singhprakash72 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Under dravids short captaincy stint we won series in england' date='pak and westindies.I dont think we won any overseas test series under gangulys captaincy(9 of 21 wins came against bangla/zim).[/quote'] No one argues these Series wins were crucial specially after a decade of no test win let alone series. But the point I am trying to drive is beyond 2005/6 we should have pushed this team to another gear...yes we might have lost a few but would have surely won series against WI,ENg and NZ 3-0,2-0 and 2-0 respectively instead of 1-0. Dhoni (before post WC debacle) inspite of great leadership knack failed to inspire this team for series win in SA ...these were indication of a good team playing super safe and not pushing it self to dominant position....Did we see any sporting declaration or putting up chase in 4th innings or even team selection with 5 bowlers ???
Ultimate_Game Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Bridgetown Test against WI where we had to chase 120 in mid 90s, and the Chennai against Test in 99 where SRT nearly won us the game hurts me the most. These 2 Tests should have been won by us.
yoda Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I see that the Bhakth brigade is in a Dravid bashing mode of late. Oh he was soooo slow that one test, oh he has always been soooo slow his whole career. Too bad they still cant find a game where he purposely slowed down to get to a personal milestone where the team lost a match. You know why? See my siggy. :winky:

See my siggy. :winky: He cherished playing out certain number of deliveries, # of minutes on the field. His milestones used to be, 50 balls, 100 balls, 60 minutes, 1 session...etc... - from reliable sources. Now go ahead and use your statsguru skills to figure out whether he slowed down or accelerated nearing his 'personal' milestones.

Dravid certainy can score fast when he wants, he has a 19 ball 50, yet he chose not to, why? Team above everything else surely? There are many other instances and not just with slow batting, when he did not put team above everything else. He was rather in the mode of looking nice to the media and the opposition than defending his team and players. Team above everything else? P.S. Dravid fans please dont mind, just talking about double standards of certain posters. The kind of unwanted criticism labelled at Sachin (being selfish, if you take X factor he is down, X innings, he is bad, etc) can be labelled at each and every batsman. But no one can care less
CSK Fan Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 A draw>loss anyday:cantstop: Even when there was a clear chance of victory and you deliberately play slow?

But no one can care less Then why do you mind when some posters talk rubbish about Sachin.. You can also keep silent , because you think Sachin is way better than any one else , no need to convince yourself same thing again and again... Now you talk rubbish about Dravid because some one esle talk about sachin then some other guys will talk against Sachin and give same reason as you are giving..end of day this going nowhere.. just My two cents

But no one can care less The crucuial difference is in the intent, i.e. SRT did it deliberately and intentionally scoring slow to reach his personal milestone whereas Dravid didn't slow down when he was scoring fast just so that he can notch a milestone. As for looking nice in front of media and to the opposition surely SRT never does that :giggle:

As for looking nice in front of media and to the opposition surely SRT never does that :giggle: \troll mode\ But at times Dravid showed that he can play fast as well. But he didn't try always. Why? Because he thought there is more risk to his wicket if he tries to score fast and to him his own wicket mattered more than teams requirement. \troll mode\ Overall I think Batsmen approach towards scoring rate is combination of own confidence level and teams requirement. If batsmen confidence level is low and team requirement is not perceived as very high, a batsman may take his time. Prolly that makes many batsmen go slow around century mark, even if faster approach may help team a bit better.

Prolly that makes many batsmen go slow around century mark, even if faster approach may help team a bit better. Very true and it's not just nearing the milestones that some batsmen slow down for. In Ganguly's case the guy derailed India's innings and cost ud the match and series against Pakistan in 2005-06 when he came in ahead of in-form Yuvraj when India looked like scoring 350+. Ganguly then crawled to 18 off 33 and India managed to end up with 318 and lost the match. That incident was worse than the SRT against B'desh one coz it cost us the match and series against Pakistan. The worst incident I am aware of is the Prabhakar-Mongia giving up the chase against WI in mid 90s.
