Delhi looking to write a new tale this season More... Delhi looking to write a new tale Shalabh Manocha, Hindustan Times New Delhi, November 03, 2011 b588041e-ee34-4d23-9bc2-2e24ab5f6a14MediumRes.JPG Sacking of the chief coach 48 hours before a game is never good news but for the Delhi Ranji team, who will be playing their first game of the season against Haryana on Thursday, the departure of Manoj Prabhakar didn't seem to have had much of an effect. The Prabhakar episode is the latest in Delhi cricket, which is never short of controversies and distractions. The former champions have four players in the India ranks and Shikhar Dhawan in the Ranji squad played ODIs this season but such aspirations are not always reflected in the management. The permanent chaos in administration can also be judged from the fact that the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) was late in announcing the probables and coaches of teams in different age categories as well. The Delhi players, who practiced in the first half of Thursday, warmed up playing a game of handball and were in a jovial mood. At the nets, bowlers Pradeep Sangwan and Parvinder Awana were asked to bat first, to warm up before taking up the bowling duties. Delhi assistant coach Sanjeev Sharma, who has taken over from Prabhakar after the DDCA bosses sacked the former all-rounder for his media outburst against some of the players, was satisfied the team's preparations. Although Delhi won't be a full strength side because many of their players will be doing national duty in the Test series against West Indies, captain Mithun Manhas was also left explaining the controversial axing of Prabhakar. "It's our responsibility now to take the side forward. It's not that when he was around our responsibility was any less but we need to come together as professional players." Delhi have a decent blend of youth and experience in the batting but their bowling doesn't seem to be their strong point with little support for senior medium pacers Sangwan and Awana on a green pitch which is expected to afford movement initially. The skipper however was excited about young left-arm spinner Pawan Negi, who is expected to make his Ranji debut. Delhi however has to decide whether they will play left arm spinner Vikas Mishra or go with an extra batsman as the track is expected to help the pacers in the first session. 03-11-11-metro18.jpg Leg spinner and Haryana skipper Amit Mishra is one of the players who will have a point to prove, having been omitted from the India set-up like Harbhajan Singh. "Though some of the big names are missing from Delhi, they are still a very strong side playing at home. So the pressure is more on them," Mishra said. Haryana will be without the services of senior batsman Hemang Badani, who had played as a professional, while all-rounder Joginder Sharma is nursing a stiff neck. Mishra hopes the younger players will step it up. "We have a young side. The good part is that most of the teams don't know their strengths. That should go in our favour."

TN vs Baroda: sparks will fly if the rain stays away More... TN vs Baroda: sparks will fly if the rain stays away Weather could hold the key in the crunch Group B game of the Ranji Trophy Super League between last year's runner-up Baroda and host Tamil Nadu, beginning at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. It has been raining in and around the city and scattered thunder storms have been forecast in the region till Sunday. The Tamil Nadu team will miss the services of S. Badrinath the experienced batsman nursing a rotator cuff injury. Bowling has been a problem area for Tamil Nadu and the attack needs to operate in partnerships and create pressure from both ends. Somebody like paceman V. Yomahesh needs to step up and lend Balaji support. Young left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas is likely to have Sunny Gupta's off-spin for support. Anirudha who averaged 31.37 with the willow last Ranji season, and had the batting momentum following his blazing form in the Challenger one-day tournament is unlucky to miss out. The pressure will be on the likes of K.B. Arun Karthik and R. Prasanna to prove their worth in the side. Baroda will be without pace spearhead Munaf Patel, who is nursing an ankle injury. All-rounder Irfan Pathan, recovering from fitness concerns, and the big-hitting Yusuf Pathan provide depth and versatility to the side. In steady left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt, Baroda has the highest wicket-taker of the last Ranji season; Bhatt grabbed 47 wickets at 21.57. The talented Ambati Rayudu will be striving to force his way into national contentionIf the rain stays away, sparks could fly at Chepauk in the season opener. The teams (from): Tamil Nadu: L. Balaji (captain), Abhinav Mukund, M. Vijay, K.B. Arun Karthik, D. Karthik, K. Shree Vasudeva Dass, R. Prasanna, V.Yo Mahesh, Sunil Sam, R. Aushik Srinivas, Sunny Gupta, M. Kaushik Gandhi, B. Aparajith, J. Kaushik, Vijay Shankar. Baroda: Pinal Shah (captain), Anupam Gupta, Aditya Waghmode, Kedar Devdhar, Ambatti Rayudu, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Murtaja Vohora, Sunit Singh, Bhargav Bhatt, Sankalp Vohra, Shatrunjay Gaekwad, Rakesh Solanki, Swapnil Singh, Firdaush Bhaja.

