Kenya squad announced for Ireland clashes

Early pace-setter and three-time former champion Ireland travels to Mombasa this week to take on Kenya in what will kick-off the third round of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2011-2013. The four-day first-class fixture will be played from 12-15 February at the Mombasa Sports Club. Ireland leads the table with 40 points after securing maximum points from its matches against Namibia and Canada, which it won by five wickets and by an innings, respectively. Kenya, in contrast, is sitting in sixth position with 16 points from two matches. While it made a disastrous start to the event by losing to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 266 runs in its backyard in Nairobi after taking a six-run first innings lead, its second game against the Netherlands at the Salland Cricket Club No 1 ground in Deventer was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Mammoth task awaits Obuya against Ireland

Kenya’s cricket skipper Collins Obuya has a hard task before him when his charges take on the much improved Ireland in the International Cricket Council’s Intercontinental Cup four-day match that starts at the Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday. The first class match will be followed by two crucial one day international games on February 18 and 20. This time round, the performance in the one dayers will determine which of the eight teams taking part in the Intercontinental Cup shall automatically take two of the four slots reserved for non Test playing countries in the 2015 World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The remaining six teams will be joined by four others from the World Cricket League series to vie for the remaining two slots. In Mombasa, the one dayers will be followed by two Twenty20 games at the same venue on February 22 and 23. The Cricket Kenya chief executive officer, Tom Sears, on Wednesday said that the Irish squad will arrive in Nairobi on Thursday and later leave to the coastal town the same day. Kenya leave for Mombasa on Friday. Even though the selectors have not released Kenya’s squad, no surprises are expected as the number of players to pick the side from is small. Therefore, Rakep Patel who is currently enjoying good form, will spearhead batting line-up with the support of David Obuya, Duncan Allan, Alex Obanda, Morris Ouma, Collins, Ragheb Aga and Dominic Wesonga. Nehemiah Odhiambo will lead batting attack together with Elijah Otieno, James Ngoche and Shem Ngoche. After the Intercontinental Cup, the two teams will travel to Dubai for the Global World Twenty20 qualifiers that takes off from March 3 where 16 teams will fight it out for the two slots reserved for non-Test playing countries in the World Cup slated for September in Sri Lanka.
