ViruRulez Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Yes it sounds a bit n00by but there seems to be a lot of fanboys of Mac here and so thought of asking it. I have bought another new laptop in order to test and learn some new OSes especially to test Windows 8 beta. Also for learning Linux commands as I need them a lot in my servers and it does not make sense paying server admins all the time when I need some server work. I am trying out Ubuntu Natty 11.04 now and though I have tried it out in the past on an archaic unused laptop where it hung a lot but in my new 4GB RAM i3 test laptop it is working a lot better. Ubuntu is looking good at the moment for a free OS though it is not as smooth as Windows 7 (more comparable to Windows XP instead IMO) and I am starting to like it. I tried CentOS as it is used on most webhosting servers but could not install it after several tries on my laptop even after trying both the LiveCD as well as full DVD. So, I have decided to give CentOS a miss as of now and instead use the Ubuntu terminal for learning and also the difference with CentOS. Debian is similar to Ubuntu so I dont think there is any benefit in installing it. Other Linux OSes I am not much interested. But I have been hearing a lot about Mac from all the Apple fanboys :giggle: and so I am tempted to try it out as an OS. I searched on google and it seems a whole lot of websites are selling Mac OS though not sure if it is just an upgrade or what. Is it allowed to install Apple on any other computer and to purchase license for Apple OS. I do not want to install an illegal version but is there any legal way to use Mac OS on any non-Apple computer and if so how.

The license we can purchase it seems so it should be legal isn't it? Read about Hackintosh before posting here in ICF but was not sure about the legal viewpoint of using it on a normal PC. But while searching in Amazon I saw it mentioned in the listing that only definite conditions need to be met for them to ship the package. Did you purchase the license online or where did you purchase it from. The price looks quite attractive for testing purpose if it is only $29. I am also starting to like Linux/Ubuntu in the last couple of days and it is also very interesting but it does not feel as smooth for desktop purpose compared to Windows especially Windows 7 version.
akshayxyz Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 As I suggested in the other thread by Rajiv - before going all out installation and if you have sufficient memory - try 'hackintosh' on virtual machine ( virtual box or vmware). As per OSX-SLA, it is not allowed to install on non-apple branded hardware. Even to get it to work on virtual-box or vmware, some hacking is required (hence - hackintosh).
