pensionplan Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Who is the better batsman? SMG played some of the best bowlers ever during the 70's and 80's opening and scoring in all conditions. He to me was a total package as a batsman that would later turn out to be the inspiration to the aspiring young players for the future generations for the kind of discipline and the professional approach he brought to batting even back in the day. A legend in every sense of it that singlehandedly was instrumental in how we were viewed upon as a cricketing nation that the likes of Kapil and others would further advance in the 80's to where we are now. Ofcourse SRT and his exploits needs no introduction. 22 years and 15k Test runs. Enough said. Stats aside who would be your pick as the better batsman among the two of them. Discuss and make your points as to why you prefer one over the other.
Deleted_User_1 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 This comparison is a joke. SRT definitely.....and SMG was my childhood idol, I have grown up admiring him. SMG is one of the greatest opener, but SRT is a more complete batsman and has records to prove. I am certain SRT would have been equally successful had he played in the 70s and 80s.

pensionplan Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 This comparison is a joke.I am not sure if every one will be on board with that statement and brush it aside as easily.
Lurker Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Gavaskar was quality, Sachin is quantity. That should sum it up succintly. Sunny for me.

At least do a search to see if this thread exists or not. All sort of Sachin comparisons have been done and dusted on this forum.
Deleted_User_1 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Gavaskar was quality, Sachin is quantity. That should sum it up succintly. Sunny for me. I have come to opinion that you like to fantasize about the past a bit too much!!! There are plenty knocks on Gavaskar's quality you speak of: 1. The first series in WI where he was so successful had no good WI bowlers to speak of, only the likes of Holder, Sobers, etc 2. He was a abject failure against Lillee and Pascoe and other ROW series in 70-71 is Aus. Only scored against the second rate bowlers in 1977-78 and 85-86 (against a young McDermott and Reid and some trundlers) 3. Besides the 1979 series in England, his record in England is pretty average. 4. He scored tons against the second rate attack of WI in the home series in India thus boosting his avg against WI. That coupled with the first series show his performance in better light that it really is. 5. He played well in WI only the series in 1975-76 but there was no Garner or Marshall yet. Gavaskar best years were late 70s but at that time most of the champion players were playing the Packer series and he scored a lot of runs against second strong attacks during those 2-3 years. We really do not know how he would have been if all the top bowlers were playing. Look, SMG is my idol and I consider him to be a ATG, but to say he was quality and SRT was quantity is total BS. The greatness of SRT is his consistency over the years, and I do not think there are lot of batsman that can claim that over such a long time. You need skill, temperament, lack of prolonged loss of form, etc to acheive that.
Deleted_User_1 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I am not sure if every one will be on board with that statement and brush it aside as easily. Well I can say this with a lot of conviction since I have followed SMGs career very closely. He inspired me to play cricket when I was a little kid.
Lurker Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I have come to opinion that you like to fantasize about the past a bit too much!!! Another bhakt had come to the conclusion that I "hated" Sachin because of Raj Thackeray. Keep sending such judgement my way, they are lot funnier than those that pop up on Readers Digest these days. :winky: With regards to Sunny's quality over Sachin, you do realize how SRT averages a gallant high 30s against top pace bowlers of his era, no?? You should check out..if you dont know that already.
Lurker Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Well I can say this with a lot of conviction since I have followed SMGs career very closely. He inspired me to play cricket when I was a little kid. Fair enough. To each his own. You support Sachin, I support Sunny. Cant we co-exist? Whats with this judgemental hat your lot seems to wear Danda-ji?

Also how many players do you know that averages really high against top class bowlers?
Lurker Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Can you refute the points I made? I am no bhakt. Look at my avatar. I am just not a hater like you and few others!!! Abhi raat mein koi kaam nahin hai :haha::haha: dude seriously how many times do I have to re-state my same positions arghhhhh. Lets start with an oft stated criticism. Sachin never dominated any quality attack. Scoring 500 in a series. Sachin has none, Sunny has 4-5(cant be bothered to check Statsguru right now). Even in last series Ponting, Clarke both scored 500. Ponting has done it atleast once against India earlier too. Fair criticism?

Whats with this judgemental hat your lot seems to wear Danda-ji? Sure you can prefer Sunny. I have no problem with that. I like both. However, one is quality and the other is quality is the statement I was taking issue with.

He inspired me to play cricket when I was a little kid.I have no doubt in my mind about that coming from a fan who followed him so closely. For whatever it is worth I am a bigger Vishy fan than a SMG fan and to date believe that he is the best worst pitch player India ever had but for his liking for the beer he should have accumulated more runs for a player of that genius and command.

However' date=' one is quality and the other is quality is the statement I was taking issue with.[/quote'] Just as I take umbrage to loosely use words like haters, living in the past etc. You cant be judgemental, and then complain when others are as well Danda-ji...

And I am not going to put up excuses for that. I am sure if you check the stats of any ATG, you will see that almost every one (maybe except Bradman) will have several categories where they fall short. I am sure one can come up with several metrics where SRT was successful and other ATGs were not. BTW, I am not of the opinion that SRT is the greatest. He is not. He is a ATG and certainly one of the best batsman in cricket as are a few others.

And an area where traditionally great batsmen have been stellar. So it was a rather simple question. Do you agree with that being a fair criticism against Sachin?? BTW, I am not of the opinion that SRT is the greatest. He is not. He is a ATG and certainly one of the best batsman in cricket as are a few others. Fair enough, I didnt accuse of you claiming otherwise at all. I know you better from other posts :winky:
