Sachin=GOD Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 MUMBAI: Congratulating the Indian cricket team for winning the World Cup, Maharashtra assembly on Tuesday recommended to the Centre that batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar be conferred 'Bharat Ratna', the country's highest civilian award. The motion congratulating the team and recommending Bharat Ratna for Tendulkar was moved by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and supported by all parties. "We recommend that Tendulkar be conferred with the Bharat Ratna for his contribution to sports," Chavan said before the house adopted the resolution unanimously. Noting that after 28 years, the dreams of 121 crore Indians has come true. Chavan announced that the state government will honour players from Maharashtra Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan with a cash prize of Rs one crore and a citation. Similarly, two members of the team's support staff Mayank Parekh (logistics manager) and Ramesh Mane (masseur) will be honoured with Rs 50 lakh each. He also congratulated the police and traffic department for ensuring an incident free World Cup final in Mumbai last Saturday. Leader of Opposition Eknath Khadse said Sachin was "God" of Cricket. "This achievement has not come easy for him and it has required 21 years of hard work and unblemished career. Sachin is a complete team man despite frequent criticism that he plays for his individual records," he said. Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai demanded that Sachin be granted additional FSI for construction of gymnasium in his under construction bungalow at Bandra. "He is a sportsman and wants a gym constructed in his own home. He has not asked FSI for a disco or club. His request should be granted and if necessary rules should be amended," he added. Hell Raiser Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 No one deserves this more than Sachin Tendulkar. Its about time that he gets this. Even if they don't give him that, Sachin is still every Indian's Ratna.

With all due respect to Dhoni - 6-7 years of cricket does'nt even compare to what this guy has done in 21 years, and not just on the field, its the achievements off the field - the way he has changed the game of cricket and motivated a whole generation to take up this game and has been responsible for cricket's increased popularity more than any other cricketer in the world, these are the things for which he should get Bharat Ratna. Dhoni, despite all his achievements in such a short period, has a long way to go yet. If he can continue this kind of form and be such a good Captain for the next 10 years, then yes, but right now, No.

Baad Indian Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Dhoni is a captain and would never be deserving for such a Award even after 20 years , he is totally dependent on performance of other 10 members of the team for his achievements but Tendulkar has achieved everything on his own . If not for emergence of a 20 years old Little boy on the national scene , Cricket would have been just any other sport like Hockey both in terms of popularity and money factor .

However, Sachin is in a different league. 30000+ runs in the International cricket. I think he is arguably the best batsman the world has seen and he deserves to be awarded as "Bharat Ratna".

So, was Kapil Dev's achievement any less than Dhoni as WC Captain that he did'nt get the Bharat Ratna - after all he was a far greater player than Dhoni, he did'nt get it? Its not just about being the Captain of a WC winning team. Its more about the impact and contribution to the field - Goddy's contribution to cricket has been absolutely unparalleled in the history of Indian sports. Cricket's popularity and the money in the game right now can be attributed to a large extent to this one man and along with that there are his achievements on the cricket field itself. As a captain Dhoni has been great but as an individual player Dhoni has'nt achieved even as much as Dravid or Ganguly etc.

You would prefer seeing our previous and other sporting legends get the BR for their contribution to Indian sport, but at the same time, you cite Dhoni being 'irreplaceable' as the reason for him deserving India's highest honour? There are so many Indian sportsmen who can be deemed irreplaceable. I can see Dhoni getting the Bharat Ratna in years to come, and I'm not denying that, but to say Sachin Tendulkar can be replaced really is a gaffe. And Dhoni still has plenty of years left in cricket. I don't know why you've got your knickers in a twist over that. In the same vein and as per your reasoning, Kapil Dev should have got a Bharat Ratna too. What about him? (I think he should, btw).
