Love their philosophical lyrics (Varun take notice) albeit psychedelic, sonic experimentation, innovative art and lastly but not the least their live shows with all it's rainbow lasers. Had the good fortune of watching them live twice. Once ,when Roger Waters toured my hometown and the hippest city in the world, Bangalore and once in UK when David Gilmour was running the show. The Floyd's combination of music and visuals set them apart from other legends like Zepplain , Deep Purple etc. And not to mention standard set in sound quality with innovative use of sound effects and panning quadraphonic speaker systems. Remember the song "Wish you were here". BTW, "comfortably numb" which happens to be my favorite song has been voted as the best solo ever in August 2006, in a poll by viewers of TV music channel Planet Rock. And I happen to agree that this is David Gilmour's best work including the lyrics , one of the few songs from "Wall" album which he wrote and composed. I happen to agree with Rahul's assessment. It is pretty apparent that David Gilmour was the better guitarist and his lead vocals was the driving force behind pink floyd's success. In fact , fender magazine , rates David Gilmour , the best guitarist ever and can't complain after watching the solos from "Comfortably Numb". Jeez, after listening to this song , I got to agree. Gilmour has a very precise solo style, rooted in blues and notable for expressive note bends and sustain. His solos are noted for being well-composed, economical, lyrical and melodious. Roger Waters was the better song writer , no question about it. He was decent guitarist , but got his ass kicked by Gilmour during their brief reunion for Live 8 . Rahul Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 @K_R rog was (and still is, IMHO) the greatest bass guitarist. unfortunately, he cant hold a candle to gilly, interms of LEAD or SLIDE... but then, KR, roger never said that's his suit. the unbelievable bass riffs are ALL ROGER--"setting controls for the heart of the sun"??? unbelievably good progression. have u ever chkd out "pros and Cons of hitchhiking" by waters (actually, if u find it credited to PF, thats a collectors edition-- i think thats where snowy white made friends with waters, who couldnt stand gilly by that time. snowy is aight but gilly is EZPECIALE.)

(roger added that lil "look mommy, there's a plane up in the sky!") Richard wright does some of the harmonies on that el magnifico track.

Point well taken although Gilly is proficient in bass guitar also not to mention other instruments like saxophone and drums. To me , he is one of best musician from a artistic viewpoint. But should be good , because I used to love those songs from scorpions - Holiday , Always somewhere , When the smoke is going down , yep was "in trance" when listening to that album. I have checked out tony mcalpine pretty good stuff.

"comfortably Numb" is gilly. so is most of Animals. and waters' "pros and Cons" and "radio chaos" and that sorry "amused to death" is really terrible writing, vroom. even gilly's bakwaas About Face has better writing.

In fact , he himself admitted to the fact that Roger was the more proficient song writer. Most of the songs from "Dark side of the Moon " , "Wall" , "Final Cut" have been written by Roger Waters. Even for the later Pink Floyd releases like "Division Bell" , "Momentary Lapse of Reason" he had hired then-girlfriend now-wife Polly Samson for song writing.

The entire transition of Pink Floyd from a pyschadelic group to one based so heavily on lyrics was brought about on the keels of Waters with inputs from Gilmour. Infact, 80% of the songs of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Wall were written by Waters.

PF was ALWAYS (and still remains) a psych-rock band. there was really no TRANSITION.