Rajasthan, Karnataka have different targets More... Rajasthan, Karnataka have different targets It is interesting to know the different targets of Rajasthan and Karnataka as they gear up for their opening Ranji Trophy Super League Group â' match at the Field Club ground here from Thursday. Rajasthan knows its strengths and weaknesses well. So, the tag of the defending champion does not bring any additional pressure on it. The meteoric rise of the team from Plate Division to Super League stage to beating strong sides like Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Baroda on the way to win the title was the result of a collective effort. Ūt was a dream come true. The challenge now is to play consistently well for a few years, said home team captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar on Wednesday. Rajasthan suffered in its pre-season game against Rest of India and Kanitkar said the absence of a couple of key bowlers, including strike bowler Pankaj Singh, was a major reason. Ūnitially, we lost our grip over the match and the Rest batsmen batted well. But now we hope to start well tomorrow. The return of a fit Pankaj and the form of another pacer, Aniket Choudhary, who made a mark in his first class debut in the Irani Trophy, would definitely boost the confidence of the host. Karnataka has a well-balanced team and its main objective is to ÅØin the cup. The target looks all the more achievable despite the side's failure in the final and semifinals in 2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively. Ÿe have got a better side and we are ready to deliver the results, said Karnataka skipper R. Vinay Kumar. He considered the track to be good for batting and expected some initial help for the pacemen. Spinners might play a part later as the pitch dries out. The teams (from): Rajasthan: Hrishikesh Kanitkar (capt.), Aakash Chopra, R.R. Parida, Ashok Menaria, Vineet Saxena, Robin Bisht, Pankaj Singh, Deepak Chahar, Shamsher Singh, Sumit Mathur, Vaibhav Deshpande, Dishant Yagnik, Rohit Jhalani (wk), Aniket Choudhary and Madhur Khatri. Karnataka: R. Vinay Kumar (capt.), Robin Uthappa, K.B. Pawan, Ganesh Satish, Bharath Chipli, Manish Pandey, Amit Verma, C.M. Gautham (wk), Stuart Binny, Abhimanyu Mithun, S. Arvind, K.P. Apanna, Sunil Raju, K. Gowtham, S.K. Moinuddin, S.L. Akshay.

