abhinav
Good thing to come out of this argument is lot less of Ind-SL matches !!! Yes indeed! I am so sick of watching us play in those sleepy Lankan grounds on pithces that are tailor-made for their slow bowlers. The Lankans arent getting a pie of the big dough now! Switchblade
Sri Lanka rejects BCCI request on IPL players http://www.indianexpress.com/ipl2011/news/sri-lanka-rejects-bcci-request-on-ipl-players/778669 n what could strain the relations between the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket, the Lankan government and SLC have decided to stick to their decision of calling back national cricketer, playing in the IPL, by May 5. Early this month they had ordered the players to return to the country to prepare for the upcoming England tour. Though no meeting took place between the BCCI and SLC but Indian officials did speak to their Lankan counterparts on the matter and requested them to let their players play in the Twenty20 event at-least till May 15. But Sports Minister Mahindanada Aluthgamage and the Cricket Board (SLC) have decided to ignore the Indian request. A Sri Lankan Cricket source said here today that Aluthgamage, Sri Lanka Cricket and the national selection committee had lengthy deliberations yesterday on the matter. Accordingly some 11 Sri Lankans including the star players Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena and the newly appointed Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan would have to abide by the Sri Lankan decision. Aluthgamage has said that interests of Sri Lankan cricket was his priority and Sri Lankans would be sending a polite explanation on the decision to the Indians. Sri Lanka summoned all IPL players to return in order to prepare for the tour of England which starts on May 10. Former captain Sangakkara, now leading Deccan Chargers, said the players will have to abide by the Sri Lanka Cricket decision but expressed hope that two boards would sort out the issue. Zap_Brannigan
The question remains: Why now? Why did they not decide on this or communicate on this before? Because the egoist sports minister expected India to treat him and his family as states guest during the world cup final, which BCCI did not oblige. The only fallout for IPL in this is that some good players will not be part of IPL 4. Considering the players that are either sitting out or not yet selected, this is not going to matter much. A couple of franchises that are dependent primarily on SL players might feel the pinch. The fallout for SL, if BCCI decides to exert its power, is huge and fatal. First, legally BCCI can sue the SLCB and its players. Then it can stop helping out SL i.e. stop outside FTP tours. Then it can also banning certain players for breaking contract from IPL and not select a SL team for Champions league. The financial fallout would be from the first class level to the national level and more importantly in the players pockets.

saneindian
The Lankan sports minister has forced the Lankan board into this stupid situation. It was not too long ago that the Lankan board was deep in debt and was struggling to pay salaries of its players. BCCI bailed them out with loans and lots of useless tri series. What a way to pay this back. The fall out could be massive for the Lankan board and the players. The SLCB is already in huge debts post the WC and without BCCI's help, it's impossible for them to imporve their situation. Knowing how the BCCI functions, it will not be a surprise to see BCCI strangle the lankan board now.
meloveindia
Malinga is not selected for Test Matches (SL tour to England), so will he play the entire IPL for MI? Test matches runs till June 20, and 1st One Day is on June

girishk14
MI is very lucky. KTK, RCB are going to be badly affected - Pradeep looked like a good malinga spoof. Dilshan, Perera and MJ are very valuable players. CSK's spin attack is overdependant on Ashwin, and Southee and Morkel are cannon fodder. Jakati loves sixes (being hit). Randiv is a big loss. rajmarie
Thank U Lanka minister....IMO...Test comes 1st...& I never liked when WI players used to depart 1 day before the test start...playing in IPL....for money offcourse. No SL players will have the chance to go & get used to Eng condition well in advance & play 2 practice game also. This way...when England rub them in & defeat them easily...SL cant find the IPL as an excuse. Plus IMO...some teams might get better when SLan players will leave. The only exception can be KTK...whos captain Jaya is in good form.
hari504504
Well after the WC finals Dhoni did say that he had deciphered Murali and knew how to play him having been together (I guess he meant CSK). I am guessing Ranatunga's frustration is kind of based on comments like that. Now question for Ranatunga is why he doesn't think it helps the foreign players as well since they get to learn some of the inside info about the Indian players they get to play with. Should work the other way around as well - Murali should've known all of Dhoni's cards as a captain as well as a batsman. Unlike other teams - our entire playing XI..no entire 15 man squad is in IPL..that means all these foreigners should know everything about our batsmen (..nothing to know about our bowlers though ...) . And we won the cup despite the IPL

Blueraphael
First up, SLCB should not have give the NOC to its players for upto 22nd. That was just stupid of them. After having given them the NOC, it was completely unprofessional of them to recall their players a good 17 days before the NOCs expired.

sharma
now they are calling for malinga back even though he made it clear he does not want to play test cricket. for some reason this just feels like they want to take panga with BCCI if i recall correctly there was some panga with slc when modi was around too, but he got it fixed overnight - when ranatunga was sacked? or was it someone else? Ultimate_Game
Let SLCB call their players back... I can see SL players not being picked in future IPLs due to their board. The reason why the SL players got fat contracts in the IPL was coz they were supposed to be available for the whole IPL. Since the SL board went back on their words expect the SL players' value dropping in subsequent tournaments. And BCCI is unlikely to entertain SL in the near future nor send its team to SL. Let's see how long SLCB's head remains above water before it comes back with a begging bowl in hand. When such a situation occurs, which will inevitably happen, BCCI should calmly respond that let the sports minister bail out SL cricket.
prasadiyer
Ideally there should be no foreigners in the IPL. Yes, the quality will go down. But don't you feel awkward when in game after game it is the foreigners who deliver the goods, after the local "talent" (think guys like Bisla and Manoj-dot-ball-Tiwari) have made a thorough hash of things? The IPL should sink or swim with the Indian players. It is not just a question of entertainment. If that's the goal, then increase the foreign quota even more. Make it like Manchester United or Chelsea, where you would be hard-pressed to find more than a couple of English players.
