ganeshran Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 JJ has brought back the Chennai monorail proposal shelved in 2006 after her reign. This puts the future of Chennai metro in jeopardy. Already the work has begun and if the government concentrates on Monorail, newer metro routes might not be sanctioned at all. The whole effectiveness of Metro increases manifold when it has many routes rather than a token presence of one or two. Disadvantages of a monorail network: 1) Untested technology - there are only about 20 systems in asia with 10 of them being in Japan. 2) Higher cost to capacity ratio: The capacity of Monorail is only 140 per coach and number of coaches is 4-5. Metro can take 9 coaches. Hence a larger capacity for a city like Chennai 3) Length of Monorail: The longest operational monorail line in the world is 23 kms. Chennai's proposal of a 300 km long corridor Advantages of a monorail network 1) Its gets completed faster than a metro 2) It has lower cost of construction than a metro network. The main disadvantage here is two different transit systems in the city. A focussed effort on one system would be much more advantageous to the people in the city. Information source: Hindu report

Just as an example the subway can be used for the primary routes and destinations with fewer stops and monorails starting from the the same subway stops can be used to fill in the tertiary and more frequent stops.
General_Public Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 But I think Chennai has already got a local train network in some parts. This seems like a pure politically motivated decision to me.
Sachin=GOD Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Lucknow will also have both Metro and Monorail :aha: :aha: Although work hasn't started in either projects till now.

Outy, if proper planning is done, you are right that it can be used as an advantage. But this one seems like a politically motivated decision since the DMK government scrapped the previous monorail tender and opted for Metro (the feasibility study for which was done way back in 2003 during the ADMK government itself). I am worried that no more new routes for the Metro will be sanctioned and its usefulness will be limited because of less coverage. Meanwhile monoral construction itself will take much longer time and this will ultimately make the Chennai people suffer

That's whats happenning in Mumbai.
