Ultimate_Game Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 The problem India has in the odis (don't even want to go to T20s where the gap is even larger) the no. 7 spot in the batting order. Ideally a team should have a no. 7 batsman who can go over the top and get quick runs. But unfortunately for us the no. 7 spot is taken by Jadeja who can't clear boundaries outside India or against pacers. He's good when the RR is hovering around 5 or so like in the previous game against SL but can't do much when the RR starts climbing and you need to find boundaries or clear them. The problem for India is exacerbated since our tail also can't get quick runs. Ashwin is a pretty decent batsman who has a cool head but like Jadeja he can't clear boundaries, and for the rest of the tail they can't even stay at the crease forget scoring quick runs. Jadeja is not a good enough batsman that we can push up the order and get someone like Raina at 7. This is one area where we are missing Yuvi who could bat at 4 or 5 and have Raina at 7 who would be an ideal batsman to come in. The options we have for no. 7 are Pathan bros (Yusuf & Irfan) and Uthappa who can use the long handle to good effect. Maybe we can play Irfan in place of one of our pacers (highly unlikely the way Vinay Kumar has bowled so far) so that he can slot in when quick runs are needed. But no matter whom you play one thing's clear - we need to find another option at 7 coz Jadeja can't get it done when RR is high and 4s and 6s are needed.
Sid Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Raina. If Jaddu has to play,he has to bat higher.
Old guy Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 for next match play pathan in place of zaheer he needs rest imo
Pagalpanti Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Jaddu or Yusuf. But I'd prefer Jaddu cuz he's much better bowler and has bailed India out of tough situations more than once. He's come good a lot of times when India were in trouble.
Show_stopper Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 It'll be interesting to see how Ashok Menaria goes this IPL. He is a very similar bowler to jaddu but has a lot more shots, importantly against pacers he doesn't look like a complete rabbit. IF this guy turns in good performances, will definitely replace Jaddu one day. I have no idea regarding his fielding though...probably nothing flashy. SO thats one area where he may never be beetter than Jaddu.

He's come good a lot of times when India were in trouble. As I said Jaddu is good when RR is manageable but he can't manage a high RR, and is not the ideal batsman to take advantage of power plays or slog overs. Raina. If Jaddu has to play,he has to bat higher. But Jaddu is not good enough to bat higher and take Raina's slot :((
Ultimate_Game Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 for next match play pathan in place of zaheer he needs rest imo True and the way Zak is bowling at the moment Pathan wouldn't be too much of a drop-off. Also we should rest Dhoni for the next game. Wish we had Uthappa in the squad who could keep wkts and come lower down the order and get quick runs.
VRV Singh Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Raina as a pure batsman is best equipped. He can tee off early. But 10 overs for part-timers is potential suicide in Aus. Don't know about other alternatives.
Old guy Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 True and the way Zak is bowling at the moment Pathan wouldn't be too much of a drop-off. what? he was still our best bowler today he isnt bowling that badly just looked out of breath so i thought why not save him since its a long series..

Don't know about other alternatives. Raina can't bowl 10 overs even in sub-continent forget him bowling 10 overs in Aus. He's a batsman and shouldn't be asked to bowl full quota of overs.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 what? he was still our best bowler today he isnt bowling that badly just looked out of breath so i thought why not save him since its a long series.. He was not his usual self and didn't look like picking wkts the way he usually does. Against the lankans we should give Pathan a chance to bowl with the new ball and see what happens. On these pitches if Pathan can swing the ball he would be pretty handy against lankans.
Sid Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 But Jaddu is not good enough to bat higher and take Raina's slot :(( Well,I think he is good enough to bat higher up,especially in ODIs.He can rotate strike, get occasional 4s as well. But dont think team management is thinking on those lines, unfortunately I guess they are happy with Jaddu at 7.

But Sehwag/Rohit/Kohli/Raina are not reliable enough to give 10 overs. A half-remedy would be swapping MSD and Raina batting positions - I think this should be happening regularly anyway.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Well' date='I think he is good enough to bat higher up,especially in ODIs.He can rotate strike, get occasional 4s as well. But dont think team management is thinking on those lines, unfortunately I guess they are happy with Jaddu at 7.[/quote'] Jaddu gets bogged down higher up. Remember the way he used to play in T20s when he was promoted up the order. He looked like fish out of water and couldn't get anything going.

On these pitches if Pathan can swing the ball he would be pretty handy against lankans. yes..got no problem with that if he gives away 10 extra runs he can easily make up with bat zack really sucks with bat now a days @ sid maybe its bcos he is normally calm while chasing..u dont always end with run rate of 7-8 at end if its around 6 he can easily manage plus most of guys before him can hit the ball.. maybe they should change the roles.. jaddu to stay till end who so ever on other side to go for runs

Yuvi is a huge loss for us as he could bat at 4 and he could bowl competently as well. For us Yuvi's illness has mean the drop-off from Yuvi to Jadeja in the batting order. Pathan needs to be given a chance in a few games to see what he's capable of.
Show_stopper Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 No Pathan please...he is perfectly content with carrying drinks. Leave him be. We have to play these pacers till the end of the series. Rest them if we secure a place in the finals before the last league match.

He looked like fish out of water and couldn't get anything going. That was T20 ,dont confuse the formats.Demands of ODI middle order are different from T20 as you yourself know.He definately deserves a try higher up.

We have to play these pacers till the end of the series. Rest them if we secure a place in the finals before the last league match. Gotta remember we play Asia Cup and Pakis just after the series and we can't afford injuries to Zak. There's no way Zak lasts the series without injury if he doesn't get a few games off. Same with Dhoni. He needs to be rested as well for a couple of games. Dhoni's played non-stop the whole tour and should be given a break.
saneindian Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 In a batting lineup with Sehwag, Gauti, Kohli, Rohit, Raina and MSD in top 6, the situations where we need the number 7 to win us matches by chasing down 8-9 runs an over would be rare. Jadeja since his comeback has bowled brilliantly barring a match or two and has chipped in with useful contributions at number 7. Let him continue there for the time being, if possible let him bat higher in certain situations. he is still evolving as a player and needs to be given time. As of now he has the makings of a good enough all rounder for the ODI side.