Bengal vs Gujarat : ' Pitched ' battle on the cards More... 'Pitched' battle on the cards A STAFF REPORTER Calcutta: The oversized gates adorned with advertisements, the police barricades The Eden is still ÃÊnternational? bearing signs of the recently held India-England ODI and T20. ThatÃÔ how it looks from the outside. On entering the venue, on Wednesday, one found a crowded ground with two teams jostling for practice space. Welcome to Ranji Trophy On the eve of BengalÃÔ Ranji season opener, against Gujarat, it looks more like a mismatch and chances of a keenly-contested match will depend much on the hosts failure than the visitors prowess. Also, matters could get complicated and equations could be rendered foolish if the pitch, a villain of sorts as per the negative publicity it has attracted over the last week, unleashes a ÃÈoogly to the expectations. A player-by-player analysis of both the teams will portray a lopsided picture. On one hand is Bengal, punctuated with a heavy presence of experience, and on the other is Gujarat, where captain Parthiv Patel is easily the best recognisable name. If knowing your opponent is a strategy, Bengal will draw a blank on that front. Said a senior member of the Bengal squad: Ÿe hardly know three-four faces in the Gujarat team The rest I donÃÕ know. A major allegation against the Bengal team last season was their inability to stretch their durability in the four-day game. Successful in the shortest format (they are the reigning national T20 champions), Bengal appeared to lose their focus often in the longer format, in the gone-by season. That then will be one of the challenges when they take the field Thursday. With a shrewd coach in W.V. Raman, that handicap shouldnÃÕ be still a worry for Manoj TiwaryÃÔ team. RamanÃÔ no-nonsense approach should have taken care of that. In fact, with the kind of experience that Bengal boasts, temperament should easily bat for the hosts. Though nothing has been made official, the team is more or less decided. Arindam Das and Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee will open the innings and will be followed by Avishek Jhunjhunwala, Tiwary, Sourav Ganguly, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Wriddhiman Saha. Among the bowlers, Ranadeb Bose and Mohammed Sami Ahmed are well-placed to make the XI. For the remaining two spots, itÃÔ a fight between Ashok Dinda, Sourashish Lahiri and Iresh Saxena. The dilemma, if there is any, about the playing XI is courtesy the much-talked about wicket. Criticised for its below par performance by none other than Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the pitch will be an important factor. Curator Prabir Mukherjee claimed on match-eve that he has made a ÅÇirm, even bounce wicket? as per the directive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. According to a CAB insider, the BCCI directive is a sort of warning for the association to ÅÑitch it right. With India slated to meet West Indies in a Test at the Eden later this month, the Ranji tie will definitely be a test for the CAB and its curator. And if you think that the presence of Sourav in the Bengal team is being underplayed, you are spot-on. The former India captain has been keeping an unusually low profile in the build up to the season. HeÃÔ there, practising with the boys, sharing his thoughts with the coach But a strange lull surrounds the charismatic personality... If that happens to be a prelude to a storm of form with the bat, we will be more than happy! Teams Bengal (likely): Arindam Das, Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee, Avishek Jhunjhunwala, Manoj Tiwary (captain), Sourav Ganguly, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Wriddhiman Saha, Ranadeb Bose, Mohammed Sami Ahmed, Saurashish Lahiri, Iresh Saxena/ Ashok Dinda. Gujarat (from): Parthiv Patel (captain), Niraj Patel, Bhavik Thaker, Rujul Bhatt, Sunny Patel, Rikin Chauhan, Salil Yadav, Pratharesh Parmar, Rajdeep Darbar, Amit Singh, Priyank Panchal, Jayesh Makla, Faisal Dudhat, Ishwar Chaudhry, Mehul Patel.

Is Sudeep Tyagi playing?
YES TYAGI IS PLAYING , SEEMS A BIT OUT OF SORTS, hit the stumps with Mandeep singh batting and bails stayed on the stumps, he looks a bit rusty, action has changed a bit, not using his left arm as high as he used to also his head and body is not in line at delivery point, he needs to bowl more, did get a bit of bounce though , bowled a few good balls.

Punjab coach Vikram Rathour is at a loss to explain why Harbhajan is not the Indian Test side at the moment but at the same time heÃÔ not complaining. Ū really donÃÕ know from where these reports are coming that Harbhajan needs to rediscover his hunger for cricket. I spoke to him and even he does not know why he is not in the Test team.

Tyagi has looked ordinary in the UP vs Punajb game. Neo speed gusn weren't working for most of the day so far. For some delivefies for which they showed the speeds, he is sturggling to hit 130 kmph. RPS has bowled mostly around 128-132 kmph. The Mohali track looks dead but then no bowler is trying to put any effort either. Sarul Kanwar came out to bat wearing his IPL helmet,Raina is wearing cap which definitely is not the UP cap. Mandeep has looked elegant and has played some classic shots mostly drives and cuts.
