 51. Without it he averages 57. Perhaps he can revive himself, he certainly has the talent to do it. Also, I don't think it was selfish of him to keep going on as captain.. He could of left it at that and retired with all the success but he was brave enough to take on the challenge of captaining a weaker side, he burdened the responsibilty on his shoulders and for that he has my respect.

I for one think Ponting was one of the best captains ever not just for Australia, but in the entire cricketing realm. I can't stand the guy for his numerous antics but as far as captaincy goes, you have to acknowledge what he's done for Australia. Clarke as Oz captain now? Pretty poor decision, I must say... won't be surprised if Australia does further downhill from now on under his leadership (or lack of). As a positive, I guess Punter's batting will be on the upswing now.
